In this paper,a network power ?ux control of a variable speed wind generator is investigated. The wind generator system consists of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)connected to the network asso-ciated to a ?ywheel energy storage system (FESS).The dynamic behaviour of a wind generator, including the models of the wind turbine, the doubly fed induction generator, the back-to-back AC/AC converter, the converter control and the power control of this system,is studied. Is also investigated a control method of the FESS system which consists of the classical squirrel-cage induction machine (IM)supplied off the variable speed wind generator (VSWG).In order to verify the validity of the proposed method,a dynamic model of the proposed system has been simulated, for different operating points,to demonstrate the performance of the system.

1.Introduction

The use of the wind energy conversion systems (WECS)has been signi?cantly expanding over the last few decades. This is due to the fact that this energy source of production of electricity is emission free [1–4].

The wind turbines’variable speed operation has been used for many reasons.Among these are the decrease of the stresses on the mechanical structure, acoustic noise reduction and the possibility of active and reactive power control [1].Most of the major wind tur-bine manufacturers are developing new larger wind turbines in the 3–6-MW range. These large wind turbines are all based on variable speed operation with pitch control using a direct-driven synchro-nous generator (without gearbox)or a doubly fed induction gen-erator.The main advantage of the DFIG is that the power electronics equipment only carries a fraction of the total power (20–30%)[5];this means that the losses in the power electronics converters,as well as the costs, are reduced.

The produced extra electrical energy, when available,is con-verted into kinetic energy and stored under this form in a ?ywheel. This latter energy is reconverted into the electrical form for use as a top up in case the production level is not suf?cient. The ?ywheel drives an electrical generator (consisting of an induction machine)which produces electricity, causing a decrease in the system rotating speed, which,in turn, means a decrease in the level of the

stored energy.FESS may thus be used as power regulators over short periods of time for electrical power quality improvement,as far as the voltage and frequency dynamics are concerned, long storage system lifetime and better ef?ciency [6–9].These systems are suitable for improving the quality of the electrical power pro-duction by the wind generators and enable them to contribute to the ancillary services [11,15,17].

In this paper,a model allowing the simulation of the behaviour of the VSWG associated to the FESS is developed.Firstly, the wind generator (wind turbine,gearbox,DFIG,AC/AC converter and ?lters)is modelled [8,9,12–14].Secondly,the maximum power point tracking (MPPT)algorithm to maximize the generated power is presented.Thirdly, the power control algorithm,as well as the RST regulator,is given. In order to control active and reactive power exchange between the wind generator and the grid,a vector-control strategy will be proposed. Then, the ?ywheel energy stor-age system arrangement is described. The FESS system considered for this application consists of a ?ywheel,a classical squirrel-cage induction machine (IM)and a recti?er–inverter cascade. The IM operates in the ?ux weakening region, the ?eld-oriented control will be considered here for the IM-based FESS [6–9].Finally,the system shown in Fig.1is used for numerical simulation and the related results are presented.

where r is the air density,R is the blade length and V is the wind velocity.

The turbine torque is the ratio of the output power to the shaft speed U t,T aer?P t/U t.

The turbine is normally coupled to the generator shaft through a gearbox whose gear ratio G is chosen in order to set the generator shaft speed within a desired speed range.Neglecting the trans-mission losses, the torque and shaft speed of the wind turbine, referred to the generator side of the gearbox, are given by

T g?T aer

and U t?

U mec

G

(2)

where C g is the driving torque of the generator and U mec is the generator shaft speed, respectively.

A wind turbine can only convert just a certain percentage of the captured wind power. This percentage is represented by C p(l) which is function of the wind speed, the turbine speed and the pith angle of speci?c wind turbine blades[14,15].

Although this equation seems simple,C p is dependent on the ratio l between the turbine angular velocity U t and the wind speed V.This ratio is called the tip speed ratio:

l?U t R

V

(3)

A typical relationship between C p and l is shown in Fig.2.It is clear

from this?gure that there is a value of l for which C p is maximum

and that maximize the power for a given wind speed. The peak

power for each wind speed occurs at the point where C p is maxi-

mized. To maximize the generated power,it is therefore desirable

for the generator to have a power characteristic that will follow the

maximum C p_max line.

The action of the speed corrector must achieve two tasks

[13]:

-It must control the mechanical speed U mec in order to yet

a speed reference U mec_ref.

