She wouldn't take a drink, much less could she stay for dinner. 2. He thought I was lying to him, whereas I was telling the truth. 3. How do you account for the fact that you have been late every day this week? 4. The increase in their profits is due partly to their new market strategy. 5. Such measures are likely to result in the improvement of work efficiency. 6. We have already poured a lot of time and energy into the project, so we have to carry on. 1.I don?t think that he would commit robbery, much less would he commit violent robbery. 2. Men earn ten dollars an hour on average, whereas women only seven dollars. 3.Once the balance in nature is disturbed, it will result in a number of possible unforeseeable effects.

More people die of tuberculosis (结核病)than of any other disease caused from a single agent. This has probably been the case for quite a while. During the early stages of the industrial revolution, perhaps one for every seven deaths in Europe’s crowded cities were caused by the disease. From then on, though, western eyes, missing the global picture, saw the trouble going into decline. With occasional breaking of war, ∧rates of death and infection in Europe and America dropped steadily through the 19th and 20th centuries. In the 1950s, the introduction of antibiotics weakened the trend in rich countries, and the antibiotics were allowed to be exported to poor countries. Medical researchers declared victory and withdrow. They were wrong. In the mid-1980s the frequency of infections and deaths started to pick up again around the world. Where tuberculosis had vanished, it came back; in many places where they had never been away, it grew worse. The World Health Organization estimate that 1.7 billion people (a third of the earth’s population) suffer from tuberculosis. Even the infection rate was falling, population growth keep the number of clinical cases more or less constant at 8 million a year. Around 3 million of those people died, near all of them in poor countries. 1. by 2. in 3. was 4. the 5. strengthened 6. withdrew 7. it 8. estimates 9. kept 10. nearly B. 1. B 2. D 3. A 4. B 5.

Google翻译搜索使用技巧系列一:“相关搜索”和“猜测搜索” 从Chen Zhong-hung这个名字谈用google搜索人名 今天在做英译中翻译时碰到了这个Chen Zhong-hung,原文是“Chen Zhong-hung, counsellor in the Mainland Affairs Council of the Taiwan ...”。
