The article consists of three stories about pioneers of flight. The first story is about a Chinese named Wan Hu, who made an unsuccessful attempt at spaceflight in He built a spaceship powered by 47 rockets using gunpowder. His idea was crazy, but his dream of flight came true 500 years later when China successfully launched its first manned Shenzhou V spaceship. The second one is about the Spruce Goose, a flying boat designed to meet the need of transporting troops and materials during World War II. It was made entirely of wood and still holds the record for the greatest wingspan. Although it was never put to use, many of its design features have been incorporated into today’s cargo planes. The last is about Leonardo da Vinci, the most famous artist of the Renaissance. Apart from his great artistic work, he also drew sketches of flying devices with flapping wings controlled and steered by human pilots. Five hundred years later, a professional parachutist made a successful jump using a wood and canvas parachute based on one of da Vinci’s designs/sketches.

Long, long ago Greek legend has it that Daedalus, a brilliant inventor, was imprisoned together with his son Icarus on an island in the Mediterranean. In order to escape, Daedalus devised a clever plan and sketched out his idea to his son. They would both fly away from the island like birds. It was risky, but both thought it worth

a try. Using feathers attached together with wax and string, Daedalus

made them both a pair of wonderful wings. Harnessed to these they were able to take to the air, leaving those on the ground who witnessed their

flight amazed at their strange device. As they flew off over the sea their escape seemed certain. But Icarus, ignoring the warnings of his father, came too close to the sun. The wax holding his wings together melted and he plunged to his death in the ocean below.

Integrated Skills Practicing

I. Viewing & Listening

Hughes: I mean, I put my money into the planes, senator. My money. See, the thing is, I care very much about aviation. It has been the great joy of my life. That’s why I put my own money into these planes. And I’ve lost millions, Senator Brewster. And I’ll go on losing millions. It’s just ... what I do. Now, I am supposed to be ... many things which are not complimentary. I am supposed to be capricious.

I have been called a playboy. I have even been called an eccentric, but I do not believe that I have the reputation of being a liar. Now, needless to say, the Hercules was a monumental undertaking. It is the largest plane ever built. It is over five stories tall with a wingspan longer than a football field. That’s more than a city block. Now, I put the sweat of my life into this thing. I got my reputation all rolled up in it. And I have stated several times that if the Hercules fails

to fly, I will leave this country and never come back. And I mean it.

III. Writing

Model paper for your reference

Howard Hughes was an American entrepreneur and an aviation pioneer. During WWII, he entered into a contract with the US government to make planes that would be able to transport troops and materials across the Atlantic Ocean. The prototype he finally produced was nicknamed the Spruce Goose. It was made entirely of wood, and it was the largest airplane ever built. On November 2, 1947, the Spruce Goose made its first and only flight, and after that it was put into storage and then on display for the public. Many think that the Spruce Goose was a failure and a waste of time and money. But if we think of the fact that many of its design features have been incorporated into the modern cargo plane, we will not be so quick to blame Howard Hughes. He was simply ahead of his time. This is at least partly due to what is known as language interference, meaning that the linguistic patterns of our first language interfere with those of the second because no two languages have exactly the same sounds and grammatical structures. The English language has a very large vocabulary because it has incorporated words from many other languages over the centuries. This is nowhere more apparent than in its color words. For example, there are many words that express the color “purple”, describing its different shades and hues: mauve, violet, lilac, or lavender. An interesting 2

Universities Encourage New Students to Go It Alone Sun Xiaochen 1 With an eye to increasing college students’ independence and improving their social skills, Chinese universities are encouraging freshmen to enroll by themselves without their parents’ help. 2 It used to be quite a scene when families accompanied their children to college enrollment in China. 3 Vehicles packed with luggage usually filled campuses, while parents carrying bags would follow their children everywhere to help them handle procedures and get them settled in at dormitories. 4 However, it was a different scene at Tsinghua University on Wednesday, when more than 3,000 freshmen reported to school and finished all the procedures themselves. 5 A yellow line drawn across the entrance of the school arena separated parents from their children, who entered the gym alone with their documentation. The students would spend as much as three hours dealing with the enrollment procedures, including department registration, credential collection and room distribution. 6 Senior schoolmates helped new students transfer their baggage and explore the campus. 7 The move, launched by Tsinghua University last year, is expected to improve young Chinese people’s self-reliance and independent spirit at a crucial stage of life, university President Chen Jining said. 8 “An important goal of higher education is cultivating students’ independent personalities, which should be embodied in every process of campus life,” said Chen, who wrote a brief message with the admission letter that encouraged students to leave their parents behind on enrollment day. 9 “How can youngsters grow up with their parents spoiling them and taking care of everything? We expect to make a difference from the beginning.” 10 The call got a positive response from students. 11 Feng Lei, a student from Gansu province who will study hydraulic engineering, took a 25-hour train ride to Beijing with only one schoolmate. 12 “It’s my first long trip without my parents, and I am actually quite excited about it,” he said. “Coming to the university opens a new stage of my life, and 1
