Here's another reason to get off the couch and start working up a sweat.Time the exercise right and you could improve your ability to remember something new. That's the finding of a new study.

But it all comes down to timing. To lock up the new information, start burning those calories roughly four hours after you took in the new information. That's according to researchers at an institute on brain, cognition(认知)and behavior. It's at Radboud University's Medical Center,in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.Eelco van Dongen and his colleagues shared their new findings in the June 16 Current Biology.

This precisely timed memory trick comes from tests with 72 people. Each learned the location of 90 objects on a computer screen.Afterwards, some of the members watched relaxing nature videos.Others worked up a sweat on body-building bikes, changing between hard and easy riding for 35 minutes.Their workouts came either soon after the cram session(考前突击复习)or four hours later.

Two days later they were tested again,Those who remembered the objects' sites best were the people who had waited four hours after their learning before riding.Among those who remembered sites correctly, the four-hour delay before biking also led to more consistent activity in an area important for memory. It's known as the hippocampus(海马区).The consistent activity here suggests that the memories had been strong, the scientists say.

Van Dongen's team does not yet know how exercise works its memo magic. They do,however, have a guess. Aerobic exercise leads to me creation of several important chemicals in the brain. One is a protein known as BDNF. The other is dopamine (DO-puh-meen). It can help convey messages between nerve cells. These two chemicals may help strengthen memories by linking brain cells, the researchers suspect.

21.The best way to lock up the new information is .

A.to get off the couch soon after their learning

B.to do sports for four hours and work up a sweat

C.to see some nature videos on a computer screen

D.to do sports four hours after taking in new information

A.There are 90 objects on the screen.

B.They were tested again two days later.

C.72 people took part in the experiment.

D.They all had to do riding for 35minutes.

23.How does exercise work its memory magic?

A.By the hippocampus.

B.No one knows for sure.

C.A protein known as BDNF.

D.A protein known as dopamine.

For the Swiss, punctuality is a source of deep satisfaction. They obtain real joy from the fact that life unfolds on time and in a highly efficient manner.Whenever I visit Switzerland,I go through several stages of punctuality reaction. At first it delights me,especially if I'm coming from Neighbouring Italy or France with their rather more flexible approach to timekeeping.By contrast, life in Switzerland is enthusiastic and dependable. If someone says they will meet me at 2 pm,they arrive at 2 pm not 2:05 (or 1:55,for that matter). I like this, for a while.

Then it annoys me.The extreme punctuality strikes me as a kind of being mean, and I find myself agreeing with the English writer Evelyn Waugh who said that "punctuality is the virtue of the bored."

That is unfair though, and finally I come to appreciate Swiss punctuality for what it is: a deep expression of respect for other people.A punctual person is a considerate one.By showing up on time for everything,a Swiss person is saying,in effect,"I value your time and,by extension,I value you."

It's no coincidence that the Swiss are the world's watchmakers.Which came first, the precise clocks and watches or the precise people?Hard to say,but the result is the same: a nation where the trains and everything else really do run on time.

How to explain this punctuality? No one knows for sure. But a popular theory is that, historically,it arises from the tough, mountainous area.Either you planted your crops on time and harvested them at the correct time or,well, you starved.

Punctuality, sadly,is a dying art in many parts of the world.Mobile phones are partly to blame. We feel less compelled(紧迫的)to arrive on time if we can always text to say we're running a few minutes late.I don't sense that is happening in Switzerland, though.

Punctuality is not without its weaknesses.Extreme punctuality also creates an expectation, and if that expectation is not met, disappointment follows. On those rare occasions when things do not function smoothly, the Swiss get nervous, confused and angry.

24.What's NOT the author's attitude towards the Swiss punctuality?

A.Pleasant.

B.Exhausted.

C.Annoyed.

D.Appreciated.

25.What do the Swiss people want to show by arriving on time?

A.To show their respect for other people.

B.To show that they have the best watches.

C.To show that they are considerate persons.

D.To show that they are the best watchmakers in the world.

26.The passage is probably taken from a .

A.A history book

B.A business newspaper

C.A cultural guidebook

D.An economic magazine

A contest organised by Airbnb is offering three lucky winners the chance to spend a night in the company of sharks. The winners and their guests will get access to a transparent(透明的)glass bedroom in the 33-foot deep Paris Aquarium where 35 sharks are living.

