Section A

Directions: Read the following two passages. Fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word. For the other blanks, fill in each blank with one proper word. Make sure that your answers are grammatically correct.

(A)

The first year of school can be stressful - not for the kids, but for the parents!

They want their little ones to do well at school and some pushy parents will already be thinking about the problem (25) ______ they can get their child to the top of the class.

But some parents are concerned about the rules for when children should start school.

The School Admissions Code for England says that children (26) ______ join the reception class the September after their fourth birthday.

But here is the problem: A four year old who is born in August could be in the same class as someone who was born in October of the previous year! (27) ______ of them were four years old in September.

The older child will probably do better in class tests. He or she is almost a year (28) ______ (old)! This can affect the confidence of the younger child.

Now England's schools minister, Nick Gibbs says that the rules should (29) ______ (change). In an open letter to councils, schools and parents he says, “Parents know their children best”.

And he said that some parents “fe el forced (30) ______ (send) their child to school before they are ready”.

He proposes that children that are born during the summer can join the class when they are four or wait (31) ______ they are five.

Dr. David Whitebread, an educationalist from Cambridge University says that the UK has a summer-born effect just (32) ______ children start school so young.

“In countries with these later starting ages, there is a very much reduced summer-born effect or none at all”, he said.

(B)

Face-Reading System

If a potential customer enjoys your advertisement, they are more likely to buy your product. It’s a simple enough concept, (33) ______ it is extremely difficult to know how well your advertisement is being received in the real world. Now a new system could help advertisers know exactly how their latest offering is going down with viewers, just by watching their faces.

The system, (34) ______ (develop) by Daniel McDuff and colleagues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab, looks at how muscles in the face move in response to (35) ______ (watch) a video. Software can then classify what is viewed as positive facial responses and smiles during the video and from that predict (36) ______ advertisements the viewer most enjoys.

The team collected more than 3200 videos of people, (37) ______ faces were filmed by their own computers’ webcam as they watched three advertisements online during the Super Bowl in 2018. After each commercial, one for Doritos, one for Google and one for V olkswagen, the viewers were asked if they liked the video and whether they would want to watch it again. In tests, the system made correct predictions more than 75 per cent of the time.

The system would be a gift for advertisers (38) ______ (try) to grab the attention of potential customers on the internet. In future, the system can be used to personalize advertisements for viewers as they (39) ______ (view) programmes online, depending on their reaction, or as a more effective way of testing how good a new advertisement is (40) ______ appealing to customers.

Section B

Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Early on, Paul Allen and I set the goal of a computer on every desk and in every home. It was a brave idea and a lot of people thought we were out of our minds to __41__ it was possible. It is amazing to think about how far computing has come since then, and we can all be proud of the __42__ role Microsoft played in that revolution.

Today I am thin king much more about Microsoft’s future than its past, though. I believe computing will __43__ faster in the next 10 years than it ever has before. We already live in a multi-platform world, and computing will become even more spreading. We are nearing the point where computers and robots will be able to see, move, and interact naturally, unlocking many new __44__ and enabling people to do even more.

Under Satya’s leadership, Microsoft is better positioned than ever to lead these advances. We have the resources to drive and solve tough problems. We are __45__ in every aspect of modern computing and have the deepest commitment to research in the industry. In my role as technical advisor to Satya, I get to join product reviews and am __46__ by the vision and talent I see. The result is evident in products like Cortana, Skype Translator, and Holo Lens -- and those are just a few of the __47__ that are on the way.

In the coming years, Microsoft has the opportunity to reach even more people and organizations around the world. Technology is still out of reach for many people, because it is complex or expensive, or they __48__ do not have access. So I hope you will think about what you can do to make the power of technology accessible to everyone, to connect people to each other, and make personal computing __49__ everywhere even as the very intention of what a PC delivers makes its way into all devices.

We have accomplished a lot together during our first 40 years and enable countless businesses and people to realize their full __50__. But what matters most now is what we do next. Thank you for helping make Microsoft a fantastic company now and for decades to come.

