China’s third manned spacecraft lifted off at 9∶10 pm on September 25 to fulfill its most ambitious and risky mission:spacewalk.

Shenzhou Ⅶ,carrying three astronauts Zhai Zhigang,Liu Boming and Jing Haipeng, blasted off (发射) from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu Province, into the sky. By the next day,the astronauts said they felt “physically sound”,to the joy of the scientists on the ground.

In the spaceship, they had a wide choice of dishes:nearly 80.They also took traditional Chinese medicine, made with more than 10 herbs,to treat space motion sickness.

The astronauts orbited the earth for three days. In a special spacesuit, which weighs 120 kilograms and costs about 30 million yuan, Zhai Zhigang was scheduled to walk in space about

343 kilometers above the earth on September 27.

That made China the third country to conduct extra-vehicular (舱外的) activities in space. The other two who have achieved that are the former Soviet Union and the US.

The extra-vehicular activities are essential for China’s long-term goal of building a space station by 2020,and possibly launching a manned mission to the moon.

“At the Beijing Olympics,China proved it was the best in the world at coming in first. Now the country will show it can also be very happy with bronze. Forty-three years after Russian Alexei Leonov spent 12 minutes outside an orbiting spacecraft,China plans to become the third nation after the former Soviet Union and the US to carry out its own spacewalk. The feat (壮举) would be both a technological and public relations triumph,” wrote Time Magazine in the US. 1.What’s the main function of the extra-vehicular activities?

C.To make the whole country aware of the importance of space.

D.It is useful for checking the outside of the spaceship.

2.About the tasks performed by the Shenzhou Ⅶ,all of the following are wrong except________.

Head above Water

TUV ALU,a tiny country in the Pacific Ocean, has asked for help as it will be swallowed up by the sea.

Storms and huge waves are a constant threat and none of Tuvalu’s nine little islands is more than five meters above sea level. Salt water is alread y entering the country’s drinking water supply,as well as damaging plants that produce fruit and vegetables. Without urgent help, the country’s days are numbered.

But Tuvalu is not the first place to face sinking into the sea. Venice,a historic city in Italy best known for its canals, has sunk about 24cm over the past 100 years. Experts say that it will have sunk another 20-50cm by 2050.A century ago,St. Mark’s Square, the lowest point city, flooded about nine times a year. Nowadays,it happens more than 100 times. While Venice is slowly sinking into the mud on which it stands, global warming causes Tuvalu’s rising sea level.

The average global temperature has increased by almost 0.5 degrees centigrade over the past century;scientists expect it to rise by extra 1-3 degrees over the next 100 years.

Warmer weather makes glaciers melt, adding more water to the ocean. The warmer temperatures also make water expand,so it takes up more space, causing the sea level to rise. The

sea level has risen about 10-25 cm in the last 100 years.

The main cause of global warming is human pollution. Through burning coal, oil and gas, people have been increasing the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as CO2.This adds to the power of the greenhouse effect, making the planet even warmer.

Many scientists believe that,if the warming is not stopped, there will be huge climate changes. The sea level could rise by one meter this century.

Should this come true, the sea will swallow up millions of homes and the world will be flooded with “climate refugees” looking for somewhere to live?

1.We can infer from the second paragraph that________.

A.Tuvalu is in danger of being swallowed up by the sea

B.all Tuvalu’s islands are about five meters above the sea level

C

Put yourself in these tourists’ position. You are walking an icy mountain path in the Alps in Europe. Suddenly you spot a body on the ground, face downward and stuck to the ice. You think someone may have been murdered or in a fatal accident. So you rush back and call the police. The police, however, quickly realize that this body is different from others they’ve found on the mountain. For one thing,it is mostly undamaged. For another, its skin is dried out, like a mummy’s. And with it is a knife with a small stone knife.

The body turned out to be much older than the tourists could have guessed. When specialists had a chance to examine it,they discovered it had been there for about five thousand years!

How could a body stay preserved for all this time? Two things probably helped. First, the place where the man died was somewhat sheltered,so animals couldn’t get at it. Then he was

quickly covered by falling snow. Wind blowing through the snow probably “freeze-dried” his body, removing all moisture from it.

Objects found with the body told something about the Iceman’s life. He wore a well-made fur jacket and trousers. He clearly had been hunting, for he carried arrows, and animal bones were nearby. He also had a grass cushion for sitting or sleeping on. Perhaps he was exhausted when he lay down for the last time. The body was found in 1991,when some of the ice on the mountain melted. Searching for the cause of the Iceman’s death, scientists put the body back into cold conditions and hoped...

The way people hold to the belief that a fulfilled, pain free life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever attaining (达到) real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true:more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain.

As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment (承担的义务),self-improvement. Ask a bachelor (单身汉) why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure, excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.

Couples with infant (婴儿) children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a three day vacation. I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.

Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time:Now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money:Buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy:We now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy

at all.