-It must attenuate the action of the aerodynamic torque, which

is an input disturbance.

The simpli?ed representation in the form of diagram blocks is

given in Fig.3.

If the wind speed is measured and the mechanical characteris-

tics of the wind turbine are known,it is possible to deduce in real-

time the optimal mechanical power which can be generated using

the maximum power point tracking(MPPT)[19].The optimal

mechanical power can be expressed as

4.System control

The system of the studied device (Fig.5)included three control blocs (DFIG control, converter 1control and FFSS control). The ?rst one is derived from the control of the active and reactive power exchange between the grid and the DFIG.The second one is derived from the control of the difference active powers between the grid and the DFIG stator. The third one is dedicated to the control of the energy storage in the

?ywheel.

4.1.Active and reactive DFIG power control

When the DFIG is connected to an existing grid, this connection must be established following three steps. The ?rst step is the synchronization of the stator voltages with the grid voltages which are used as a reference. The second step is the stator connection to this grid. After that, the connection can be effectively established.Once this connection is achieved, the third step is the regulation of the transit of the power between the wind generator and the grid (Fig.5).

A d –q reference frame synchronized with the stator ?ux is employed [13].By setting the quadratic component of the stator to the null value as follows:

f d s ?F s and f q s ?0

(15)

Then the torque is simpli?ed as indicated below:

(16)

The electromagnetic torque, and subsequently the active power,

will only depend on the rotor current along the q -axis.By neglecting the stator resistance R s ,Eq.(5)gives

v d s ?0and v q s ?V s

(17)

In order to calculate angles for the Park transformation for stator and rotor variables, the stator pulsation and the mechanical speed must be sensed.

By choosing this reference frame, stator voltages and ?uxes can be rewritten as follows:

4.2.Control of an FESS associated to a VSWG

4.2.1.Control strategy for the FESS

The wind generators are considered as negative loads to the power grid because they do not consume the electric energy but generate it without participating to the ancillary services. It is well known that the wind speed is ?uctuant and, because of this, the wind generator delivers a variable electrical power. To overcome this drawback,an auxiliary energy storage system is to be installed in order to produce some additional energy and regulate the elec-tric power delivered into the grid [6,18].

To maintain the reactive transit power for the converter 1at zero value, then

To maintain the power factor at unity, the reference grid reactive

power,Q g_ref ,is ?xed to zero value.

5.Results and discussion

The results of simulations are obtained for reactive power Q g_ref ?0and active power P g_ref ?à1.5MW.Figs.7and 8show,respectively,the angular speed random and the slip of the DFIG.Fig.9,on the other hand, shows the variation of the mechanical power against the generator speed.Fig.10,in turn, gives the grid active and reactive power. The grid power components follow their references perfectly.Fig.11gives the stator active and reactive

power while Fig.12gives the rotor active and reactive power. The grid voltage and current waveforms are shown in Fig.13a.Note that the sinusoidal current is out of phase with respect to the voltage (Fig.13b),this implies that the DFIG supplies the grid with a purely active power. However, the rms values of the grid current and voltage are independent of the variation of the wind but only on the active and reactive reference power. The rotor voltage and current waveforms are plotted in Fig.14a.The frequency of those latter voltage and current vary according to the slip s (Fig.14b–d).For s ?0,the rotor voltage and current are continuous. The difference active power between the grid and the stator is shown in Fig.15.The stator voltage and current waveforms of the IM and the related expended plots are shown, respectively,in Fig.16a–c.From Fig.19the FESS powers P w and the corresponding reference powers P w_ref show that the active power exchanged between the FESS and the grid is very ?uctuant,as the wind generated power is,which causes the freewheel to slow down/accelerate (Fig.17).The IM operates in the ?ux weakening region and the magnitude of its stator ?ux changes as a function of the speed (Fig.18).The decoupling effect between the direct and the quadratic rotor ?ux of the IM is shown in Fig.20.

6.Conclusion

The network power ?ux control of a variable speed wind gen-erator (VSWG)associated to a ?ywheel energy storage system (FESS)has been presented in this paper. The ?rst part is dedicated to the analysis, modelling and simulation of a variable speed wind turbine using a doubly fed induction generator in along with the back-to-back converter.Stable operation of the DFIG was achieved by means of a stator-?ux oriented control technique. The opera-tional principal of the proposed wind-power generator model and the validity of the control system have been demonstrated through the steady-state and transient responses of the power
