“Yes, I?ll be ready at nine in the morning. Goodbye, dear, and thanks again. ”It had not been an easy telephone call for Mrs. Robson to make. Her daughter had been very kind, of course, and had immediately agreed to pick her up and drive her to the station, but Mrs. Robson hated to admit that she needed help. Since her husband had died ten years before, she had prided herself on her independence. She had continued to live in their little house, alone.

On this evening, however, she was standing at the living-room window, staring out at the SOLD notice in the small front garden. Her feelings were mixed. Of course, she was sad at the thought of leaving the house, as it was full of so many memories. But at the same time she was looking forward to spending her last years near the sea, back in the little seaside town where she had been born. With the money from the sale of the house, she had bought a little flat there. She turned from the living room window, and looked round at the room. One or two pieces of furniture remained, covered with sheets. All her pictures had been taken from the walls. There was a small fish tank(鱼缸), with two goldfish in it. When asked why, her husband used to say: “It?s nice to have something alive in the room. ”Since he had passed away, she had always kept some goldfish, had always had “so mething alive in the room. ”

The next morning, as her train was pulling out of the station, Mrs. Robson called to her daughter, “Kate, you won?t forget to collect the goldfish, will you? The children will love them. It?s …”

“I know, ”Kate interrupted gently. “It?s nice to have something alive in the room. ”But in the little house, the two goldfish had stopped their circling. They were floating on the water, in the room with silent walls.

A letter to Edward, a columnist(报刊专栏作家)

Dear Mr Expert:

I grew up in an unhappy and abusive(挨骂的)home. I always promis ed myself that I?d get out as soon as possible. Now, at age 20,I have a good job and a nice house, and I?m really proud of the independence I?ve achieved.

Here?s the problem: several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mine — so much so that they make mine theirs.

It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me. But now they seem to take it for granted that they can show up any time they like. They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stay out forever.

I enjoy having my friends here sometimes—it makes the place feel comfortable and warm—but this is my home, not a party house. I was old enough to move out on my own, so why can’t I seem to ask my friends to respect my privacy(隐私)?

Joan

Edward?s reply to Joan

Dear Joan:

If your family didn?t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now.

And if you?ve gathered your friends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere(气氛),you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict you grew up with—or destroy the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true frien dship it?s okay to put your own needs first from time to time.

Maria sat by the glass door that faced the side yard. The door hadn?t been opened as long as she had lived there. The dirty yard outside was overgrown with weeds (杂草). Maria liked to look at the weeds. Small flowers would grow, followed by seed balls. And the seed carriers would fly away.

The late afternoon sunlight died into night. Turning on the light, Maria picked up her colored pencils and notepaper. She worked on a picture of a clearing in a forest.

"Maria!" called her father, who knew where to find her. "I?m back!" He had been working at the apartments next door.

"Did you fix their broken blender, Papa?" She asked, and he said, "Yes." He pushed his daughter?s wheelchair into the kitchen so that she could help him prepare dinner. Maria cut up the vegetables that Papa had grown in the small yard behind the house. She loved their bright colors, their strange shapes, and their fresh, crispy taste before being cooked. She would have loved to garden herself, but it was hard for her to sit on the ground and work.

As they ate and talked about their day, Papa told Maria that his brother, Ramon, would be coming over the next day to help him with a special project. Papa had asked Mr. Yamato, the bus driver, to take her to Aunt Gabriela? s house after school. Then Papa would pick her up when the project was finished. Maria wondered why she had to be away while he worked. There was something in Papa?s eyes and in his voice, perhaps -that told her not to ask.

When Papa brought her home the next evening, he asked her to close her eyes while he took her to the glass door. She heard him open the curtain. Then he said, "Open your eyes."

Surely she was dreaming! The tall crowd of weeds was gone. In its place was a beautiful garden. There were young trees, flowery bushes, and colorful little flowers. Papa opened the glass door. He wheeled Maria to a path that led to the heart of the little garden. Then she saw the best part. Along the house were raised wooden beds of soil, just waiting to be planted - by her! They were exactly the right height for her to reach from her wheelchair.

"First I?ll dr aw a plan," she said excitedly.

"And then we?ll go to the garden center," said Papa. "You?re a gardener now, Ma ria!"

Accidents are caused; they don?t just happen. The reason may be easy to see: an overl oaded tray, a shelf out of reach, a patch of ice on the road. But more often than not there is a chain of events leading up to the misfortune-frustration, tiredness or just bad temper-that show what the accident really is, a sort of attack on oneself.

Road accidents, for example, happen frequently after a family quarrel, and we all know people who are accident-prone, so often at odds with themselves and the world that they seem to cause accidents for themselves and others.

By definition, an accident is something you cannot predict or avoid, and the idea which used to be current, that the majority of road accidents are caused by a minority of criminally careless drivers, is not supported by insurance statistics. These show that most accidents involve ordinary motorists in a moment of carelessness or thoughtlessness.

It is not always clear, either, what sort of conditions make people more likely to have an accident. For instance, the law requires all factories to take safety actions and most companies have safety committees to make sure the regulations are observed, but still, every day in Britain, some fifty thousand men and women are absent from work due to an accident. These accidents are largely the result of human error or misjudgment-noise and fatigue, boredom or worry are possible factors which contribute to this. Doctors who work in factories have found that those who drink too much, usually people who have a high anxiety level, run three times the normal risk of accidents at work. 71.This passage might be taken from .

A.a text book B.a science story

C.a popular magazine D.a report of a businessman

72.“Accident-prone” here (in Paragraph 2) means .

A.likely to have accidents B.injured in accidents

C.likely to die in accidents D.responsible for road accidents

73.The passage suggests that .

A.accidents mostly result from slippery roads

B.accidents are usually caused by psychological factors

C.doctors run three times the normal risk of accidents in factories

D.about 50,000 people lost their lives at work in Britain every day

74.Which of the following is NOT discussed as a factor of accidents in this passage?

A.Mood B.Carelessness C.Tiredness D.Weather

75.What do you think would be the best title for the passage?

A.Accidents and Anxiety B.How accidents Are Caused

C.Human Factors in Accidents D.How to Prevent Accidents
