Researchers say they have created a new super-tough material in the laboratory. It is stronger, lighter and costs less than steel. But the new material

is not a product of high technology. It is wood. Researcher Liangbing Hu says that it can compete with some of the world’s strongest materials or even replace steel.

The product is called Super Wood. It doesn’t require any special raw, unprocessed material. That means the cost of the product will be relatively low.Hu said, “We can start with very cheap wood, and also very fancy, expensive wood. But in the end, we get very similar performance.”

Super Wood is made by partially removing a natural polymer called lignin (木质素). Hu explained, “Lignin is like glue to hold all the parts together in natural wood. To be able to densify(增密)the wood completely, some of the lignin has to be removed. “Strong chemicals are put on the wood to remove about half of its lignin. Then, after being left in extreme heat and pressurized for a day, the treated wood is ready.

The wood is strong enough to build automobiles, airplanes, wind turbines and more. Researchers are finding many new ways to use wood, including creating batteries and see-through wood and paper.Hu said, “Wood has been existing on Earth for more than a million years. And human beings have been using wood for furniture, construction for more than 10 thousand years. And the more we worked on this material, we realized, we have never fully exhausted the potential of this amazing material.”

(1)Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of Super Wood?

A . Strong.

B . Tough.

C . High-tech.

D . Low-cost.

(2)What is the 3rd paragraph mainly about?

A . The quality of Super Wood.

B . The densifying function of lignin.

C . The amount of removed lignin.

D . The making process of Super Wood.

(3)What’s Liangbing Hu’s attitude towards the future of Super Wood?

You may have heard the term self-awareness, but what is it and why does it matter?

Being self-aware can influence how you feel in your job and in your personal life. Daniel Goleman takes that connection much further, saying self-awareness is the key to success. He describes self-awareness as “knowing one’s internal(内在的)states ,preference and resources”, and then monitoring that “inner world” information as it comes up. If you can be as aware of your feelings and thoughts, you’ll be better able t o deal with new situations. Because you know yourself better, you’ll be more accepting of yourself, your thoughts and your feelings, Goleman says.

But self-awareness doesn’t stop at how you see yourself. It’s also understanding and acknowledging how others see you. Tasha Eurich, an organizational psychologist, explains that self-awareness has two parts —internal and external(外部的). Internal self-awareness means we can clearly see our own values, thoughts, passions and feelings. External self-awareness is clearly seeing how others see us. People who are externally self-aware tend to be better leaders.

So how do you know if you’re self-aware or not? Eurich developed a short online quiz to help. You’re not the only one who has to take it. Someone who knows you well also has to answer questions about you.

In a recent TED Talk, Eurich refers to self-awareness unicorns. This group makes up only a small part of all the people she has studied. These are people who not only believe they are self-aware, but other people who know them would agree. Additionally, these unicorns would say they have improved their self-awareness in their lives and again, those who know them well would agree.

Thankfully, anyone can become more self-aware, as long as they’re willing to devote some time and effort to the cause.

(1)According to Daniel Goleman, a self-aware person ________.

A . feels content with his life

B . has a burning desire for success

C . handles his self-information well

D . avoids challenging new situations

(2)In Eurich’s theory, what helps make a better lead er?

A . Clear thinking.

B . Internal self-awareness.

C . Sharp understanding.

D . External self-awareness.

(3)How does Eurich’s quiz assess one’s self-awareness?

A . By setting criteria for answers.

B . By measuring others’ reactions.

C . By analyzing quiz-take rs’ questions.

D . By matching internal and external opinions.

(4)What can be inferred about unicorns from the 5th paragraph?

A . They are rare talents.

B . They fail to get approval.

C . They are born experts.

D . They try to please others.

Something happens to many children when they are out of school over the summer months. It is called the “summer slide.” This may sound like a ride at a water park. But it’s not. Summer slide is wh en children forget much of what they learned during the latest school year.

To fight the effects of summer slide, teachers often give students homework over the summer. Many parents may send children to all kinds of camps or find other activities to keep them learning. Some even try to build up their children’s strengths by getting them into extra tutoring.

However, experts say keeping children busy all the time is not good for them. The result is often a tired child with an overcrowded schedule. This keeps a child’s brain active constantly—learning, gathering information and

preparing for the next event. And this may have the opposite effect the parents are not hoping for.

What should parents do instead? Nothing. According to Lea Waters, a psychologist specializing in positive psychology and positive education, slowing down actually helps children become the best they can be. Machines need to be reset, while kids need to goof off(偷懒). She says that goofing off really allows kids to have some downtime, whe n they’re not focused on a specific task but are free to do something that they’re interested in doing and that they can do more automatically and get enjoyment from, like shooting baskets or listening to the music.

She also adds that goofing off does not mean the brain isn’t working. It just goes into this default network mode(默认网络模式)and uses that time to process all the information it had during the day, to integrate(整合)new information. It makes a kind of decision about what information to put into memory and what to get rid of, which in fact helps to improve memory.
