My favourite detective stories---Sherlock Holmes Series Reading is one of my hobbies. To be frank, I like detective stories more than other type of story.

1. Why do I love reading detective stories?

Detective stories are always exciting and fun for me. Whenever I feel bored, I will pick up one of my favorite detective story books, especially one telling about Sherlock Holmes, and read it. It helps me to relax.

It is very important that when you read these stories that you are very anxious to seek the final answer as to who was the real murderer. You should desire to know it very much. Then you will read them more carefully.

It makes you feel as if yourself were the detective, and you were handling a difficult crime case at that moment. That?s fun. Don?t you think it?s fantastic?

2. What are my favourite detective stories?

My favourite detective stories are the Sherlock Holmes series. All these stories are so exciting that I really wish I could have a chance to solve all of these cases with Holmes. If it were possible, I am sure that it would be the most unforgettable experience in my life. Have you ever heard of these stories? If not, I hope that you can read some of them in the future.

Who is the the writer?

The writer of them was Conan Doyle. He wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that featured Holmes. All of the stories are about Holmes and his friend Dr. John H. Watson, a biographer.

How many novels and short stories have you read?

So far, I have just read the first novel, A Study in Scarlet, which was the first published book of the Sherlock Holmes series. I love it very much. It impressed me a lot.

What is the novel about?

The story showed how Holmes used some detailed information such as footprints and bicycle tracks to find out who were the killers.

I have also read some short stories, such as The Blue Carbuncle, The Beryl Coronet, The Adventure of Thor Bridge, The Adventure of the Creeping Man and so on.

3. What can I learn from Sherlock Holmes?

Sherlock Holmes is my idol. Do you know why? After I had read these stories I thought a lot about Sherlock Holmes.

The biggest impression that Sherlock Holmes made on me was his intelligence. I think he was one of the cleverest men in the world. He was very smart. He was always able to find out the bad guy in the end. That is amazing.

Furthermore, as I mentioned above, he was very careful and sensible. He paid great attention to details that others might neglect. He must have been really careful when he tried to solve all these cases. Or he would not have been so successful.

I am really impressed by his abilities to solve problems and I admire the way that he handled different cases.

On the contrary, I am a careless person. I often make some simple mistakes in my homework just because I am not careful enough. So this is one thing that I should learn from him. I

think if I could be more careful in my daily study, I might study much better than I do now.

At the same time, we should learn how to use some scientific methods to plan or solve problems, which can help us to improve our work efficiency.

If Holmes had not been so organized, I am sure he would not have become such a famous detective. You know I always do things without thinking or planning. So it easily gets messy in the end. What do you think of Holmes? After reading all of these stories, do you adore him as much as I do?

4. Would I want to become a person like Sherlock Holmes? Why?

Of course. I want to be like Sherlock Holmes. In my eyes, he was a great person. Actually, he was a hero and a genius. He dealt with different kinds of crime cases.

He tried his best to solve many problems. I think his job was very interesting and exciting. I also know that his work was very dangerous. However, it was worth doing.

What have you been influenced?

Sometimes I like to imagine that if I were a detective it would be a big challenge for me to handle such cases. I am not as smart as Sherlock Holmes but I am luckier to have many new technologies and equipment to help me find the clues and then solve the problems. If I suspect someone, I may use a machine to test whether that person tells a lie or not. I also may use a computer to analyze some information, such as handprints, DNA and things like that. I think if Holmes had high-tech equipment, he would have solved cases more quickly and more successfully.

More importantly, I would set up a team to work together with me. As the saying goes, two heads are better than one. Have you ever imagined that you could do some different jobs? Sometimes trying to be a different type of person can make our lifes more interesting.

5. Have I ever used some reasonable deductive methods during my daily life?

Yes. Whenever I am in a public place, such as a library, bus stop, or railway station, I always try to judge people by their clothes or by the things that they bring. I try to guess what they are doing and where they come from, just as Sherlock Holmes d id. Holmes? well-known saying …It is a capital mistake to theorize before you have all the evidence? always helps my thinking. I also believe that …I cannot live without brainwork.?I may not have a chance to deal with a real crime case like Sherlock Holmes did but, in reality, sometimes you have to think in a logical way when you deal with a problem. I would like to be a detective when I grow up. I think it would be very cool.