III. Reading Comprehension

Section A

Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

Better Solar Energy Systems: More Heat, More Light

Solar photovoltaic thermal energy systems(太阳能光伏热能系统), or PVTs, produce both heat and electric ity, but until now they haven’t been very good at the heat-producing part __51__ a stand-alone (单机的) solar thermal collector. That’s because they operate at low temperatures to cool crystalline silicon solar cell s (晶体硅太阳能电池), which lets the silicon produce more electricity but isn’t a very __52__ way to gather heat.

That’s a problem of economics. A solar-electric system is run at a comparatively lower __53__, while good solar hot-water systems can harvest much more energy. And it’s also a space

problem: photovoltaic (光伏的) cells can __54__ all the space on the roof, leaving little room for thermal applications.

In a pair of studies, Joshua Pearce, an associate professor of materials science and engineering, has designed a __55__ in the form of a better PVT made with a different kind of silicon. His research partners are Kunal Girotra from Thin Silicon in California and Michael Pathak and Stephen Harrison from Queen’s University, Canada.

Most solar panels (电池板) are made with crystalline silicon, but you can also make solar cells out of amorphous silicon (非晶体硅), __56__ known as thin-film silicon. They don’t create as much electricity, but they are lighter, flexible, and cheaper. Because they __57__ much less silicon, they are more environmental friendly and have a greener footprint. __58__, thin-film silicon solar cells can be easily damaged and are breakable.

“That means that, when you expose them to light, their efficiency __59__ ---- pretty much the worst possible effect for a solar cell,” Pearce explains, which is o ne of the reasons thin-film solar panels make up only a small __60__ of the market.

However, Pearce and his team eventually found a way to improve the __61__ of solar panels by uniting thin-film silicon into a whole in a new type of PVT after many experiments. You don’t have to cool down thin-film silicon to make it work and improve its working efficiency. __62__, Pearce’s group discovered that by heating it to solar-thermal operating __63__, near the boiling point of water, they could make thicker cells that largely overcame the __64__ effect. When they applied the thin-film silicon directly to a solar thermal energy collector, they also found that by baking the solar cell once a day, they __65__ the solar cell’s electrical efficiency by over 10 percent.

Tea drinking was common in China for nearly one thousand years before anyone in Europe

had ever heard about tea. People in Britain were much slower in finding out what tea was like, mainly because tea was very expensive. It could not be bought in shops and even those people who could afford to have it sent from Holland did so only because it was a fashionable curiosity. Some of them were not sure how to use it. They thought it was a vegetable and tried cooking the leaves. Then they served them mixed with butter and salt. They soon discovered their mistake but many people used to spread the used tea leaves on bread and give them to their children as sandwiches.

Tea remained scarce and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the seventeenth century. During the next few years so much tea came into the country that the price fell and many people could afford to buy it.

At the same time people on the Continent were becoming more and more fond of tea. Until then tea had been drunk without milk in it, but one day a famous French lady named Madame de Sevigne decided to see what tea tasted like when milk was added. She found it so pleasant that she would never again drink it without milk. Because she was such a great lady her friends thought they must copy everything she did, so they also drank their tea with milk in it. Slowly this habit spread until it reached England and today only very few British people drink tea without milk.

At first, tea was usually drunk after dinner in the evening. No one ever thought of drinking tea in the afternoon until a duchess (公爵夫人)found that a cup of tea and a piece of cake at three or four o’cl ock stopped her getting “a sinking feeling” as she called it. She invited her friends to have this new meal with her and so, tea-time was born.

66. Which of the following is true of the introduction of tea into Britain?

68. People in Europe began to drink tea with milk because ______.

A. tea with milk stopped people getting a sinking feeling

B. people followed the way a French lady drank tea

C. tea with milk was then a fashionable curiosity

It’s true that high-school coding classes aren’t essential for learning computer science in college. Students without experience can catch up after a few introductory courses, said Tom Cortina, the assistant dean at Carnegie Mellon’s Schoo l of Computer Science.

