Teaching procedures:
Step I Pre-reading (2’)
1.T: Today, we’ll read an article in the Lesson 64 in the New Concept English to learn a great
building in Europe. (Teaching skills: Reading skills, Prediction: The teacher can repeat the meaning if some of the students don’t catch it.) Now, listen carefully, ladies and gentlemen, one question for you! What do you know about the Channel Tunnel? I’d like to get some of you to answer the question. Just think about it.
2.S1: (Raising hands and standing up) I’m glad to answer the question. As far as I am concerned,
the Channel Tunnel, often called the Chunnel, is a railway tunnel that lies underneath the water of the English Channel and connects the island of Great Britain with mainland France. The Channel Tunnel, completed in 1994, is considered one of the most amazing engineering feats of the 20th century.
Step II While-reading (5’ in reality, now just using directions)
1.T: That’s wonderful! Thank you. Is there anyone who’d like to tell us more about the Channel
Tunnel? (Showing the Ss some of the pictures in hand) No? All right, then. Please look at these pictures. Please read the passage to get the answers to the three questions below.
2.Allow them some time to read the passage to research the specific information. The students
can mark the answer and take some notes to the question in the passage.
Step III Post-reading activities (5’)
1.T: All right now. Time is up. Have you all finished reading the passage? (Ensure the majority
of the Ss have finished reading the passage.)
2.T: Listen carefully, ladies and gentlemen. This time I won’t ask you questions one by one.
Now, you’ll have to form a group of two, you and your partner. Let’s do pair work.
(Teaching skills: Summarize skills. The teacher must get the Ss to know what to do. If not, repeat the directions.) One asks the three questions and the other will try to answer them without looking at the text. Please do the practice carefully and then I’ll get some of groups to do it in front of the class.
3.Allow the Ss some time to practice the dialogue. (The teacher walks around the class and
helps those who are in need of help. Be sure to get all the students involved in the practice.)
4.T: OK. Which group would be the first to make the dialogue?
5.
6.
make some positive assessment about their performance.
Step IV Homework and Project (3’)
1.T: Summing up (Teaching skills: Reading skill): OK, ladies and gentlemen! I’m very pleased
to see that you enjoy the reading so much and know something about the sites. And that all of us took part in the conversation actively and willingly makes me really happy. (The teacher is excited and smiling.) Well, actually, there are more magnificent buildings in the world. Would you like to surf the Internet and find some information about other world heritage sites?
2.T: It’ll be better to download some pictures and make a vivid PowerPoint. I’ll get some of you
to present your work in class next week.
3.T: (Prediction :) If some students don’t have a computer, they can go to the library to find
some information or they can carry out cooperative learning. Two or more students may work together to find information on line and get ready for the presentation next class.
