Thinking as a hobby

At the beginning of this term, we learned an article named thinking as a hobby. The author wrote it with an informal and humorous style to emphasize the importance of thinking. And it is full of anecdotal account of personal experiences.

In the first part of writing, the author described himself as he was still a boy who saw three statuettes from headmaster’s room. These three statuettes represented the whole of life. The leopard stood for all animal needs or desires; Venus stood for love and the Thinker stood for thinking as a uniquely human feature. The author’s description of the statuettes has been achieved a humorous and sarcastic effect, which established a background to support his later analysis of three grades of thinking and some human natures.

So what are these three grades of thinking? There is a brief description of them. First, grade-three thinking: thinking with prejudice, ignorance and hypocrisy. Men are not actually thinking with head but their neck. They enjoy agreement as cows will graze all the same way on the side of a hill. It’s feeling rather than thought. Second, grade-two thinking: the detection of contradictions. Grad-two thinking is a withdrawal, with eyes and ears open. It destroys without having the power to create. It didn’t make for content, though it filled life with fun and excitement. It’s a hobby. Last, grade-one thinking: it’s professional. This way of thinking can not only find the differences, but also create new things. It’s hard to switch from grade-two thinking to grade-one thinking. In the grade-one thinking level, the world outlook is logical and objective.

In this article, the author did not define the three grads of thinking directly. In other way, he used many real examples to prove his idea. We have Mr. Houghton there as an example of grade-three thinking. He always attracted by pretty girls and he was an obvious alcoholic. He did not like the Americans and the French. All of these details the author wrote are to say one thing, which Mr. Houghton thought with his neck. He was probably showing feelings rather than thoughts. That’s exactly what a grade-three thinker is. We also have Ruth there, a serious and attractive girl. As she can only ask for truth but not really set out to find it. She could only be a grade-two thinker. Finally the author described the way he became to a grade-one thinker, although the numbers

of them were few and far between. And the word professional is the exactly one for them.

After reading this article, I begin to ask myself which grad thinker I am. Somehow I think I just belong to grade-three thinking. I’m feeling things with heart rather than thinking with my brain. It’s funny though that most decisions I made were just with feelings, not a deep thought. If the grade-one thinkers were few and far between, I should at least be a grade-two thinker; I should at least let thinking be my hobby.

In a word, thinking is not just for professional thinkers like philosophers. It is something all educated people should enjoy doing, and it is considered one of the most precious qualities in young scholars for the healthy mental development.

Beyond the leopard was a naked, muscular gentleman, who sat, looking down, with his chin on his fist and his elbow on his knee. He seemed utterly miserable. Some time later, I learned about these statuettes. The headmaster had placed them where they would face delinquent children, because they symbolized to him to whole of life. The naked lady was the Venus of Milo. She was Love. She was not worried about the towel. She was just busy being beautiful. The leopard was Nature, and he was being natural. The naked, muscular gentleman was not miserable. He was Rodin's Thinker, an image of pure thought. It is easy to buy small plaster models of what you think life is like.
