Passage 1

Intelligent young people want to go to university, and it is logical for a country to provide university places for them to ensure that there will be good-trained men and women to run the government and industry in the future. So in the 1960s the government set up a number of new universities in Britain to provide everyone with sufficient opportunity to study. But now something has gone wrong. There is still fierce competition to go to university to study arts and other subjects, but many places for scientists are not taken up.

The new universities concentrated on science because it seemed practical. They developed new courses so as not to imitate traditional university education. Why have their calculations proved wrong One reason is that a lot of young people can get enough qualifications to work in industry by going to technical school. They think university courses are too long and too theoretical. But this does not explain why the majority of students still prefer arts subjects to science subjects.

44.Which of the following shows the advantage of technical schools over universities correctly_______.

[A] They have more qualified teachers.

[B] They have more qualified courses.

[C] The students can be qualified to work within a short time.

[D] If the students get qualification in technical schools, they are more well-received by industry.

45.Why does the majority of the students prefer to study arts in university_______.

[A] The reason is not clear.

[B] The science courses in university are too theoretical.

[C] Arts sound nobler than science.

[D] The curriculum of science course is not well-arranged.

Passage 2

Most Europeans want small cars. Many Americans prefer large cars. As a result, European auto-makers produce a wide variety of economical, lightweight cars while American auto-makers tend to build bigger, heavier cars.

The price of gasoline has much to do with this. Gasoline is expensive in Europe, so

Europeans naturally prefer cars that will go a long way on a small amount of fuel.

Other reasons also enter into the big or little car decision. Many Old World cities have very narrow, winding streets. In these cities a small car is more practical and easier to handle than a large one.

Some Americans like powerful engines in their cars. They enjoy having roomy cars that are comfortable for large families and long trips. They are prepared to pay higher operating costs to get these advantages.

Other Americans, however, have learned to like small, nimble cars. Many visitors to Europe during and after WWⅡ discovered that small cars were fun to drive and easy to park in small spaces. They were delighted to learn how far small cars could go on a few gallons of gasoline.

In the 1950s,many Americans began buying European cars. In 1953, for the first time, the United States imported more cars than it exported. The best seller among these imported cars was an odd-looking but dependable small car from Germany. Americans promptly nicknamed it "the bug".

Today, American car buyers have a wide choice. There are big cars for people who want elbow room, comfort and power. And there are small cars, mostly imported but some American-made, for people who want easy parking and economical operation. 46.Implied but not stated:_______.

[A] All Americans buy European cars.

[B] No one wants to drive a powerful car.

[C] Small cars are not expensive to run.

[D] Americans don't like roomy cars.

47.What does the word "nimble" mean_______.

[A] cheap

[B] beautiful

[C] swift

[D] foreign

48.On the whole, the article tells about_______.

[A] parking cars in America

[B] the price of gasoline

[C] the price of roomy cars

[D] big cars and small cars

49.Why do some people want to purchase big cars _______.

[A] They want to have elbow room, comfort and power.

[B] It is easier to park big cars.

[C] They need to make long-distance journey.

[D] Big cars cost less than small cars.

50.Which statement seems true according to the article_______.

[A] Americans are not accustomed to traveling in Europe.

[B] People like to choose cars from many choices.

[C] People like to buy European cars without any specific reason.

[D] No one drives big cars in Old World cities.

Passage 3

The bath was invented before the bath plug. The bath plug could not have been invented before the bath, except as a small object with which to play ice hockey. The order in which inventions are made is very important, much more important than has ever been realized, because we tend automatically to think that later inventions are better than earlier ones. A moment's thought will show this is not so. If, for example, a solution to today's urban traffic problems was proposed in the shape of a small man-powered two-wheeled vehicle which would make the motor car look like a cumbersome (笨重的)over-powered device, a space rocket trying to tackle suburban problems, we would greet it as a great technological breakthrough. “Bicycle makes car obsolete!”We would cry. Unfortunately, the bike came first, so we shall always unconsciously see it as a cruder version of the car. Other things which may have been invented too early are the airship, the radio, the railway train, the cuff-link.

