Passage One

The advantages and disadvantages of a large population have long been a subject of discussion among economists. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worked intensively. Thus, each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population. Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them.

One of the difficulties in carrying out a worldwide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials. In a developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources, it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate, whatever the consequences may be. In a highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex. A decreasing birthrate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened. Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline.

31.A large population may mean _________.

A higher productivity, but a lower average income

B lower productivity, but a higher average income

C higher productivity and a higher average income

D lower productivity and a lower average income

32.A large population may offer more scope for the development of _________.

A economy

B transportation

C extensive cultivation

D agriculture

33.In highly industrialized countries, unemployment may result from _________.

A a decreasing birthrate

B an increasing birthrate

C a stable birthrate

D a birth control program

34.What may the government of a developed country prefer?

A A rapidly increasing population.

B A rapidly decreasing population.

C A slowly increasing population.

D A slowly decreasing population.

35.Why is it difficult to carry out a worldwide birth control program?

A Because it will do harm to the national economy in most countries.

B Because it will lead to complex social problems in developing countries.

C Because people are unwilling to practice birth control.

D Because different governments have different opinions.

Passage Two

After the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had good news to report: The damage and death toll could have been much worse.

More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity that shook America in 1988 claimed 25,000 victims.

Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the earthquake occurred at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city’s highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city’s buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes.

Despite the good news, civil engineers aren’t resting on their success. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints for improved quake-resistant buildings. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place.

In the past, making structures quake-resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel, and wood, that bend without breaking. Later people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact of ground vibrations. The most recent designs give buildings brain as well as concrete(混凝土) and steel supports. Called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms(生物体) to an earthquake’s vibrations. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building to shift in the opposite direction.

The new smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.

36.One reason why the loss in the Los Angeles earthquake was relatively low is that

_____________.

A the earthquake was forecasted early

B most people in Los Angeles had left the city

C it took place in the early morning

D the earthquake was much less intense

37. What does the phrase “resting on their success” in paragraph 4 mea n?

A Having a vacation after achieving the success.

B Being satisfied with their success and doing nothing more.

C Being unaware of the success achieved.

D Being responsible for the success.

38.The smart building mentioned in the passage would _______________.

A be treated like living organisms

B no longer need steel, wood or rubber

C balance itself in an earthquake

D reduce the ground vibrations caused by the earthquake

39.It can be inferred from the passage that to make the loss minimal we should

____________.

A build smart buildings

B lift the building off its foundation

C use more firm yet flexible materials

D reduce the impact of ground vibrations

40.The purpose of this passage is to ______________.

A compare different quake-resistant building materials

B inform people of the damages caused by earthquakes

C advocate the extensive use of computers in construction

D report the new progress in designing quake-resistant buildings

Passage Three

It was small town. The sun was high in the sky. The streets were dusty. The young man on the wagon looked around. It was hot and he was thirsty. He stopped the wagon in front of the bank. Two men were sitting on the steps outside.

“Hi,” said the young man.

“Hi.”

“Can I get a cold beer anywhere in the town?”

“The saloon is up the street on the left.”

“Thanks.”

“Just a minute, stranger.”

One of the men stood up. He was tall man with a new black hat, but his clothes were very old, a big hole in the back of his trousers and patches on the knees. On his right hip, there was a shiny silver gun. He walked over to the wagon.

“What have you got in here?”

“Canvas.” Said the young man.

“Canvas? What for?”

“For tents. Or wagon covers.”

“Yeah? Well, we’ve got a lot of tents here. We don’t need any tents.”

The second man got up from the steps. He was smiling. Looking at the tall man with the silver gun, he said, “You’re right, Hank. You don’t need a tent.” He pointed at the hole in the tall man’s trousers. “You need a new pair of pants!” he slapped his friend on the back and laughed. The tall man put one hand over the hole in his trousers and the other hand on his gun. He looked angry. Then he smiled. Then he began to laugh. The young man laughed, too. He was Levi Strauss.

Levi jumped down from the wagon and walked over to the saloon for a beer. During his

beer slowly, he began to think. He thought about his brothers in New York and he thought about the canvas on his wagon. Business was not good and nobody wanted to buy anything. He sat with his head in his hands. Then he remembered the hole in the tall man's trousers. Suddenly, an idea occurred to him. He jumped up and shouted, "Pants! That's it! I've got it!" He ran into the street and threw his hat into the air. "Everyone needs pants!"

Levi was right. He did not know it then, but it was the most important idea of his life. He hurried back to San Francisco and gave a tailor all his canvas.

"I want you to make pants with this canvas." he said. "Can you do that?"

"Yes, of course," said the tailor. "What name is it?"

"Strauss. Levi Strauss."

It was the beginning of jeans. Now, more than a hundred years later, people wear jeans all over the world, and everyone knows the name of Levi Strauss.

Part II Reading Comprehension (40%) Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. The United States court system, as part of the federal system of government, is characterized by dual hierarchies(双重等级): there are both state and federal courts. Each state has its own system of courts, composed of civil and criminal trial courts, sometimes intermediate courts of appeal(上诉), and a state supreme court. The federal court system consists of a series of trial courts (called district courts) serving relatively small geographic regions (there is at least one for every state), a tier of circuit courts of appeal that hear appeals from many district courts in a particular geographic region, and the Supreme Court of the United States. The two court systems are to some extent overlapping(重叠), in that certain kinds of disputes (such as a claim that a state law is in violation of the constitution) may be initiated in either system. They are also to some extent hierarchical, for the federal system stands above the state system in that litigants (persons engaged in lawsuits) who lose their cases in the state supreme court may appeal their cases to the Supreme Court of the United States. Thus, the typical court case begins in a trial court--a court of general jurisdiction(审判权)-- in the state or federal system. Most cases go no further than the trial court: for example, the criminal defendant is convicted (by a trial or a guilty plea) and sentenced by the court and the case ends; the personal injury suit results in a judgment by a trial court (or an out-of-court settlement by the parties which the courts suit is pending) and the parties leave the court system. But sometimes the losing party at the trial court cares enough about the cause may appeal to the next higher court 26. What does the passage mainly discuss? A) Civil and criminal trial courts. B) Trial court cases. C) The court system in the United States. D) The appeal court process. 27. According to the passage district courts are known as ________. A) circuit courts B) supreme courts C) intermediate courts D) trial courts 28. In the last sentence of the first paragraph, the phrase "engaged in" could best be replaced ________. A) committed to B) involved in C) attentive to D) engrossed in 29. The passage indicates that litigants who lost their cases in the state trial court may take them to a ________. A) different trial court in the same state B) court in a different geographic region C) federal trial court D) state supreme court 30. It can be inferred from the passage that typical court cases are ________.