1.According to the author,a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because________.

A.he is unwilling to take on family responsibilities

B.he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains single

C.he finds more fun in dating than in marriage

D.he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement

2.From the last paragraph,we learn that envy sometimes stems from________.

A.hatred B.misunderstanding

C.prejudice D.ignorance

3.To understand what true happiness is,one must________.

A.have as much fun as possible during one’s li fetime

B.make every effort to liberate oneself from pain

C.put up with pain under all circumstances

D.be able to distinguish happiness from fun

4.What is the author trying to tell us?

A.Happiness often goes hand in hand with pain.

B.One must know how to attain happiness.

C.It is important to make commitments.

D.It is pain that leads to happiness.

Can people change their skin colour without suffering like pop king Michael Jackson?Perhaps yes. Scientists have found the gene that determines skin colour.

The gene comes in two versions, one of which is found in 99 per cent of Europeans. The other is found in 93 to 100 per cent of Africans, researchers at Pennsylvania State University report in the latest issue of Science.

Scientists have changed the colour of a dark striped zebra fish to uniform gold by inserting a version of the pigment (色素) gene into a young fish. As with humans, zebra fish skin colour is determined by pigment cells, which contain melanosomes (黑色素).The number, size and darkness of melanosomes per pigment cell determines skin colour.

It appears that, like the golden zebra fish, light skinned Europeans also have a mutation (变异) in the gene for melanosome production. This results in less pigmented skin.

However,Keith Cheng, leader of the research team, points out that the mutation is different in human and zebrafish genes.

Humans acquired dark skin in Africa about 1.5 million years ago to protect bodies from ultra-violet rays of the sun (太阳光紫外线),which can cause skin cancer.

But when modern humans leave Africa to live in northern latitudes, they need more sunlight on their skin to produce vitamin D.So the related gene changes, according to Cheng.

Asians have the same version of the gene as Africans,so they probably acquired their light skin through the action of some other gene that affects skin colour, said Cheng.

The new discovery could lead to medical treatments for skin cancer. It also could lead to research into ways to change skin colour without damaging it like chemical treatment did on Michael Jackson.

1.The passage mainly tells us that________.

A.people cannot change their skin colour without any pain

B.the new discovery could lead to search into ways to change skin colour safely

C.pop king Michael Jackson often changed his skin colour as he liked

D.scien tists have found out that people’s skin colour is determined by the gene

2.It can be inferred from the passage that________.

A.nowadays people who want to change their skin colour have to suffer a lot from the damage

caused by the chemical treatment

B.Europeans and Africans have the same gene

C.the new discovery could help to find medical treatments for skin cancer

D.there are two kinds of genes

3.Scientists have done an experiment on a dark-striped zebra fish in order to________. A.find the different genes of humans’

B.prove the humans’ skin colour is determined by the pigment gene

C.find out the reason why the Africans’ skin colour is dark

D.find out the ways of changing people’s skin colour

4.The reason why Europeans are light skinned is probably that________.

A.they are born light skinned people

B.light skinned Europeans have mutation in the gene for melanosome production C.they have fewer activities outside

D.they always wear many clothes to protect themselves from ultra-violet rays of the sun.

Unit 4 Astronomy:the science of the stars Ⅰ.阅读理解 A How often have you read a story that a friend or family member has sent you?Very likely you would have skipped the news had it not been pointed out to you. Traditionally newspapers and famous TV channels have been our source of authentic news. But these days with the popularity of social media, sharing stories is increasingly becoming a favorite source of news.In fact, research suggests that more than half the people get their news today from social media such as Facebook,Twitter and Google. Social media sites often aggregate contents for us to see based on trending topics—stories that have been viewed by many others as well as based on our own past searches and analysis of our lik es and dislikes. If you have liked kittens in the past, you may have noticed that you are seeing more news, blogs and analysis about kittens all of a sudden. While advocates of free speech do not want to control any voice,it is certainly harmful when it is difficult to separate truth from fiction.Imagine the influence of fake(虚假的) news when it begins to affect our own lives.Trus ting a piece of news, patients could very easily fall for wrong diagnosis; elders could give money to cheats and reputation of perfectly upright citizens could be easily ruined. What about when we research for a school project and base our analysis on false information or news? Mark Zukerberg has finally acknowledged the issue.Among several projects that the company is considering,Facebook is trying to take powerful measures to crack down on false news. This would include warning labels on fake contents.Fake news also makes a lot of profits from advertising.Google and Facebook have said they will limit advertising profits on their network from such sites. The bottom line—don't believe every word of what you read.Do more research from multiple (多样的) sources to ensure that the news is indeed true before you share with others. [语篇解读] 本文为一篇说明文。现在社交媒体充斥着大量虚假信息,这些信息的传播对人们的生活危害很大。为了治理这种现象,一些社交媒体已经采取了一些措施。 1.What does the underlined word “aggregate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A.Analyze. B.Cancel.