Consider also the zipper. Zippers represent a technological advance on buttons, being faster and more complete. They are also more liable to come adrift, break, jam, stick and catch. Buttons can only go wrong if the thread is faulty. Even then, buttons can be mended by the user, Zips rarely can.

51.If the bicycle were to be invented now, the car would appear_______.

[A] unsuitable for its purpose

[B] in advance of its time

[C] unnecessarily expensive

[D] too far for safety

52.The railway train and the radio are examples of things which_______.

[A] were not fully appreciated at the time of their invention

[B] are more suitable for use now than when they were invented

[C] are neglected in favor of more recent invention

[D] are less suited to their purpose than earlier invention

53.According to the author, buttons are preferable to zippers because they_______.

[A] are more convenient

[B] are more reliable

[C] cost less to replace

[D] are more complete

54.What conclusion can be drawn from the article _______.

[A] Modern technology can't solve our problems.

[B] Everything has two aspects, advantages and disadvantages.

[C] We should change our usual way of thinking about inventions.

[D] Technological innovations do not always mean more benefits

55.What does the word "obsolete" mean_______.

[A] outdated

[B] slow in movement

[C] ridiculous

[D] awkward

范文:College Students’ Job Hunting

In recent years, college students find it increasingly difficult to get a job. It sounds strange since young college students are usually intelligent, well-educated phenomenon, aspirant and eager to bring their talent into full play. Then what underlies the strange phenomenon

There are several reasons for this. To begin with, nowadays college students aim too high. All they want are “good” jobs which could offer good salary, comfortable working conditions, high social status among others. Consequently, most college students are unwilling to accept vacant jobs they consider not “good” enough. Another reason is that there is a big gap between the majors some students study in school and the demands of vacant jobs. So companies think some students are not fit for the jobs.

Solution to the problem requires efforts on both the society and the students. The companies should value the students, talent and knowledge while the latter should not merely aim at material gains. They should be down-to–earth in building up their career. Furthermore, they should face their weak points so as to improve themselves and be more competent.

III. Reading Comprehension. (2 points for each, altogether 30 points)

Directions: There are three passages followed by questions. Beneath each question there are four choices respectively marked by letters A, B, C and D. Choose the right answer for each question. Write your answers on the answer sheet.

Passage 1

Centuries ago,man discovered that removing moisture from food helps to preserve it,and that the easiest way to do this is to expose the food to sun and wind. In this way the North American Indians produce dried meat and make it into cakes. The Scandinavians make dried fish and the Arabs make dried dates.

All foods contain water-cabbage and other leaf vegetables contain as much as 93% water, potatoes and other root vegetables 80%,lean meat 75% and fish anything from 80% to 60% depending on how fatty it is. If this water is removed, the activity of the bacteria which causes food to go bad is stopped.

Nowadays most foods are dried mechanically. The most common method of such drying

is to put food in chambers through which 430C exists. This is the usual method for drying such things as vegetable, minced meat and fish. Liquids such as milk, coffee, tea, soups and eggs may be dried by pouring them over a heated horizontal steel cylinder or by spraying them into a chamber through which a current of hot air passes. In the first case, the dried material is scraped off the roller as a thin film which is then broken up into small pieces, though still relatively coarse flakes. In the second process it falls to the bottom of the chamber as a fine powder. Where recognizable pieces of meat and vegetables are required,as in soup, the ingredients are dried separately and then mixed.

Dried foods take up less room and weigh less than the same food packed in cans or frozen, and they are invaluable to climbers, explorers and soldiers in battle, who have little storage space. They are also popular with housewives because it takes so little time to cook them. Usually it is just a matter of replacing the dried-out moisture with boiling water.

41. The North American Indians produce dried meat by_______.

[B] pouring the food over a heated steel

[C] exposing the food to sun and wind

[D] replacing the moisture with boiling water

42.How much water do leaf vegetables generally contain _______.

