Abstract

An investigation was made into the influence of CO-evolving and CO-evolving groups on the

activities of activated carbon fibers ACFs for the oxidative conversion of SO into aq.H SO in

224 the presence of O and H O.The results indicated that the amount of evolved CO determined the 22

SO removal activity of ACFs,whereas,the amount of evolved CO did not correlate with the 22

ACFs activity for SO removal.A direct proportionality between the amount of evolved CO and 2

the enhanced activity of SO removal was confirmed by using different oxidizing agents for

2

changing the types and amount of oxygen functional groups in ACFs.q2001Elsevier Science B.V.All rights reserved.

1.Introduction

The issue of SO removal from the atmosphere and flue gas with more efficiency and 2

low cost has been studied by scientists.The matters that SO can be converted into

CaSO by the utilization of limestone or SO adsorbed can be oxidized into SO by 423 using active coke have been commercialized.However,the problems such as the

disposal of the by-product waste,a large volume of reactors,limited adsorption capacity

and the loss of carbon are yet still to be solved1–4.

In a report5–13,it has been argued that by using activated carbon fibers ACFs,

SO can be removed continuously in the presence of O and H O at room temperature 222
