Whether it’s an office, factory, store, hospita l, or school, you see a (40) amount of effort. Much of it is just that: effort. Everybody is working, but unless you’re in a super effective place, little work is (41) . That is, work there, but it’s a verb, not a noun. The (42) , final resolution, the closure of that effort is (43) .

Closure is the end, the best result, the payoff of effort. (44) (as a verb). And we’ll get a lot more work (as a noun) done.

A lone time ago I was puzzled by the story of the jumping frog. It seems if you put a fog on the floor ten feet from a feeding dish and with each jump it was able to clear half the distance between it and the dish. (45) , and the distance between it and the dish would get shorter and shorter, but it would never get to it. Even given an infinite amount of time, it would go hungry. (46) .

11. M: I wish you had told me about your holiday.

W: I’m sorry. I thought you knew I went to my cousin’s place a lot.

Q: Why is the man upset?

12. W: Let’s go to the dance at the Student Center on Friday.

M: I’d like to, but I’m going to a le cture. Thanks for asking me though.

Q: What is the man going to do on Friday?

13. W: Prof. Smith sure was acting strange today.

M: I noticed that too. She was talking so quietly and then not giving us any homework.

Q: What can be inferred about Prof. Smith?

14. W: Since it’s the rush hour, let’s take the subway.

M: OK, it’s not as direct as the bus, but it’s faster and there will be less chance of a traffic jam.

Q: Why do the man and the woman decide to take the subway?

15. M: Bill has only b een on the job a week and already he’s acting like he is the boss.

W: He’s not going to last long with that attitude.

Q: What does the woman imply?

16. M: Jim is very sick these days. He coughs so badly.

W: In my opinion, he really should listen to the doctor and cut down on smoking.

Q: What does the man think of Jim?

17. W: Do you think this symphony is wonderful? I could listen to it all day.

M: That’s interesting. You’re the only one that feels that way as far as I know. I’m afraid that’s not my cup of tea.

Q: What does the man mean?

18. M: My parents are coming to see my apartment this weekend.

W: Looks as if I’d better lend you my vacuum cleaner then.

Q: What does the woman imply?

M: How do you do, Miss Brown? Do you mind if I ask you some questions about your job?

W: Of course not. Go ahead.

M: You’re been working in a university before, haven’t you?

W: Yes, in Britain, yes.

M: What, um, [19] how do students go about getting jobs when they graduate?

W: Well, most universities have a Careers Advice Service. I used to know the people in the Careers Service in Newcastle University and they, in fact, seem [20] fairly successful in finding jobs for students. [21(1)] They are able to get jobs for 30%~40% of new graduates. M: That seems a fairly low percentage.

W: Er…well…it’s not if you consider the various other options which people take up. For example, there are a fair number of people, I don’t remember the exact number, who go into further study, who car ry straight on into master’s degree, either at the same university or another university. So that’s fair chunk. Then there are others, a second group of people who decide not to take a career job immediately after university. Instead, they decide to take time off, maybe see the world. And there is a third group, the people who can’t actually get the jobs they want immediately, and who may take something else in the meanwhile, while they wait for a job they really want. So when I say 30%~40% find jobs through the Careers Service, that doesn’t mean that only that number find jobs. [21(2)] A lot of other people find jobs through the newspapers.

M: So it is quite high really, yes?

W: On, I think so, relatively, yes. And quite a lot of other people, of course, look in newspapers and the particular journals or magazines which advertise jobs in this fields they are interested in.

Conversation Two

M: Susan, I could really use your help this weekend.

W: What is it, John? Another term paper?

M: No, no. This is easy compared to that. My cousin is coming on Thursday. She has an interview at the college and I promise my aunt I would look after her. We are going to the game on Friday, but [23] Saturday I’m on duty at the library all day and can’t get out of it. Uh, [22] I was wondering if you could show her around during the day and maybe we can all meet for dinner later.

W: Sure, I don’t have any plan. What kind of things does like to do?

