第1篇Corporate Scandals

In an era of corporate scandals, one of the biggest, has largely escaped attention. So it is good news that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is finally taking a look at how some of America's biggest companies have been cynically exploiting the accounting rules that apply to their pension funds. This might seem an esoteric* field. It is not immediately clear that much is at stake. In fact, literally billions of dollars have been conjured on to firms' balance sheets and profit and loss accounts in recent years, flattering reported earnings. Without manipulations of their pension accounts, industry icons such as IBM, General Motors and Boeing would have reported drastically worse financial results. By adopting grossly unrealistic return assumptions, many companies have grabbed pension “profits” that might never materialize and will have to be written off eventually. If they had accounted for their pension obligations properly, it can be argued, many big firms might even be bankrupt.

The SEC wants to know exactly how pension-fund accounting has been used. The defined-benefit retirement funds of many big companies have huge deficits. But at the stroke of an actuary' s** pen a company can make heroic assumptions about the returns its pension assets will earn and so the rate at which its own liabilities will grow in future, allowing it to claim that the pension-deficit problem is manageable.

Is there a better way to account for pensions? And how should pension funds be run to avoid problems in future? The two questions are intimately connected. A better accounting method should, by letting companies, shareholders and employees know the true state of affairs, lead directly to better all-round administration of pension funds. That would be reinforced if companies did their level best to ensure that their pension schemes are fully solvent—where would the incentive to play accounting games be then?

第2篇Caught in the Act of Becoming

Visit the household of any expectant parent, and you are likely to see a printout of a sonogram* on the fridge. Y ou may even be offered the chance to watch a live-action video of a three-dimensional fetus, the newest ultrasound option. I expected to feel as excited about my first ultrasound as my friends had been about theirs. We were given our own printout of the squid-like creature we'd seen, magnified to fill the screen but in reality no bigger than a thumb. I stared at it and waited for a surge of maternal affection. What I felt was embarrassment at seeing what I might

never have been meant to see---at having caught this entity in the act of becoming. In the past few years, there's been a boom in commercial ultrasound centers, which send images home via CD-ROM or DVD.

When we brought our ultrasound picture home, we put it in a filing cabinet. I wondered if I would ever develop the maternal sensibility that seemed expected of me. When I'd gone to the doctor to confirm my three-week-old pregnancy, a nurse handed me a copy of Parenting magazine.

I knew my body had not yet decided whether it was willing to follow the arduous protocols of pregnancy. Our culture's romance with motherhood can mean lack of interest in women's individual experience. We anoint** a barely pregnant woman a mother, yet remain silent about the frequency of miscarriage—a silence that is often received as a message of failure. Numerous friends discovered how common miscarriage is only after they’d had one—a loss informed by their sonograms, framed with names, dates and measurements, identified as girls and boys, all creating the illusion of arrival.

第3篇The Making of Mozart

It is still a badge of honour for anyone else to be called “a latter-day Mozart”, or “the Mozart of mechanical engineering”. Mozart's music itself is infused with a remarkable energy that seems to provide a soundtrack to the Enlightenment, which was sweeping Europe during the composer's lifetime. From the majesty of his "Jupiter" symphony to the warm-spirited wit and weirdness of his opera The Magic Flute, his music has enduring appeal.

One pianist disputes the idea that Mozart was a “product” of the Enlightenment, emphasizing instead his own unique abilities. Indeed, as an icon of genius, Mozart is a persistent point of reference in debates about nature and nurture, or the relative importance of genes and culture in individual development. But it is too simplistic to counterpose the idea of Mozart as a product of the Enlightenment to the idea of the composer as a born genius. Musical ability and artistic development, like anything else, are more complicated than that.

For the pianist Ronald Brautigam, Mozart's genius was then in combining popular, chirpy tunes that people could whistle in the street with more profound and personal music that demanded more of the listener, so that he appealed both to the general audience and to the connoisseur*. In common with William Shakespeare, Mozart was a businessman as well as a genius, and acted as his own impresario**. Clearly the social context was not irrelevant to Mozart's success, then. In a dynamic and forward-looking Europe, there were new audiences for music and an appetite for novelty. Mozart was patronised by Joseph II—that paradoxical but quintessentially eighteenth-century type, the Enlightenment autocrat—who encouraged the composer to express himself.

Of course, not everyone is capable of becoming a Mozart if only given the right education and circumstances, but neither should we take “genius”literally, as a mysterious accident that

emerges just like that.