However, Cortina said, early exposure is beneficial. When younger kids learn computer science, they learn that it’s not just a confusing, endless string of letters and numbers — but a tool to build apps, or create artwork, or test hypotheses (假设). It’s not as hard for them to transform their thought processes as it is for older students. Breaking down problems into bite-sized parts and using code to solve them becomes normal. Giving more children this training could increase the number of people interested in the field and help fill the jobs gap, Cortina said.

Students also benefit from learning something about coding before they get to college, where introductory computer-science classes are packed to the edge, which can drive the less-experienced or less-determined students away.

The Flatiron School, where people pay to learn programming, started as one of the many coding camps has become popular for adults looking for a career change. The high-schoolers get the same curriculum, but “we try to adjust lessons to things they’re interested in,” said Victoria Friedman, an instructor. For instance, one of the apps the students are developing suggests movies based on your mood.

The students in the Flatiron class probably won’t drop out of high school and build the next Facebook.

Programming languages have a quick turnover, so the “Ruby on Rails” language they learned may not even be relevant by the time they enter the job market. But the skills they learn — how to think logically through a problem and organize the results — apply to any coding language, said Deborah Seehorn, an education consultant for the state of North Carolina.

Indeed, the Flatiron students might not go into IT at all. But creating a future army of coders is not the only purpose of the classes. These kids are going to be surrounded by computers — in their pockets, in their offices, in their homes — for the rest of their lives. The younger they learn how computers think, how to coax the machine into producing what they want — the earlier they learn that they have the power to do that — the better.

74. Cortina holds that early exposure to computer science makes it easier to ______.

A. remodel the way of thinking

B. perfect artwork production

C. formulate logical hypotheses

D. complete future job training

75. Deborah Seehorn believes that the skills learned at Flatiron will ______.

A. have to be upgraded when new technologies come

B. need improving when students look for jobs

C. help students learn other computer languages

D. enable students to make big quick money

76. According to the last paragraph, Flatiron students are expected to ______.

A. stay longer in the information technology industry

B. become better prepared for the digitalized world

C. bring forth innovative computer technologies

D. compete with a future army of programmers

77. The word “coax” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.

A. misguide

B. challenge

C. frighten

D. persuade

Section C

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.

Some futurologists have assumed that the vast increase of women in the workforce may signal a rejection of marriage. Many women, according to this hypothesis(假设), would rather work than marry. The opposite of this concern is that the outlook of becoming a multi-paycheck household could encourage marriage. In the past, only the earnings and financial prospects of the man counted in the marriage decision. Now, however, the earning ability of a woman can make her more attractive as a marriage partner. Data show that economic downturns tend to put off marriage because the parties cannot afford to establish a family or are concerned about rainy days ahead. As the economy comes to life, the number of marriages also rises.

The increase in divorce rates follows to the increase in women working outside the home. Yet, it may be wrong to jump to any simple cause-and-effect conclusion. The effect of a wife’s work on divorce is no less cloudy than its effect on marriage decisions. The realization that she can be a good provider may increase the chances that a working wife will choose divorce over an unsatisfactory marriage. But the reverse is equally plausible (似是而非的). Tensions grounded in financial problems often play a key role in ending a marriage. By raising a family’s standard of living, a working wife may strengthen her family’s financial and emotional stability.

Psychological factors also should be considered. For example, a wife blocked from a career outside the home may feel caged in the house. She may view her only choice as seeking a divorce. On the other hand, if she can find fulfillment through work outside the home, work and marriage can go together to create a stronger and more stable union.

Also, a major part of women’s inequality in marriage has been due to the fact that, in most cases, men have remained the main breadwinners. A working wife may rob a husband of being the master of the house. Depending upon how the couple reacts to these new conditions, it could create a stronger equal partnership or it could create new insecurities.