M: [24] Actually I haven’t seen her for three years. She lives so far away. But this w ill be her first time on a college campus. [25] She is still in high school. So she’d probably enjoy anything on campus.

W: Well, there is a music festival in the auditorium. That’s a possibility. I only hope it doesn’t snow. They are predicting 6 to 8 inches for the weekend. Everything will be closed down then. M: Well, how about for the time being I’ll plan on dropping her off at your place on the way to work, around eleven? But if there is a blizzard, I’ll give you a call and see if we can figure

something else out.

W: Sounds good. Meanwhile I’ll keep Saturday open. We can touch base Friday night when we have a better idea of the forecast.

M: I hope this works out. I feel kind of responsible. She won’t know the way around, and I want her to have a good time. Anyway I really appreciate your help. I owe you one.

W: No problem. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.

Section B

Passage One

【听力原文】

Eating is usually a group activity. Different racial, national, and religious groups develop their own food preferences. [28] These preferences are passed on to the children. When the children grow up, they usually feel most comfortable with the kinds of food they had in their own homes. Food choices have little to do with hunger. You may eat what your friends eat. You may use food to identify yourself as a member of a group. [26] Some people order the most expensive dishes on a menu, just to show that they can afford them. Expensive food, like an expensive car, can help to make some people feel important. Low-cost menu choices may be just as nourishing. Your feelings and your appetite work together. You may overeat when you are worried or lonely. People sometimes eat when they feel insecure or think that no one likes them, or they may turn to food to calm themselves. Emotions may also cause under-eating. [27] People who feel down may eat very little. Many people worry so much about being overweight that they don’t eat enough. They see themselves as heavier than they really are. Or they think skinny is beautiful. They may even become weak or sick from not having enough food.

Passage Two

【听力原文】

In the United States, many people once lived in large, two- and three- storied homes. Today, many people would like to live in such houses but most can’t. [29] They don’t have enough money to buy them or even to make the first payment. So many people rent from month to month. But some Americans really want to live in a house of their own. So they build their own home. They buy a house that is situated in an area where houses are cheaper. It is better to reside in a bad part of town, they think, than not to live in a house at all. Or they buy an old home and redesign it. Then they decorate it with old-style furniture. Sometimes they can make an old house look more beautiful than a new one. Usually it is not different for people to find an old house to buy. [30] Many old people decide that they don’t need a big house after their children leave. So they sell their house and move into a comfortable apartment. But when people move into a house, they sometimes have problems. [31] Homeowners have to do their own maintenance. For example, if the roof leaks, one cannot ask the landlord to fix it. On the other hand, people can redesign their houses in any way they want without having to be afraid of being thrown out by the landlord.

Passage Three

【听力原文】

Let’s look back in history to an earlier way of life. At one time children didn’t have to learn any more than how to cope with their physical environment. They had to learn to be careful around moving objects, to draw back when they got too close to something dangerous. [33(1)] They didn’t need a special school to learn these things other than the school of experience. Nor was the school necessary for them to learn how to survive because [32] their parents taught them all they needed to know about how to hunt and to till the soil. But as societies became more complex, [34(1)] people depended more on others who were living far away, so it became important for children to learn to read and write. [34(2)] When money was created, they needed to learn to count and calculate. Children had to know these things in order to survive in this new expanded environment. [33(2)] Because such skills could not be learned simply through first-hand experience, [35] schools became necessary so the children could be taught what we now call the “three R’s”—reading, writing and arithmetic.

11. M: Welcome back. How was your vacation?

W: Just fine. We had only one good day as far as the weather was concerned. But the hotel was beautiful, and I’ve never known friendlier people.

Q: What does the woman imply?

12. M: I missed the bus again today because I turned the alarm clock off in my sleep.

W: Try putting it far enough away from your bed that you’ll have to get up to turn it off.

Q: What does the woman suggest the man do?

