Life is like the four seasons. Now I am very old, but when I was young, it was the spring

of my life. I was born, I played a lot, and then I started school. I learned many new things.

Like a flower, I grew bigger every day. There were happy days and sorrowful days: some days the

sun shone(闪耀), and some days it didn’t.

In my twenties, I had a good job. I was strong and happy. Then I married and had a child.

In those days, I didn’t have much time to think. Every day I was busy and worked very hard.

And so, I started to get some white hairs. The summer of my life passed quickly.

Then the days got shorter. Leaves fell from the trees. My child was a university student,

and then an engineer. My h ome w as much q uieter. I started walking slowly. One day I stopped working.

I had more time. I understood this was my autumn, a beautiful time when the trees change color

and give us delicious fruits.

But the days kept getting shorter and colder. Winter has come, I am older and weaker. I know

I do not have many days left. I will enjoy them to the end.

Many students ask for advice about improving their English. Here are some basic(基本的) questions.

The first question is about real English. Li Hao from Hubei wrote, “I enjoy watching English films and listening to real English songs. But it takes a long time. What do you think?”

This is a great way to learn English! Talk about the film or song with your friends, and

guess the meanings of the new words. Just enjoy yourself!

The second question is about speaking. Sam, from Suzhou wrote, “Our school has a foreign teacher. But I’m shy and can’t speak to her. What should I do?”

When I visit China, lots of people in the street say, “Hello! How are you? Where are you from? Do you like China?” These are good questions to start a conversation. Many people are

shy when they speak English, so before you begin, take a deep breath(深呼吸) and smile! Smiling always helps.

The third question is about vocabulary(词汇). Oliver, from Anhui wr ote, “I want to remember all the new words. I write them down, but I forget them quickly. What should I do?”

Try to remember eight or ten words a day. Write them on pieces of paper and place them in

your bedroom. Say the words when you see them, and change them every day. And when you’re shopping, how about counting the English words, or saying the English names for everything you see?

For years I wanted a garden. I’d spent hours thinking of different things I could plant.

But then one by one I had five children. I had to raise (抚养) them and had no time to think

of a garden.

Often when my children wanted something expensive, I’d have to say, “Do you see a mone y tree outside? Money doesn’t grow on trees, you know.”

Finally, all five finished university and went to other cities to work. I started thinking

again about having a garden. But thinking of the cost (成本), I gave up.

Then, one spring morning, on Mother’s Day, I was working in my kitchen when I saw a new

tree in my yard. Then I put my glasses on. I couldn’t believe what I saw. There was a money

tree in my yard!

I went outside to look. There were dollar bills all over that tree. There was also a note:

“Money does grow on trees. Love, your kids.”

That was three years ago. My garden is now very pretty. When I am in the garden, I don’t seem to miss(思念) my children as much as I once did. It feels like they’re right there with me.

I’m still not sure whether money grows on trees. But I know love does!