Interested applicants, who must be 18 years or older and in good health, can apply for the contest through the Airbnb website. "On the 11th,12th,and 13th of April, the Paris Aquarium will open its doors for a night in a room full of sharks," the website states. "And not just any room: you will sleep in a round bed, with a breathtaking view of the world of sharks."

The unusual event will be hosted by a free diver, photographer, and shark enthusiast Fred Buyle, and a biologist will provide the winners with a special course on sharks-their mysterious lives and their role in the ocean's ecosystem, with which the winners can better understand the sharks and thus avoid disturbing their life in the aquarium when they stay there.

Upon arrival, the winners will first be taken to their room for presentations, followed by dinner at the shark tunnel and a night stay among the sharks.A twin bed, soap, toilet paper, and shampoo are all included in the package,as well as breakfast the next morning. The stay is completely free, and so is the travel arrangement to and from Paris.

Applications must also include a message addressed to the judges. In 50 to 500 characters, applicants must explain why they're the perfect candidate for the event. The choices of languages include English, German, Spanish, French,Italian and Portuguese. In case of Chinese,Japanese, and Korean, the word limit is between 50 and 300. Remember that other languages are not allowed.Of course,an Airbnb account is a must requirement for every applicant.

If selected, the winners will be forbidden from diving or swimming in the aquarium, and will be required to keep their hands and feet indoors at all times.Photographing is not allowed because sharks are sensitive to light. Besides, the organisers advise against watching movies like Jaws before checking in.

27.What will the three winners of the contest be allowed to do?

A.Swim along with some sharks.

B.Play with sharks for two days.

C.View how sharks sleep at night.

D.Sleep in a room surrounded by sharks.

28.What's the purpose of the special course in Paragraph 3?

A.To help the winners develop an interest in sharks.

B.To guide the winners how to live in the aquarium.

C.To tell the winners about the ecosystem in the ocean.

D.To help the winners learn how not to disturb the sharks.

29.When people apply for the contest, they don't need to .

A.open an account on the Airbnb website

B.apply for the contest through the Airbnb website

Four Essential Tips For You To Ease Homesickness

When home is far away, the sense of ease and belonging that so many people feel can transform into painful feelings of longing, commonly known as homesickness,Along with feelings of insecurity, loss of control and nervousness, physical effects, including sleep issues, tiredness and loss of appetite, are also caused by homesickness. 31Check them out below:

●Realize that feeling homesick is 100 percent normal.

Almost everyone experiences homesickness when moving to a new place-some people might just be better at hiding it. 32 Homesickness is a normal and evolutionarily healthy reaction.

●Make connections with new people in comfortable settings.

Feeling homesick when separated from loved ones motivates people to want to be with those supportive people. 33 When making new connections,it's best to stick to the style that works for you in order to ease homesickness.

● 34

This point is vital and also one of the hardest to accomplish.Self-compassion is loving yourself just as you love the ones you care about. The most important step in practicing self-compassion is substituting negative, critical and, sometimes, automatic thoughts about yourself with thoughts that are more supportive and kind.

●Keep tabs on your negativity.

It's also useful to ask yourself how much of your homesickness is due to an event, such as being separated from loved ones, and how much is from how you're understanding a situation. 35 A positive outlook on a situation can do wonders for your mood, but it often can be hard to practice. You can silence negative thoughts in many ways, including reciting positive mantras(祷文),keeping a journal or even taking a walk in a park.

If you're dealing with feelings of homesickness, remember you're not alone.Even though there's no place like home, give yourself some time and care, you might find yourself falling in love with a new place.

A.Learn to help others.

B.Practice self-compassion.

C.Being homesick is unnormal.

D.Being homesick is not a sign of personal shortcoming.

E.We gathered a few psychologist-backed tips to help ease homesickness.

F.Taking a step back is recommended, instead of falling into the trap of a negative outlook.

G.But keep in mind that everyone is different when it comes to forming those new relationships.

This year marked my five-year violin anniversary.Five years ago I entered a music shop and asked, "Do you 36 violin lessons?" I was standing in a room filled with beautiful 37 and felt like a stranger in a new land.I had little 38 in playing the violin although I had loved violin music for years.I wanted to learn to play it at that moment.