13. M: Mary, are you reading?

W: Not at all. I’m trying to make this skirt short. The fashions this year say you should wear skirts one inch above the knee.

Q: What can we learn from the conversation?

14. W: Did you listen to the news? Who won the championship in the match?

M: Robert Brown. I think he was fantastic. This is an important comeback I his career.

Q: What can we learn about Robert Brown?

15. W: Hoe did you get here so quickly? You told me your car was broken.

M: Yeah, it is. I wanted to take a taxi, but my next door neighbor saw me walking and offered me a ride.

Q: How did the man get there?

16. W: What do you think of the plan to build an atomic power station in this village?

M: I have strong objection to the idea. It will ruin the village. And in any case I don’t think it’s necessary.

Q: What is the man’s attitude to the plan?

17. M: All these books are very interesting and instructive, but I don’t know which one suits me

best for my course.

W: What about this one? It’s said to be the best seller in this field.

Q: What do we learn from the conversation?

18. W: Good morning. This is Dr. Allen’s office.

M: Good morning. I’d like to have it done this week if possible.

Q: Who is this woman?

Conversation One

【听力原文】

W: Wang Ning, do you think we make too much use of tinned and frozen food in Britain? The supermarkets here are full of them, aren’t they? Perhaps that is why our food is not very tasty, as you may have found out already.

M: But frozen foods are con venient and handy, aren’t they? Just think of all the tedious work we have to do in the kitchen if it weren’t for frozen foods.

W: Yes, that’s true! But you spend much more time cooking and preparing meals in your country than we do in Britain, don’t you?

M: Yes, I suppose we do. You make less fuss about food than we do. In my own country, we have two big meals a day, that is, lunch and dinner, and we spend a lot time preparing them. [19] Here in Britain, you have only one big meal a day, apart from breakfast and lunch snack, and you spend much less time preparing it.

W: Yes, but we’re just as fond of good and delicious food as you are.

M: Well, you certainly don’t show it!

W: We do fuss about our meals sometimes, and remember, [20] we like to eat out on special occasions, such as weekend evenings, birthday parties and other celebrations. [21(1)] London is full of foreign restaurants where you can get all the exotic dishes of world. You must come out with us one evening, Wang Ning.

M: Thank you very much, I’d love to. [21(2)] And that’s what I like about London. There’s always so much to see and so. I think I have made a wise decision when I chose to line and study in London.

Conversation Two

W: Please sit down, Mr. Wilson. [22(1)] My name is Jane Smith and I’m the personnel manager. M: Hello. How do you do?

W: Now, [22(2)] this is just a short preliminary interview. I’d like to talk about your present job and that you’ve done up to now.

M: Yes, of course.

W: Well, could you tell me how long you’ve had y our present position in Evening News. It is Evening News, isn’t it?

M: Yes, that’s right. Um, I’m not sure, let’s see, I left university in the summer of 1998…is that right? Yes, in 1998. Then I was unemployed for about two months, and then I traveled round Britain for a few weeks, so [23] it must be more than seven years now in fact.

W: Um…yes. And have you any particular reason for waiting to change jobs? I mean, why do you want to move?

M: Well, I actually like my present job and still find it interestin g. The salary is OK, so it’s nothing to do with money. Though you can always do with more, [24] I suppose the thing is that I’m really very ambitious and keen to get promoted, so that’s the real reason.

W: You say you like your job. Can you tell me what aspect you like most?

M: Oh dear! That’s difficult. There are so many things. The colleagues are quite nice to get along with, so there’s a good co-operative atmosphere. And compared to other press, the working

conditions are great. I mean the office itself is good.

W: Um, yes.

M: And then there’s the fact that as a journalist I had done an article for the newspaper about what happened at home or in the world, so I had to make decisions. [25] I must be responsible for what I have written. You know, that is what I really like the most about the job. They give me lots of room for initiative.

W: Yes, well, we are looking for someone who isn’t a clock-watcher and who isn’t too concerned about working fairly long hours.