(5) In the last few years, managers throughout industry have seen more changes than many of them could have expected to see in their entire working lives having to communicate information which often leads to feelings of insecurity has become a key activity. From being regarded as relatively unimportant in many companies , management employee communication has become a central corporate need. Concordia International provides a good example of a company that has adjusted well to the changing needs for communication . since 1995 , Concordia has been turned inside-out and upside-down, to ensure that it is a marketing –led, customer-responsive business, one that looks outwards at customers and competitors, rather than inwards at its own processes and the way things were done in the past. In the last eight years, Concordia has reduced its workforce by more than 80.000 people - or 35% -on a voluntary basis, with further downsizing anticipated. From being an engineering company, Concordia is now remaking itself as a service company. The role of employee communication in such a context is to build people’s self-confidence, to persuade them that, although it is inevitable that the changes will go ahead, they also bring with them new opportunities for employees. However, this is not an easy task. People tend to be skeptical of these claims and to feel that they are losing touch with the company they have worked for over many years. This is understandable, since many of the old certainties are being swept away , including the core activities of the company they work for. Above all , they have had to face up to the fact that they no longer have a job for life. Research indicates that people respond to this predicament in a variety of ways. The bulk of employees fall into two main categories in terms of their response to the

He was the founder of Confucianism and was respectfully referred to as an ancient “sage”. His words and life story were recorded in The Analects. An enduring classic of ancient Chinese culture, The Analectshas had a great influence on the thinkers, writers, and statesmen that came after Confucius. Without studying this book, one could hardly truly understand the thousands-of-years’traditional Chinese culture. Much of Confucius’thought, especially his thought on education, has had a profound influence on Chinese society. In the 21st century, Confucian thought not only retains the attention of the Chinese, but it also wins an increasing attention from the international community. III.Read the article and choose one best answer to each of the following multiple choice questions according to the article ( 40%): New Economy As America emerges from what may be the shortest economic slump in memory, there is increasing evidence that New Economy factors---- including high productivity rates, better inventory management, more flexible labor markets, and a greater share of jobs in the service sector ---- were in fact responsible for the brevity of the slowdown. As the remarkable US expansion of the 1990s appears to be continuing, the New Economy seems to have passed the first real test of its resiliency. And the structural changes being driven by the New Economy have not receded or been impeded by the changes of the last year; rather, they are as strong as ever. As these structural changes continue to sweep through our national economy, they are restructuring and reshaping the 50 state economies. In 1999, at the height of the New Economy euphoria, PPI released its first State New Economy Index, which included 17 indicators to measure the degree to which state economies were structured and operated according to the tenets of the New Economy. In 2002, after the New Economy has proved itself and is being viewed by most with a more careful and realistic eye, PPI’s 2002 State index uses 21 economic indicators to measure these differences and ass ess states’ progress as they adapt to the new economic order. With these indicators as a frame of reference, the report then outlines a state-level public policy framework aimed at boosting the incomes of all Americans. While in 1999 many thought that the New Economy changed everything (including the need for companies to make a profit), in 2001 many scoffed at it as simply a flash in the pan or, worse, a myth spun by an over-imaginative media. Many questioned if after the superb economic performance of the 1990s we were doomed to return to the dismal days of the later 1970s and 1980s. The reality is that the New Economy was neither an epochal and dizzying transformation nor a slogan generated by some dot-com companies looking to inflate their IPO prices. Rather it was and is the kind of profound transformation of all industries that happens perhaps twice ina century. Such a change is equivalent in scope and depth to the rise of the manufacturing economy in the 1890s and the emergence of the mass-production, corporate economy in the 1940s and 1950s. As we pass through one of those groundswells that regularly but infrequently reshape the economy (and society) from top to bottom, there will be occasional bumps along the way---- like the recent economic downturn---- but these are the negative phrases within what we can expect to be a much longer growth period.

商务英语试题及答案春

2014 春 1.What do you think globalization means What global companies can you think of What industries are they in Do global companies do more harm than good In my opinion, globalization means a company set up subsidiaries in the other countries and make them into local companies. And setting up new companies means the transferring of technology and capital. When referring to global companies ,we may easy to think of P&G,KFC,AIRBUS,NOKIA and so on.These companies are in different industries, some in instant food industries, some in heavy industries, some in aviation industries. It may difficult to say absolutely global companies do more harm or do more good.It obviously that global companies give us much cheaper and higher quality products which make us enjoy a more comfortable life. Also global companies introduced more advanced technology and management skills. But on the other hand, with the strong competition, some national companies is eliminating and our national culture is also disappear with the step of globalization. 2.Are you influenced by brands when you choose products or services (Why or why not) Would you consider buying a new brand of product newly introduced to the market (Why or why not) What do you think a company should do to create brand awareness for a new brand I think whether I influenced by the brands depend on different kinds of things. When I choose something I use everyday such as shampoo,I will firstly take brands into consideration.Because I think shampoo is a kind of chemical product, some small companies may put some unhealthy addition ,which may have a bad influence on my health. But when I choose cloths ,I think style and quality are important than brands.Generally I don’t want to have a try to a new brand of product, because I think it is not worthy for me to try a product with uncertainty. But if there are some discount or free-trying,I’d like to have a try. But sometimes the situation is that kids do not necessarily very keen on this, some children may not have extraordinary talent.
