I've always been fairly skeptical about any research with a conclusion t hat people are e ither happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still,I was struck by a report which concluded that today's children are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children aged 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.

Why are America's kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolation(隔离) brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other things and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.

Considering that we can't turn the clock back, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation.

At the top of the list is nurturing(培育) a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress. To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs

and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.

Limit the amount of virtual(虚拟的) violence your children are exposed to. It's not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.

Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard or Yale.

Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn't have to ruin your life.

51.According to the analysis, compared with normal children today, children treated as mentally ill 50 years ago ________.

A. were considered less individualistic.

B probably suffered less from anxiety

C.were less isolated physically

D.were probably less self-centered

D.Lessons learned from the past should not be forgotten.

53.The author thinks that the conclusions of any research about people's state of mind are ________.

A.illogical B.questionable

C.surprising D. confusing

54.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.To children, anxiety is completely avoidable.

B.Exercise does not help to lessen children's anxiety.

C.TV and computer play an important role in isolating children from the real world.

D.Make sure to keep pushing the children so that they have a better chance of success.

Mattel Inc is withdrawing 4.4 million Polly Pocket toys with magnets (磁铁)after some of them caused serious injuries to children who swallowed magnets that fell off. Tiny magnets inside the toys may fall off without being noticed by parents and babysitters. For those who are determined to be a fashion(时尚)designer, it is not enough to have succeeded in college. The real test is whether they can survive and become established during their early 20s, making a name for themselves in the real world where business skills can be as important as talent and creativity.

Fashion is a hard business. There is a continuous amount of stress because work is at a constant and extremely fast speed to prepare for the next season's collections. It is extremely competitive and there is a constant need to make attractive advertisements of the latest fashion in newspapers and magaz ines.It also requires continual freshness because the appetite for new ideas is hard to satisfy."We try to warn people before they come to us about how tough it is." says Lydia Kenny, the Head of Fashion at St.Martin's School of Art in London."And we point out that drive and determination are absolutely necessary."

This may seem far removed from the popular opinions of fashionable young people spending their time designing pretty dresses. That may well be what they do in their first year of study but a good college won't be slow in introducing students to commercial realities."We don't walk our foot on the blossoming (绽放的)flower of creativity but in the second year we start introducing the restrictions of price, producing ability, marketing and so on."

Almost all fashion design is done to a brief. It is not a form of self-expression as such, although there is certainly room for imagination and creativity. Most young designers are going to end up as employees of a producer or a fashion house and they still need to be able to work within the characteristic style of their employer.Even those students who are most modern in their own taste of clothes may need to adapt to produce designs which are right for the mainstream of

market. They also have to be able to work at both the expensive and the cheap end of the market and the challenge to produce good design inexpensively may well be demanding.

59.Which of the following is mainly discussed in the passage?

A.Talent in fashion.

B.Good marks at college.

C.Ability to create new designs.

D.Business skills in fashion industry.

60.What can we learn from the second paragraph?

A.Fashion designers are highly motivated and really determined.

B.Good preparations for the next season can reduce stress.

C.Advertisement business is very competitive.

D.Consumers' appetite for new ideas keeps changing.

61.How does St.Martin's School of Art train her students of fashion?

A.To require students to develop their creativity in their designing.

B.To encourage the new students to design freely with imagination.

C.To demand students to make pretty dresses for companies.

D.To offer commercial courses for the new students.

62.What does the underlined word "this" in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.Lydia Kenny's opinion.

B.The competitive business world.

C.The real situation in fashion industry.

D.The warning to the young designers

Personality types are connected with structural differences in the brain, which could explain why one child grows up to be impulsive (冲动的)and outgoing while another becomes diligent and introspective.

Structural differences between the brains of 85 people have been measured and linked with the four main categories of personality types, which were classified as " novelty seeking ", characterized by impulsive actions; "harm avoidance", marked by pessimism and shyness; "reward dependence", with an addictive personality; and "persistence", who are people tending to be diligent, hard-working and perfectionists.

The researchers said the brain differences are structural and can be measured in the size of specific regions of the brain that appear to be linked with each of the four personality types. For instance, people defined as novelty-seeking personalities had a structurally bigger area in the brain while people with harm-avoidance personalities had significantly smaller volumes of tissue in brain regions.

The fact that characteristics are reflected in specific structural differences is useful to know, for instance, when it comes to understanding a child's behavior and choosing the right approach so that somebody who is, for example, particularly timid, might be helped through education and development.

There is no point shouting at a child who is very shy and criticizing them , because it does not come naturally to them to put themselves forward. But actually knowing there is a biological basis for this helps educators or parents to use the right approach to helping a child to compensate.People who have a reward-dependence personality could, for example, be helped at an early

age because they are at risk of turning to drink, drugs or food if they do not get the family support and encouragement they need.

"This study shows that personality characteristics are something you are born with, but their full expression can be adjusted during development with the right approach," said Professor Venneri, who carried out the study with colleagues from the University of Parma in Italy and Washington University in St Louis.

If you know it's not something you do but something you are, you can change the environment to reduce the risk.Knowing that someone has such a predisposition (体质)could help them" adopt preventive strategies and avoid situations where they might seek rewards which could be potentially harmful.

63.Which type of person may turn out to be drug-abusers?

A."Novelty seeking".B."Reward dependence".

C."Harm avoidance".D."Persistence".

64.Which of the following is true about shy people?

A.They are often shouted at and scolded.

B.They can naturally put themselves forward.

C.They structurally have a smaller brain region.

D.They are too timid to be educated and helped.

65.What's the main idea of the passage?

A.People have chances to change their personality types.

B.Scientists have identified four different personality types.

C.Structural differences in the brain have effects on education.

D.Personality types are related to structural differences in the brain.

66.The author writes the passage to ______.

The World Health Organization says obesity rates are rising in Pacific island countries. So,too, are health problems linked to being overweight.

The WHO says a major reason for the rising obesity rates is an increase in imported foods. It says many Pacific islanders have replaced their traditional diets of vegetables and fruits with imported processed foods.

Dr.Temu Waqanivalu is with the World Health Organization's South Pacific office in Suva,Fiji. He says many of the imported products lack nutritional value.

Temu Waqanivalu said:“In some of the places, you'd be amazed to see how a bottle of Coke is cheaper than a bottle of water. I think that represents the kind of off-environment we've created that doesn't really encourage or make lifestyle choices an easy choice for the population.”

And a lack of physical activity among many Pacific islanders only adds to the obesity problem.

The WHO says more than 50 percent of the population is overweight in at least ten Pacific island countries. The rate is as high as 80 percent among women in the territory of American Samoa. Fiji had the lowest obesity rate at 30 percent.

In all, almost ten million people live in Pacific island countries. The WHO estimates that about 40 percent of them have health disorders related to diet and nutrition.

Diabetes rates are among the highest in the world. Forty-seven percent of the people in American Samoa have diabetes. So do 44 percent of the people in Tok elau,a territory of New Zealand.

By comparison, the diabetes rate is 13 percent in the United States,a country that has its own problems with rising obesity.

Officials al so note an increase in nutritional problems like anemia and not enough vitamin A in the diets of Pacific islanders. Dr.Univalvular says treating conditions related to obesity and diet puts pressure on limited health resources and budgets.
