How to be a qualified teacher

How to be a qualified teacher? Maybe different people have their own opinions. Someone may consider that a qualified teacher should be warm-hearted; someone else may consider that a qualified teacher should have broad and profound knowledge; others may consider that a qualified teacher should have the ability to express themselves clearly, in an interesting manner and intelligently. In my opinion, there are several important points; such as a passion for teaching, concern for students, outstanding knowledge and so on.

I consider that a passion for teaching is the most important requirement of being a qualified teacher. Supposing a teacher does not like the responsibilities or stress of teaching. How will this affect his or her class? In a classroom, if a teacher has a passion for teaching, he will pass on all of his knowledge to the students. He will use many different methods to keep his class active and, moreover, students will be glad to pay attention to what he is saying. Nevertheless, if a teacher does not have any passion, the class will be completely the opposite. Maybe the students will feel the classes are boring. Students will not want to attend this teacher’s class. Do we consider this kind of teacher to be “qualified”? I feel that if we want to exc el in our occupation, we should dedicate ourselves to the work. So passion for teaching plays an important role.

Concern for students also plays an important part in being a qualified teacher. Every student is different and possesses his or her own particular good qualities. Perhaps they display their merits in class, but sometimes they do not. A qualified teacher should pay attention to this. If a student has not been doing very well in his studies lately, a qualified teacher will talk with him or her and ask them what is wrong with them. The teacher will help them to improve their study and help them with any problem they may have, if possible. Sometimes, perhaps it is only a few words from the teacher to the student, but it may influence the student’s a ttitude, maybe even his or her whole life. Most students desire the teacher’s attention, sometimes just a few kind words of praise and encouragement.

Knowledge is an essential element of being a qualified teacher. When students ask questions of a teacher, they should not get a “I don’t know” reply. How terrible! If a teacher is qualified and competent, he will find the answer pass on this information to the students. However if a teacher has insufficient knowledge, he will probably teach the wrong knowledge to his students in the classroom. Students will not be aware that the knowledge which they have received from their teacher is inadequate for them to do well in their studies. Better untaught than ill taught. How important admirable knowledge is. A good teacher sometimes needs to be like an actor in the classroom. In order to help students understand better, the knowledge that the

teacher wants to impart, he may use actions. There are many different kinds of laughter, for instance: a smile, a grin, a giggle, a chuckle, a joke, a heehaw, and so on. While teaching, a qualified teacher can use these acting strategies. Then the students can comprehend the teacher better. Furthermore, the classroom is also more active. Then the students receive knowledge with pleasure. Supposing a teacher just tells students the meaning of the word, “grin” to be a very wide smile. Perhaps the students would not understand it at all or would soon forget. The student may know the meaning of the word “grin” is a wide smile, but he would not know how to use it. Just know it. And the class is as dry as a chip. Doing some actions can help the students to comprehend the knowledge that they have been taught. A parrot can be taught to speak, but the parrot would have absolutely no understanding of what it was saying. Students are not parrots, they need to understand what they are learning.

Different students have a better comprehension with regard to a teacher’s question. Some smart students can answer the questions quickly. In contrast, some students can not answer as quickly. At times such as this, a good teacher will be patient. Perhaps the student has had something explained several times, but they still do not understand. The qualified teacher is always patient and never blames the student or thinks the student is stupid. The teacher should sympathize with the student and look forward to the student finally comprehending the question. The qualified teacher would encourage the student instead of just complaining about the student al l the time, or saying “You are too stupid and I can not bear it”. All this will dishearten the student. They will have no desire to study from then on. A qualified teacher should have a large capacity for tolerance. Some students simply do not like studying and are very naughty in class. In fact they can be very lovable outside the classroom. The qualified teacher accepts the student’s shortcomings. Teachers should not lose their temper easily, but must realize that all students are different from each other. Everyone has good days and bad days. Maybe one day a student does something terrible, but without any bad purpose or intention. Be patient.

Everyone should be kind to others, a qualified teacher especially so. A qualified teacher ought to be kind and always try their best to help students solve their problems. When students are in trouble, a qualified teacher is essential. The qualified teacher is kind-hearted and not too harsh if students need help. Kindness is a basic factor for any teacher, not only a qualified teacher.

Probably there are some other factors on being a qualified teacher. But in my opinion, the most important factors are: tolerance, patience, concern, knowledge and kindness. Education is very important to

everyone, including the nation. Teachers should try their best to help the student as well as teach them knowledge. I will be a teacher in the future. I will do everything in my power to become a qualified teacher.
