（A）

When Einstein arrived in New York to become Professor at Princeton University, Einstein was anxious to avoid visitors and news reporters, so his friends took him off the ship secretly before it docked and hurried him away by car.

Einstein said that there were only twelve people living at that time who understood his Theory of Relativity, although more than nine hundred books had been written to explain it. Mrs Einstein admitted that even she didn't understand the Theory of Relativity; but she understood something that was far more important for a wife, she understood her husband.

She used to invite her friends in for tea and then she would ask the professor to come downstairs and join them. "No!" he would say with anger. "No! I won't! I won't! I'm going away from here. I can't work here. I simply can't stand these interruptions any longer."

Mrs Einstein would keep perfectly quiet until he had blown off steam for a while; then, presently, by using a little diplomacy, she would have him downstairs drinking tea and having a rest. Mrs Einstein said that her husband liked order in his thinking, but he did not like it in his living. He did whatever he wanted to, whenever he wanted to. And he had only two rules of conduct. The first one was: "Don't have any rules whatever." And the second one was: "Be independent of the opinions of others."

He led a very simple life, went around in old clothes, seldom wore a hat, and whistled and sang in the bathroom. He shaved while sitting in the bathtub and he didn't use shaving soap. He shaved with the same soap that he used for his hands. He said that using two kinds of soap made life entirely too complicated.

He said he was happy because he didn't want anything from anybody. He didn't want money or titles or fool praises. He made his own happiness out of such simple things as his work, playing the violin and sailing his boat. Einstein's violin brought him more than anything -else in life. He said he often thought in music and lived his daydreams in music.

At one time Einstein travelled all over the United States giving lectures. He travelled by car and soon became quite friendly with the driver.

The driver always listened to Einstein's lecture, which the great scientist gave again and again. One day he told Einstein that he knew the lecture so well that he was sure he could give it himself. Einstein smiled and said, "Why don't you give the lecture for me next time?" the driver agreed.

That evening both of them went along to the lecture hall. Nobodu there had seen Einstein before. As the driver took his place on the stage everybody clapped. Then he began the lecture. Sure enough he didn't make a single mistake. It was a great success, and when it was over, people clapped and clapped. Then he started to leave, shaking hands with everyone, while Einstein followed quietly a few steps behind.

Just before they got to the door, a man stopped them and asked the driver a very difficult question. The driver listened carefully. Of course, he did not understand a thing, but he nodded as if he did. When the man stopped talking, the driver said that he thought the question was very interesting, but really quite simple, in fact, in order to show how simple it really was, he would ask his driver to answer it.