[B] 60%

[D] 93%

43. In the third paragraph, the phrase "in the first case" (Line 5) refers to_______.

[A] the case that liquids are sprayed into a chamber through which a current of hot air passes

[B] the case that liquids are poured over a heated horizontal steel cylinder

[C] the case that the liquids are exposed to sun and wind

[D] the case that the liquids are put in chambers through which 430C exists

44. Which of the following is NOT an advantage of dried food_______.

[A] Taking up less room

[B] Tasting better

[C] Weighing less

[D] Taking less time to cook

45.What does the word "invaluable" in the last paragraph mean _______.

[A] "Priceless"

[B] "Worthless"

[C] "Invariable"

[D] "Inviting"

Those who criticize economic growth argue that we must slow down. They believe that society is approaching certain limits on growth. These include the fixed supply of natural resources, the possible negative effects of industry on the natural environment, and the continuing increase in the world's population. As society reaches these limits, economic growth can no longer continue, and the quality of life will decrease.

People who want more economic growth, on the other hand, argue that even at the present growth rate, there are still many poor people in the world. They believe that only more growth can create the capital needed to improve the quality of life in the world. This debate, we believe, is of vital importance to business and industry. If those who argue against economic growth are correct, the problems they mention cannot be ignored. To find a solution, economists and the business community must pay attention to these problems and continue discussing them with one another.

范文On Saving Money

With the development of society and the improvement of people’s life, more and more families have more extra money. Some people tend to save money to put the spare money into banks. Most of them don’t have much money and are afraid of poor life in the future.

However, others feel like using tomorrow’s money today like some young people. They tend to buy their cars or even computers in installments. To them, what counts is the current happiness, but there is a possibility that they might not pay off the debt one day if they lack self-control.

In my opinion, we should use money properly. The key point is that we must make the best use of the money we have and plan for future life.

新编大学英语第三册各单元作文范文

Unit 1 Sample 1 It is believed that pessimism often leads to hopelessness, sickness and failure, while optimism usually brings happiness, good health and success. Pessimists also make those around them very miserable. Therefore, pessimists should change their way of thinking and overcome the negative aspects of their personalities. Here are a few tips for them: 1. Try to smile more often. A smile has great power. It can chase sadness away. It will make you and other people feel happy. And it may even make things easier and better. Smiling in the morning makes a good beginning for the day. A smile is the most important sign of optimism. 2. Build up your self-confidence. Try to discover as many of your personal strengths as you can. Then write them all down. Read them several times when you are getting ready to do something or when you are facing difficulties. Your list will help you see your abilities. 3. Change your way of thinking. Don't always think that things will go wrong or that if they do there will be terrible results. Instead, convince yourself that things will improve and that you can work hard to help improve them. If you fail, think about what you have learned from the failure. If you succeed, praise yourself. Don't be too modest! There is nothing more encouraging than self-praise. Try your best to become an optimist. Sample 2 Are you an optimist or a pessimist? If you're a pessimist, here is some advice for you. As everyone knows, pessimism is harmful to people. It makes you unhappy and unhealthy, and even brings depression, loneliness and failure. Pessimists tend to suffer more failures and setbacks because they don't believe they can succeed and thus don't struggle for it. Optimism, by contrast, can make you happy, healthy and successful. So it is good for you to change yourself from a pessimist to an optimist. Here are some suggestions for you to become an optimist: 1. Remember that everyone experiences failures and disappointments. So when you fail, don't blame yourself too much. It may not be your fault. 2. When you fail in something, profit from the failure as a learning experience instead of getting depressed. And next time, you can make your plans to be more successful. 3. When you fail, don't be discouraged. Try again. Don't let negative thoughts hold you back. Just give yourself another chance. So never give up just because you failed. Pessimism is harmful, but it can be changed. Trust yourself and try to adopt an optimistic attitude, and then you will be a winner in life more often. Music to Your Gears Andy Ellis