M: Oh, I don’t mind that. I’m used to it. I o ften work long hours. I was made to work at weekends. There was a lot more pressure in writing an article for the newspaper.

W: And what about your education? You went to Leeds University, didn’t you?

M: Yes. After leaving school I started a diploma course in design at the University, but I decided to change courses and did Postgraduate Diploma in Social and Public Policy instead.

W: Good. Yes, thank you for your coming. I’ll call you about our decision as soon as possible. M: Thank you very much.

Passage One

【听力原文】

[26] Lions prefer to eat without having to do much work. When resting in the shade, they are watching the sky. And [27(1)] if they see the birds fly down, they immediately sense that something must be happening. Even in the heat of the day, they will certainly arise and run a mile across the plains to find out what is going on. [27(2)] If another animal has made a kill, they will drive it off and take the animal for themselves. A grown lion can easily consume 60 pounds of meat at a single feeding. Often, they eat until it seems painful for them to lie down. [28] The female lions are learner and swifter, and as a result, are better hunters than the males. Most kills are made at night or just before dawn. The kill is the most exciting moment of their time—about 20 hours a day—sleeping and resting. Lions are also social cats. And during these times of leisure, they love to romp with each other, and the young lions are always playing among themselves and with their parents.

Passage Two

What is the sky? Where is it? How high is it? What lies above the sky? I am sure that you have asked these questions. They are very difficult to answer, aren’t they?

If someone asked you, “What color is the sky?” I expected that you would answer: Blue. I am afraid that you would be wrong. [29] The sky has no color. When we see blue, we are looking at the blue sunlight. The sunlight is shining on little bits of dust in the air.

Is the sky full of air? I am sure you have asked this question, too. We know that there is air all around the world. We could not breathe without air. [30] Airplanes could not fly without air. They need air to lift their wings. Airplanes cannot fly very high because as they go higher, the air gets

thinner. [31] If we go far enough away from the earth, we find there is no air.

Perhaps we can answer some of our questions now. What is the sky? Nothing. Where is it? It is all around the world. The sky is space. In this space there is nothing except the sun, the moon and all the stars.

Passage Three

【听力原文】

Boris has starred in a dozen horror movies. He always plays a monster, a ghost, or some other frightening character. He uses a lot of make-up to make his face as horrifying as possible. Boris finds it interesting to play monsters. He has never been interested in playing romantic heroes, even though he is quite good-looking without his make-up.

Last year, after he had made five horror movies in arrow, [32] Boris was so exhausted that he wanted to take a long vacation. He went to a tro pical island where no one knew him and he didn’t have to do anything but lie on the beach. [33] But soon he was bored. Lying on the beach all day with nothing to do can be boring. Boris wanted to do something interesting and exciting again. After that vacation, Boris decided that he liked his exhausting schedule after all.

When he came back from his vacations, Boris began working on a new movie right away. [34] He was so glad to be occupied again that he didn’t think about being tired. All this attention was devoted to his performance. Boris was determined to be more frightening in this movie than he had ever been before.

In real life, Boris isn’t frightening at all. People are always amazed to see how handsome he is off the screen. [35] He is also very kind, especially with children. That is why Boris was so surprised last week when a little girl he met on the street screamed and ran away from him. Boris had forgotten to take off his make-up.

Conversation One

【听力原文】

W: Now, please tell me something about the difference between American education and education in many other countries.

M: In many countries, children have a lot of homework in the lower and high school. But in the U.S. extracurricular activities such as sports, chorus, the student computer club, the military drill them, the student newspaper etc. All of them are important in high school. [19] These activities give students valuable lessons in leadership, teamwork and effective communication, which are very useful in their future work..

W: Good. Now, why does the educational system in America attract so many foreigners?

M: Well, the U.S. system emphasizes individual choices. Many American high school students decide to take difficult classes in subjec ts they’re interested in. And if they want to continue credits to earn a bachelor’s degree. In many other countries it’s difficult to get into college, but once you’re there, you ca coast along and not work too hard.