(Note: Answer the question or complete the statement in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)

78. According to the first paragraph, what do fewer people get married for when the economy

declines?

79. A wife may strengthen her family’s stability by working to _______________.

80. Psychologically speaking, whether _______________ will have a strong effect on the

marriage.

81. What problem may a multi-paycheck household have?

W: I believe several have applied for the job but nothing has been decided yet.

Q: What are the two speakers talking about?

Section B

Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages, and you will be asked three questions on each of the passages. The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

Here’s the news. A man will appear in the city court this morning charged with firing a gun. Near the center of the town last night, a team of armed police was called out at 8:30 p.m. after a motorcyclist reported a man had fired at him with a gun and the bullet glanced off his crash helmet while he was riding along Palm Street. An hour later a car driver was stopped by a man and asked for money on North Street. The robbery was unsuccessful and the driver escaped unhurt. After receiving further information around 10:30 p.m., the team of armed police surrounded a house on Main Street where a 30-year-old man was arrested. No one was injured in either of the incidents, nor during the arrest of this man.

(Now listen again.)

Questions:

11. What will the man be charged with?

12. Which of the following is true according to the news?

13. When was the man arrested?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.

Supermarkets are big stores that provide a wide choice of foods and other products. In the United States, traditional supermarkets are facing competition from even bigger stores. They are also facing competition from stores with more choices of fresh, natural foods.

Many supermarkets are chains, stores owned by one company. Price competition is fierce in the grocery industry. Most Americans still spend the most money at supermarkets. But traditional supermarkets have lost some of their business. Many people are changing where they buy groceries. They are also changing the kinds of groceries they want.

New competitors are winning business because they are even larger than supermarkets. And they have lower prices. Wal-Mart Supercenters sell groceries as well as clothes, tools, electronic equipment and everything else. Costco membership stores are also known for low prices. Discount stores like Wal-Mart and Costco buy their goods in huge amounts and sell at prices that supermarkets usually cannot equal.

Competition has also come from stores, like Whole Foods Market, that sell natural foods.

Yet supermarkets are changing too. Many have cut prices. And many are offering more fine foods and organic products which are free of added chemicals or drugs. Since two thousand, Americans have bought more organic food from supermarkets than from any other kind of store. Also, supermarkets are able to offer greater choices of similar products than might be found at their discount competitors.

(Now listen again.)

Questions:

14. Which of the following are the strongest competitors of supermarkets?

15. Which statement is not true according to the passage?

16. What does the passage mainly tell us?

Section C

Directions: In Section C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversations will be read twice. After you hear each conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with the information you have heard. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.

Complete the form. Write ONE WORD for each answer.

W: Good morning! Marketing Department.

M: Hello, I don’t suppose Patt’s there, is she?

W: No, I’m afraid she is in a meeting.

M: Yes, I thought she might be. She is always in a meeting. Um, I wonder if I could leave a message for her?

W: Certainly.

M: This is Dave Mahler, that’s M-A-H-L-E-R.

W: Oh, yes. And what’s the message?

M: Well, I’ve arranged to have a game of tennis with her on Saturday, but I’m afraid I won’t be able to make it.

W: Oh, she’ll be disappointed. She’s been looking forward to playing with you.

M: Is she? Oh, dear. Well, I’m afraid I’ll have to leave for Europe on Friday.

W: Oh, that sounds exciting. Is it a holiday?

M: No, I’m afraid not. I’ve been asked to go to a conference. Can you tell Patt I’ll call her when I get back?

W: Sure.

(Now listen again.)

Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation.

Complete the form. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

W: I enjoy going throu gh secondhand bookstores. It’s interesting to see what people used to enjoy reading. Did you see this old book of children’s stories?

M: Some of these books aren’t so old, though. See? This mystery was published only six years ago.

It costs seventy-five ce nts. You can’t beat that!

W: Hey! Look at this!

