Have you ever heard of the story of a young girl who lost her young life when saving an injured red-crowned crane? Her name is Xu Xiujuan. The story took place in Yancheng Wetland National Nature Reserve set up in 1983. It is in the Chinese Yellow Sea Wetlands, which is one of the most important wetlands in China, with an area of more than 450,000 hectares(公顷).

The temperature in the wetlands is usually neither too high nor too low. It is a perfect home for birds. The food here is rich. There are a large number of insects and plants. Many birds live here all year round, while some only stay here for winter. It also attracts some endangered birds like rare red-crowned cranes. It is also an ideal home for milu deer, which are regarded as the first-class animal under protection in China.

Offering food and home to some special kinds of animals and birds is not the only reason why we need to protect wetlands. The functions(功能) of wetlands are far beyond that. They can also help prevent flood(洪水) and purify(净化) wasted water.