W: You’re right. American education beg ins to get very competitive in college.

M: [20] And for foreign students, the huge amount of high-level reading and writing that is expected proved to be quite difficult. From all the research that’s been done on how to learn a language, it’s clear that mo st foreign students have never read enough English to develop a vocabulary equal to that of native speakers.

W: That’s true enough! Many foreign students never get interested in reading English for fun.

They are only interested in learning grammar. But tell me, why is your English so good?

M: Ever since I was a kid, I’ve read a lot of American storybooks. My mother worked in a library in Stockholm. She was always borrowing English books and magazines for my brother and me.

W: Well, that explains your excell ent English. OK, let’s go on. How long does it take for a college student to get a BA or a BS?

M: After fours years of study, students receive either a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science degree. But just like high school, many students flunk out of college because of their poor grades.

W: And why do some students get poor grades?

M: [21] Poor grades can be due to medical problems, too many hours spent working a part time job, partying often, or simply not having the attitude and skills needed to perform well in a college classroom.

W: Thank you, Victor, for giving me so much information about the American education.

M: They’re all right, I guess. I don’t know. It seems like they never tell us what we really need to know.

上外中级口译第三版听力教程原文及讲解--Unit 4

中级口译听力教程第三版2A An intermediate course of English listening. Third edition. Unit four. Part one. How children learn social behaviors. 2. Exercises. 1. This is a talk about how children learn social behaviors. Listen to the first part of the talk and then supply the missing words you hear from the talk. W: Hi, welcome. Today we are going to talk about how children learn social behaviors, especially how they learn lessons from the family, the most basic unit of our social structure. There are a lot of discussions these days about how families are changing, and whether non-traditional families have a good or bad effect on children. But it’s important to remember that the type of the family a child comes from is not nearly as important as the kind of love and support that exist in the home. I’d like to focus on three of the ways the children acquire their behavior, through rewards, punishments, and finally modeling. First then, let’s discuss rewards. A reward can be defined as a positive reinforcement for good behavior. An example of a reward is when the parent says if you eat your vegetable you can have ice-cream for dissert, or a parent might say finish your homework first then you can watch TV. Most parents use rewards unconsciously, because they want their children to behave well. For example, a parent might give a gift to a child because the child behaved well, or parents might give child money for doing what the parents asked. 2. Now listen to the second part of the talk. Provide the missing information in the spaces given below. The opposite of the reward is a punishment. Punishments are the second important way in which a child is socialized. All of us have probably been punished in our lives. For example maybe our parents stopped us from going out with friends, because we did something we were not supposed to do, or maybe they wouldn’t let us watch TV, because we got a bad grade on the test. Both rewards and punishments are controversial. Many people think they are not effective or necessary, especially when used often. Let’s take this situation. A young boy has been asked to take out the garbage. Listen to situation A. The parents say if you take out the garbage for me I will give you a cookie. Some people argue that this reward is unnecessary, because it’s like a bribe. They argue that the child should be taught that it’s his duty to help with house hold chords, and that he should not get a special reward for doing something that’s his responsibility. Situation B would go something like this. David please take out the trash now. And David says OK dad. Not surprisingly punishment is extremely controversial, especially when the punishment is physical. Some of us grew up expecting to be spanked if we misbehaved. For example, our parents may have hit us on the hand if we talked back to them. But I don’t agree that spanking can teach children anything. And sadly some children are subject to really serious physical abuse. According to a study I just read one in 22 children is a victim of physical abuse. Children who come from homes where violence were used to solve problems are much more likely to abuse their own children when they become adults and have their own families. Part 2. Statements. 3. Exercises. Listen and then choose the answer which is closed in meaning to each statement you hear. 1. Since you said you totally agreed with Tom’s views, you ought to have stood up for him in the argument at the meeting yesterday afternoon.
