On a Friday night, a poor young artist stood at the gate of the New York railway station, playing his violin. The music was so great that many people stopped to put some money into the hat of the young man.

The next day, the young artist came to the same place, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. Different from the day before, he took out a large piece of paper and laid it under his hat. Then he began to play the violin. It sounded more pleasant than ever.

Soon he was surrounded with people who were attracted by the words on that paper. It said, “Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim(认领)it soon.”

After about half an hour, a middle-aged man rushed through the crowd to the violinist and said, “Yes, it’s you. I knew that you were an honest man and would certainly come here.” The young violinist asked calmly, “Are you Mr. George Sang?” The man nodded. The violinist asked, “Did you lose something?” “It’s a lottery ticket(彩票),” said the man. The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang’s name was seen. “Is it?” he asked. George nodded and took the lottery ticket and kissed it, then danced with the violinist.

The violinist was a student at an arts college and had planned to attend advanced studies in Vienna. Later his classmate asked the violinist, “At that time you needed money to pay the tuition (学费)and you had to play the vi olin in the railway station every day to make money. Why didn’t you keep the lottery ticket for yourself?” The violinist said, “Although I don’t have much money, I live happily. But if I lose honesty I won’t be happy forever.”

Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should always be with us.

A recent documentary produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has caused a stir in China and in the U.

The documentary, titled Are Our ids Tough Enough? focuses on five Chinese teachers who are sent to teach 50 U teens at a school in Hampshire.

The teachers instruct the students for a month. The pupils are then tested, and the results are compared to the ones of those who have continued in the regular U education system. The idea is to see if the Chinese method improves academic performance.

The Chinese teachers use their own teaching methods but receive strong resistance from the students. A clip from the documentary online shows some problems, with Chinese teachers calling their students lazy and lacking in discipline, while the students say the high pressure and harsh teachers are driving them crazy.

This has aroused a new debate in both China and the U, with some arguing the teenagers need more regulation and discipline. Others say Chinese methods encourage rote learning(死记硬背) instead of independent thinking. For instance, Chinese language teachers should do more than pass on knowledge about words and characters. They should inspire students, helping them feel the sentiment from Chinese literature. This is a higher level of teaching.

Yang Dongping, dean of the 21st Century Education Research Institute, says, “The Chinese teaching methods are designed to strictly train the majority. Foreign teaching methods, however, are more natural and relaxing, and designed to inspire students’ interest in learning. Education methods are based on culture. That is why a successful education method in one place may not work that well when simply ‘transplanted’ into a nother place.”

Yang Dongping says, “The documentary does reflect some problems rooted in traditional Chinese teaching methods. Nobel prize winner, Yang henning, gave a very fair comment on this issue. He said the Chinese-style education method works for most ordinary qualified students effectively, helping them reach high standards. However, it may weaken the training for high-potential outstanding students.”

24. Why are five Chinese teachers sent to teach 50 U teens?

A. To test the intelligence of the U teens.

B. To help the school improve their teaching efficiency.

C. To do some practical research into the U education system.

D. To test the effectiveness of Chinese teaching methods.

25. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “harsh” in the fourt h paragraph?

A. Extremely strict

B. Quite friendly

C. Rather cold

D. Very attractive

26. According to Yang Dongping, Chinese teaching methods ______.

A. fit all countries

B. could be improved

C. are the best in the world

D. are not as good as British methods

C

Ashley Power’s mother bought a computer for her when she was eight. When she was thirteen, she was surfing the Internet 56 (regular), but she couldn’t find anywhere for teenagers to meet and talk. One day she thought, “If I had my own website, I’d make 57 a really interesting site for teenagers.”

So, when Ashley was sixteen, she launched her own website, 58 (call) Goosehead. She had no idea 59 big a success it would be, but three years later, the site was the 60__ (successful) teen site in the USA! It was getting 100,000 hits every day.

After a few years, the website closed down. Then Ashley, who lives in Los Angeles, 61__ (ask) to write a book The Goosehead Guide to Life. The book is 62 how to design a website and start a business. “I was so happy. But it was crazy in a lot of ways. I got very stressed. I mean, I was only sixteen —I didn’t even have a car! If you were sixteen and you had your own company, you’d be stressed, too!”

In 63 interview Ashley gave advice to teenagers 64 wanted to start their own business, “Just be strong and have your dreams and work hard at them. And don’t listen when people tell you that you can’t do it, because I heard ‘no’ a lot. Just keep going 65 you’ll make it!”

第四部分写作(共一节,满分25分)

读后续写(满分25分)

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

He met her at a party. She was so young and beautiful; many guys were after her, but nobody paid any attention to him. After the party, he invited her for coffee. She was surprised, but so as not to appear rude, she went along.

As they sat in a nice cafe, he was too nervous to say anything and she felt embarrassed. Suddenly, he asked the waiter, “Could you please give me some salt? I’d like to put it in my coffee.”

They stared at him. He turned red, but when the salt came, he put it in his coffee and drank. Curious, she asked, “Why salt with coffee?” He hesitated for a while before replying in a word-after-wor d way, “When I was a little boy, I lived near the sea. I liked playing on the sea.

I could feel it salty, like salty coffee. Now every time I drink it, I think of my childhood and my hometown. I miss it and my parents, who are still there.”

She was deeply moved. A man who can admit that he’s homesick must love his home and care about his family. He must be responsible. She talked too, about her faraway hometown, her childhood, her family. That was the start to their love story.

They continued to date. She found that he met all her requirements. He was tolerant, kind, warm and careful. Deep down, she felt lucky for accepting his first invitation out of politeness, otherwise she would have missed such a remarkable man. They later dated with each other in almost all the cafes in the city, where she would always take the lead to tell the waiter to get him some salt.

As all the fairy tales go, the princess and prince get married and lead a happy life ever since. And the story would have ended with the husband passing away after 40 years of happy life, nothing special if it were not for the letter the husband left for her before his death.

注意:

1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

2.应使用5个以上短文标有下划线的关键词语;

Text 10

W O, everyone. Today’s presentation is by Nathan. Start when you’re ready, Nathan.

M O. Hello, everyone. Our presentation is called A smaller world and it’s about te chnology and cultural change. The talk focuses on technology that makes the world smaller. First of all, can you imagine life without cars and planes? Before the invention of these means of transport, people could only travel by train or boat, and they cou ldn’t travel very fast. Now, with cars and planes, we can travel farther and faster. Some people even live in one country and work in another because they can fly to work. Before we move onto the next type of technology, it is important to remember that planes and cars do have their disadvantages. They can be dangerous and they cause a lot of pollution, and this also changes the way we live.

O. Second, communications technology, like television and the Internet, certainly makes the world smaller. We stay in our house or office, but we can see news and shows from all around the world. With the Internet, we can write and chat to people all over the world. But nowadays, people spend more time using the technology than they do meeting other people. We’re spending more and more of our time in our houses, talking to strangers in other countries, than we are with our friends and neighbors. My grandmo ther could name all the people in her street, but I don’t even know the names of my neighbors.

W O. Thank you, Nathan, that was great.
