If there is one thing I’m sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.

The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives—the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因)engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do—as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.

It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传送)electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I’m pretty sure how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by

picking out the things you want to read—sports and international news, etc. .

I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media. They actually feed off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air. And as for the Internet, it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

A. The Best Way to Get News

66. From the passage, we can infer____.

A. newspapers will win the competition among the different media

C. television will take the place of newspaper

D. the writer believes some media will die out

Let us say there is something you don’t know how to do.

In the past if you were determined to learn, you might have

called a friend or relative, taken a night class or walked down to the local

library for a research term. But now a host of websites are springing up to

provide free practical advice on these subjects and actually anything else you

can think of.

In one sense, these“how-to”sites represent(表明)a part of the growing

world of online learning. This tradition found one of its earliest forms in the FAQs or Frequently Asked Questions files—that began on Usenet, the Internet’s global discussion group. These FAQs, many of which still circulate(go round continuously), took a specific subject and explained it to complete novices.

But “how-to”sites take the FAQs idea in a somewhat different direction by addressing subjects that aren’t necessarily related to discussion forums(论坛). These sites take the style of a written tutorial(teaching period)and a tone of friendly advice. Possibly the biggest and best known of these sites is learn

2. com(www. learn2. com). It offers nearly 1, 000 free tutorials and adds new ones frequently(经常) for a job interview.

At ehow. com(www. ehow. com)you can learn how to train for your first marathon, how to buy a vacation home, or how to make a movie in eight steps.

Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. , from Kenya, and Ann Dunham, a white American from Wichita, Kansas. His parents met while attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where his father was a foreign student. They separated when he was two years old and later divorced. Obama’s father received a Doctor’s Degree from Harward University and returned to Kenya and saw his son only once more before dying in an automobile accident in 1982.

After her divorce(离婚), Dunham married Lolo Soetoro, and the family moved to Soetoro’s home country of Indonesia in 1967, where Obama attended local schools in Jakarta until he was ten years old. During his time in Indonesia, he first attended St. Francis Assisi Catholic, a religious school, for almost three years. When Obama was in the third grade, he wrote an essay saying that he wanted to become president. His teacher later said that his reason for becoming president was that he wanted to make everybody happy.

He then returned to Honolulu to live with his maternal(母亲一方的) grandparents while attending Punahou School from the fifth grade in 1971 until his graduation from high school in 1979. Obama’s mother returned to Hawaii in 1972 and died of cancer a few months after the publication of his biography, Dreams from My Father, in 1995.

In his biography(传记), Obama describes his experiences growing up in his mother’s middle class family. Of his early childhood, Obama recalled, “That my father looked nothing like the people around me—that he was black as pitch(沥青), my mother white as milk—barely registered in my mind. ”

Some of his fellow students at Punahou School later told the Honolulu Star-Bulletin that Obama was mature for his age, and that he sometimes attended college parties and other events in order to associate with African American students and military(军事的) service people.

4. 【解析】in→to 这里是limit. . . to. . .

5. 【解析】as→that 这里是so that. . . 句型表示“目的”,so as用于so as to结构中,后不能跟从句。

6. 【解析】it→them 代词指代关系错误,them代替上文中提到的books。

7. 【解析】ask后加for ask for表示“请求”。

8. 【解析】that→where where引导非限制性定语从句。

permit sb. to do sth.

A “I am not an American,” mark twain (1835-1910) once said, “I am the American.” He had good reason to say so. A Nobel winner in literature, US playwright Eugene O’ Neill called him “the father of American literature”. Twain is someone Americans are taught to love. Older relatives, English teachers and the media often praise him. But when you actually take the time to read the adventures of Tom Sawyer, which was first published 140 years ago, you find that his work is more wonderful than you could ever have imagined. The novel describes a young boy named Tom Sawyer growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. He explores the countryside on a riverboat with his friends, falls in love with girls, starts secret clubs and searches for treasure. Twain’s idea of childhood is magical – a time of imagination, wonder and, of course, adventure. More importantly, through the eyes of Tom Sawyer, Twain cleverly makes fun of US culture. For example, Tom hates going to church, and Twain uses Tom to make fun of religion and its old traditions. “Often, the less there is to justify a traditional custom, the ha rder it is to get rid of it,” he writes in one chapter. Twain’s writing is full of these kinds of critical points about culture and politics. That’s why he is so loved in the US –he wasn’t afraid to state his opinions, and he did so clearly. For instance, Twain didn’t like US wars abroad. In 1900, after the US invaded the Philippines, Twain wrote in a newspaper article: “We do not intend to free, but to subjugate the people of the Philippines… We have gone there to conquer.” He also believed strongly in wo men’s right to vote in elections and gave a famous speech on the subject, called “Votes for Women”, in 1901.