M: What? Are you getting interested in poetry books all of a sudden?

W: No. Look at the inscription! Someone gave this book as a present, and wrote a note on the inside of the front cover. It was dated 1893. Maybe it’s worth something.

M: Everything on this shelf is worth fifty cents.

W: But if this is a signature of someone who is well known, it might bring a lot more. I hear William Shakespeare’s signature is worth about a million dollars.

M: Oh, I can hardly read what one says. Who wrote it?

W: The name looks like “Harold Dobson”. Maybe “Dobbins”? Wasn’t he a politician or something?

I’m going to buy this book and see if I can find a name like that in the library.

M: Good luck! Your poetry book may make you rich, but I’ll bet my seventy-five-cent mystery is

a better buy.

(Now listen again.)

But I also want you to understand that realizing your dreams comes from hard work, some good luck and good timing. Here are some words of wisdom for you as you make your way in the world, from an entrepreneur (企业家) and from your mama. 1. Be open-minded to changing your path along the way In high school, I wanted to be a politician. I left my hometown and went off to college in Washington,DC. There, I discovered that I loved to support women. It taught me that I’m creative, a strong leader and great at marketing. As a result, I moved on to be the head of a national health-care nonprofit. Becoming a mother while in that job opened my mind to launching a breast pump bag (储奶袋) business. Now I run a highly successful company that I started up on my own. I'm not a politician! 2. Failure is critical to your success Failure can be heartbreaking. But I will tell you that every failure I’ve had along the way has absolutely made me better. Failing the big math exam in high school and going to summer school was embarrassing. I eventually passed, and I’ve never failed an exam again. I learned from that experience to ask for help. Now, I ask for help in business all the time. I’m proud to be a role model to you as a mom and an entrepreneur. I hope I inspire you to believe that you can be anything you want. It will be my pleasure to watch your lives unfold before my eyes. Love, Your mom 21. In the writer’s opinion, what does it take to realize one’s dream? A. Failure, hard work and good timing. B. Failure can make us embarrassed.

河北省石家庄实验中学2019-2020学年高一3月月考英语试题 Word版缺答案

石家庄实验中学高一英语月考试卷 命题人:高一英语组 阅读理解(每小题2.5分,共25分) A I had a great time this past summer visiting Stone Mountain Park with my twin grandsons. I had the opportunity to spend the day with them seeing the various sights and attractions. One thing that my grandsons had really wanted to do that particular day was to climb to the top of the mountain. Stone Mountain isn't a particularly tall mountain and fortunately has walking trails to the top, but for two 5-year-olds, along with Grandpa, it's a formidable task. Since my grandsons' enthusiasm was much greater than mine, I decided to start the slow walk up the mountain. The beginning part of the trail was slow and gradual. It seemed like we were taking forever to climb just a short distance, but I had to remind myself that it took 3 of their steps to equal1 of mine, so I found myself walking ahead of them, then having to stop and let them catch up, over and over again. I was tired and sweaty, just wanting to get to the top of the mountain so I could rest well before starting my way back. I learned early during our walk that this wasn't going to be the case. We had to stop and look at every large rock with someone’s name carved in it. We looked at unusual plant formations. We examined large trees and we explored small rock overhangs that reminded the kids of caves. My grandsons viewed the walk as an exciting adventure. Climbing the mountain was a trial to me but my grandsons were not focused at all on the trial of climbing the mountain; they were simply enjoying the journey of the walk. I know when I face a trial in life, I tend to always think of the problem. I want the trial to be over quickly and let life get back to normal. What can I learn during the course of trial? At some point, the trial will be over and we'll be joyous for sure. However, the real joy should not be that the trial’s over, but I am celebrating what I learned during the journey. 1. What does the underlined word "formidable" in Paragraph 1mean? A. Relaxing. B. Meaningful. C. Strange. D. Difficult. 2. What can we know from Paragraph 2? A. The writer kept challenging his grandsons to catch up with him.
