A

It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned.Fortunately, the moments are usually not obvious to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say.If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, don’t worry about them, Just continue as if nothing happened.

Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that don’t really matter .If you have ever listen to Martin Lut her King’s famous speech –― I have a dream‖, you may notice that he stumbles(结巴)his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don’t remember. Why? Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making.People care a lot about making mistakes in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performer. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that express the speaker’s ideas clearly and directly.Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speakers’ attractiveness by making him more human. As you work on your speech, don’t worry about being imperfect.Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.

When it comes to friends, I desire those who will share my happiness, who possess wings of their own and who will fly with me.I seek friends whose qualities illuminate(照亮)me and train me up for love.It is for these people that I reserve the glowing hours.

When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and ―too serious‖ about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say:―Let’s start with

a train whistle today.‖ We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or storie s that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changing into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped.

( Paragraph 3) When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend. He was in despair and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at that time.We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted. We gave London to each other.( Paragraph 4) For almost four years I have had remarkable friend whose imagination illuminates mine.We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way, in the other’s dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind.In my most interesting moments, I often think:―Yes, I must tell….‖, though we have never met.

It is such comforting companions I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kindness is worth more to me than the lifetime services of a psychologist(心理学家),who will only fill up the healing silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend.

46.In the eighth grade, what the author did before developing proper social behavior was to ______.A.become serious about her study

Federal regulators Wednesday approved a plan to create a nationwide emergence(被认可的) alert system using text messages delivered to cell phones.

Text messages have exploded in popularity in recent years, particularly among young people. The wireless industry's trade association, CTIA, estimates more than 48 billion text messages are sent each month. The plan comes from the Warning Alert and Response Network Act, a 2006 federal law that requires improvements to the nation's emergency alert system. The act tasked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) by coming up with new ways to alert the public about emergencies.

"The ability to deliver accurate and timely warnings and alerts through cell phones and other mobile services is an important next step in our efforts to help ensure that the American public has the information they need to take action to protect themselves and their families before, and during, disasters and other emergencies," FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said following approval of the plan.

Participation in the alert system by carriers –telecommunications companies is voluntary, but it has received solid support from the wireless industry.

The program would be optional for cell phone users. They also may not be charged for receiving alerts. There would be three different types of messages, according to the rules.

The first would be a national alert from the president, likely involving a terrorist attack or a nationwide disease. The second would involve "approaching threats," which could include natural disasters like hurricanes or storms or even university shootings. The third would be reserved for child kidnapping emergencies. The service could be in place by 2010.

People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.” Medical Daily notes that the number of detailed personality traits (特质) detected in the study include a person's general age, income, political tendency, and other personality traits, including someone's emotional stability. Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone's shoes. In the study, 63 students from the University of Kansas looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study's participants. Participants in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire. So, what do your shoes say about your personality? Some of the results were expected: people with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier footwear was typically worn by outgoing people. However, some of the more specific results are interesting. For example, “practical and functional” shoes were generally worn by more

A When the sand began kicking up and hitting our faces, I started to worry that maybe we had made a mistake. That afternoon, my dad had stood on the deck (露台) of our home and laughed as our neighbors packed up their cars and headed inland. They left to spend the night in motels or at friends’ homes that were out of range of approaching summer storm. Challenging the weather that threatened to damping our spirits, we lit a fire on the beach. Dad told jokes and we had a good time. When it was 6:30 p.m., all laughter disappeared. Our eyes were drawn to the sky. A tornado (龙卷风) was headed straight for us! In a flash, we were all on our feet. The wind started screaming and now we were running to the cottage. My mom stopped next to the front door. “Where can we go?” She shouted at my dad. Most cottages on this part of Lake Michigan had been built without basements. Ours was no exception. The huge windows and the cot tage itself wouldn’t offer safety from high wind. “Follow me!” my dad yelled. We crawled (爬) beneath the deck, pressing ourselves against the foundation of the cottage. Between the deck supports, we watched the approaching storm in silent terror. My dad shouted, “Hold on!” and something else I couldn’t hear over the screaming wind. I think he was praying. By the time it reached our cottage, it was nothing more than a strong wind. The rest of the storm lasted for an hour and then simply blew away. “Next time, we’ll stay inland at Grandma’s. Okay?” my dad said. 21. What did the family do before the storm came? A. They left the motels. B. They packed up the cars. C. They stayed on the beach. D. They visited their neighbors. 22. What was the family’s immediate action when they saw the tornado approach? A. Closing their eyes tightly. B. Praying in silent terror. C. Crawling on the ground. D. Running away at once. 23. Where did the family stay in the storm? A. Under a deck. B. In a basement. C. Inside the car. D. Behind a door. 24. What can be the best title for the text? A. Life on the beach B. An Unusual Cottage C. Surviving a Storm D. My Admirable Family B The Best of Alaska

2019级高三年级第一次英语周考(志强专用) 英语试卷 命题教师:焦国禄 第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A How often do you let other people like a bad driver, a rude waiter, or an angry boss, change your mood? Sixteen years ago I learned a lesson. I got in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver used his brakes, the tires made a loud noise, and at the very last moment our car stopped just 3cm from the back of the other car. I couldn’t believe it. But then I couldn’t believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, turned his head around and he started shouting at us. I couldn’t believe it! My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. So, I said, “Why did you just do that? This guy could have killed us!” And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, “The Law of the Garbage Truck”. He said, “Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of anger and disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they look for a place to dump it. And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you.” So I started thinking how often I let Garbage Trucks run right over me and how often I take their garbage and spread it to other people. I began to see Garbage Trucks. I see the load people are carrying. I see them coming to dump it. And like my taxi driver, I don’t take it personally. I just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. 21. What happened to the author on his way to Grand Central Station? A. He was caught in a traffic jam. B. He had a fight with his taxi driver. C. His taxi almost ran into another car. D. His taxi suddenly got a flat tire. 22. When the author saw his taxi driver smile and wave at the driver of the black car, he_______. A. got very angry B. was deeply impressed C. felt quite disappointed D. praised him for his manners 23. The underlined part “the load” in the last paragraph probably refers to _______. A. the bad mood B. poor habits C. waste materials D. great pressure