6. Was Sherlock Holmes a real person?

When asked this question, Conan Doyle always maintained that Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, with whom Doyle had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. It is said that Dr. Bell was also interested in crime and assisted the police in solving a few cases. I think Dr. Bell must have been very good at drawing large conclusions from the smallest of observations just like Sherlock Holmes.

7. Something might happen someday.

The reason why I try my best to do all these things is not only because of my interest but also because I hope to help a lot of people, especially poor people, someday.

8.Why have I choosen this topic?

I choose this topic because I like detective stories much better than other types of stories. Detective stories are always exciting and fun for me. When I read these kind of stories, I am always very anxious to know the final answer. It makes me feel as if I were the detective and I were handling a difficult crime case at that time. My favourite detective stories are those of the Sherlock Holmes series. There are four novels about Holmes. Although I only have read the first novel, 'A Study in Scarlet', I have become a big Sherlock Holmes fan. He has impressed me a lot and I have learnt many things from the novel. I even want to be a detective myself in the future. That's why I am interested in talking about Holmes.

9.What is 'A Study in Scarlet' about?

第一部分主要介绍案情，写的是华生医生从战场因受伤回到英国后，在一次偶然的机会下认识了要和他共同租房的福尔摩斯。有一天，福尔摩斯接到了格雷格森上校的来信邀请他去破一件案子，于是他便与华生一同前往劳瑞斯顿街的凶案现场，在那，他们在一座无人居住的

空房子里发现一具没有外伤的尸体，死者是美国人。现场的墙壁上用鲜血赫然写着“RACHE”。同时，还发现了一枚滚落的戒指、两种不同的脚印、几处墙上的指痕，之后，经过福尔摩斯细致的调查和缜密的推理，终于找到了凶手。第二部分主要回忆了凶手之前在美国与死者的一些恩怨情仇，解释了凶手的杀人动机，并交代了凶手的作案过程，使故事变得更加圆满，组成了《血字的研究》这个有关爱与复仇的惨案。

There are two parts to this novel. In the first part, the writer mainly describes the case. Doctor Watson rented the same room with Holmes. One day, Holmes was invited to work on a case and he went there with Doctor Watson. A body without obvious injury was found in a deserted room. The dead man was an American. At the crime scene, there was a big word 'RACHE' on the wall written in scarlet blood. They also found some other things, such as a ring, two different kinds of footprints and some finger marks on the wall. Later, through careful inspection and reasoning, Holmes finally found the murderer.

In the second part, the writer mainly recalls the story that happened between the murderer and the victim in America and explains the motivation of the murderer. At the same time, the writer also explains how the murderer carefully planned to kill the victim. All these things make the whole situation very complete and show us an interesting and fascinating story about love and revenge.

10.What is your favourite story of Holmes? Could you please tell me the story?

11.Are there any shortcomings (缺点）of Holmes?

I cannot see many shortcomings because Holmes is my idol and the writer only describes how intelligent and meticulous 谨慎he was. However, nobody is perfect. Holmes is not an exception (他也不例外)。I think he smoked too much. That would have been bad for his health. I think if he had quit smoking maybe he would have been smarter.

12.What do your parents think about your hobby? Do they like Holmes too?

My parents support my hobby a lot because they think reading this kind of book can make me smarter and I can learn many things about our daily life. It can increase my knowledge and broaden my horizons. They even have taken me to see movies about Holmes and have let me listen to stories about Holmes on the radio. Actually, we always have a lot of fun when we do some activities together about Holmes . They even have told me that if they had gotten a chance to become a detective like Holmes when they were young, their lives would have been much more colourful and adventurous. Therefore, I think my parents also must have been huge Sherlock Holmes fans when they were about my age.
