One afternoon Peter and Jim went out for a bicycle ride. When they passed a place they saw a large area of grass and bushes on fire and a strong wind was blowing the flames towards a village. The firemen had already arrived and were trying to put out the fire. The boys left their bicycles and ran towards the village to see if they could help to fight the fire. On the way they met two firemen.

“Quick, you boys,”said one of the firemen. “Come and help us to pull a pump (泵) to the stream. We can’t beat out the fire. The wind is too strong. The pump is our only hope.”

The two boys ran further until they came to a heavy pump. They helped to pull it to a stream not far from the village.

Soon the pump was working well so the boys went to watch the fire. It had already reached the edge of the village. The boys saw that two houses were on fire, and the flames were attacking a third building. Suddenly there was a shout from one of the villagers.

“Keep away!”a voice shouted.“There’s paint stored in that building.”The boys and villagers moved away quickly. With a loud explosion (爆炸), the whole building burst into flames, sending clouds of thick black smoke into the sky.

At this time Peter and Jim began to think that the whole village would be burnt to the ground. The firemen had left the burning buildings and were pouring (浇) water onto the neighboring houses, trying to stop the fire from spreading. Then the wind died down. A second pump was brought up to help, and the fire was gradually put out.

“It’s soon finished,” Peter said to his friend. “We must go or we shall get home late.” “Yes, come on,” agreed Jim, and with a last look at the ruins, they walked back to their bicycles.

Earlier this year I traveled to Turkana in Kenya. I was there to take pictures of the “broken food syst em”.

As a special visitor, I was greeted with songs and dances. The locals used to sing and dance all the time but now Turkana is silent and has been for some years. No one is singing or dancing any more because they have no food, nothing to celebrate. Many of them are surviving on one handful of corn a day and water, which they can get just every two days.

I met Tede Lokapelo, a local farmer who described the experience of a six-year drought (干旱). Tede used to have 200 goats, but now he has only seven left. He told me that this drought has taught him a hard lesson: It is too difficult to keep animals. He lives on animals. His traditional way of life has been completely destroyed now. Without the food aid they got, Tede is certain that they would starve because there are no other sources to feed themselves left.

Sadly, the same can be heard in almost any developing country around the world. Almost one billion people go to bed hungry each night. The food system is broken. In Turkana, not enough rain has fallen since 2005. They measure rainfall not in days or weeks but in minutes. More and more people are being forced to rely on food aid, but people like Tede don’t want food aid. They want to work and create their own economy. It’s our responsibility to fix the system so that they can support themselves.

Drought is impossible to avoid but famine (饥荒) is manmade, and unless enough money is provided to develop a basic infrastructure (基础设施) for people in the area, thousands more lives are sure to be lost.

We do not know when man first began to use salt, but we do know that it has been used in many different ways throughout history. Historical evidence shows, for example, that people who lived over 3,000 years ago ate salted fish. Thousands of years ago in Egypt, salt was used to preserve the dead.

Stealing salt was considered a major crime (罪行) during some periods of history. In the eighteenth century, for example, if a person was caught stealing salt, he could be put in prison and his ears could be cut off.

In the Roman Empire, one of the most important roads was the one that carried salt from the salt mines to Rome. Guards were stationed along the route to protect against salt thieves, and they received their pay in salt, thus bringing the English word, salary. Any guard who fell asleep while on duty was thought to b e “not worth his salt”, and as a result he would get a little less salt on his next payday. The expression, “not worth his salt”, is still used today in English.

In the modern world salt has many uses beyond the dining table. It is used in making glass and airplane parts, in the growing of crops, and in the killing of weeds (杂草). It is also used to make water soft, to melt (融化) ice on roads and highways, to make soap, and to fix colors in cloth.

Salt can be got in various ways besides being taken from mines underground. Salt water from the ocean, salt water lakes or small seas can be used to make salt. Yet, no matter where it comes from, salt will continue to play an important role in the lives of people everywhere.