The music shop signed me up for 39 and it soon became clear to me how 40 it was for a novice(新手)to learn to play the violin.I once watched a skilled violinist play and it looked simple.Actually,it was more difficult than I had expected.Little did I know there was nothing natural about the 41 in which one held the instrument. There was no margin(偏差)for error—a 42 misplaced finger sends a note out of tune.If I had known how challenging it would be, I might never have started. However,my love for violin music 43 all the difficulties.Though it was a big challenge,I made it at last.I won first place in the violin contest in our city last year.

44 the past five years with my violin,I realized I've learned much more than how to make music.I believe mistakes are not 45 .They are pointing you toward where to 46 your attention.Besides, you'd better not 47 yourself with others. If you find you're not as good as someone, you will feel depressed. If so,remember 48 you started. For me, it was because I loved the violin music and it made me happy. What's more, remember that developing a new skill 49 repetition. The more you practice, the more you learn.Progress happens even when you are taking 50 baby steps (like practicing for a few minutes at a time).Take the time to celebrate your successes. When you 51 something you've been working on,acknowledge it with a "Yay me!Look what I did!" Give yourself 52 for what you've learned and enjoy your achievement, which will lead you to the next accomplishment. 53 ,you need to persevere(坚持不懈)no matter how difficult the situation is.I firmly believe these lessons 54 anything we take on.

Learning something new isn't always easy.Sometimes it's more demanding than you expected, but you are 55 rewarded in more ways than you could have imagined for the trying.

第二节:概要写作(满分25分)

阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Many Chinese students have studied English for approximately ten years, but most of them cannot even speak English correctly or fluently. In my opinion, there are several obstacles that have caused this to happen. The main obstacle is fear!Another is the habit of mentally translating from Chinese to English and then to change these thoughts into spoken words and sentences. Many of these difficulties are caused by the way Chinese people study and learn the language.

We must learn to speak as a child does. When we are learning a second language we need to remember how we learned our native language.Learning to understand and speak a language is one of the first skills a child develops. How does a child learn the language? He listens for a time and then he tries to repeat the words.Parents give great praise for the smallest effort and slightest improvement. Therefore, the child develops courage and is excited about learning. It takes a long time before he knows anything about grammar, spelling or formal sentence structures.

As for language teachers, they should avoid criticism and be very encouraging and generous with praise. Criticism or pointing out faults too often causes students to lose self-confidence and develop a fear of speaking. The best way to motivate a student is using praise.

The most important aspect of speaking is having good self-esteem.Self-esteem is how you feel about yourself. When most Chinese people are asked how their English is,or they are told their English is very good, they

immediately respond by saying, "Oh my English is very poor." If you say this to yourself often enough, you will believe it.When someone compliments(称赞)you, just say "thank you".

2016年浙江新高考英语题型解读—概要写作 一、2016年浙江新高考《考试说明》英语写作样题 第二节:概要写作(满分25分) 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。 Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is no thing fixed about attitudes to dirt. In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block o ut disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up t he skin and let ills in. A particular danger was though to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 15 46. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a frie ndly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman h ad taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman sho uld not go out. Though the belief in the merit (好处) of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been re garded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18 century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning awa y dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of pre venting disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter th an white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too f ar? Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of diseas e. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist (免疫学家), encourages ch ildren to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter (后者) positi on is gaining some ground. When he died in 1896, he left behind him a lot of money and his famous will. According to his will, most of his money was placed in a fund. He wanted the interest from the fund to be used as prizes every year. We know them as the Nobel Prizes. The Nobel Prizes are international. Alfred Nobel wanted the winners to be chosen for their work, not the country they came from. Alfred Nobel had given his whole life to his studies and work and to the benefits of mankind. He made money all by his own efforts, but he left the world share his wealth. His inventions and wealth stay with the world for ever. 1.Nobel wanted to set up the Nobel Peace Prize because _____. A. he made enough money B. he hated war C. he wanted to get more interest from the fund D. he liked to live in a peaceful world 2.Nobel Prizes come from _____. A. all Nobel’s money in the fund B. AllNobel’s money in his company C. all the interest from the fund D. some of the interest in the fund 3.Which statement of the following is Right according to the passage?_____. A. Nobel worked hard in his life and saved lots of money for the world to share. B When we can see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we come to see how important our eyes are. People who are nearsighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing, reading and sewing, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant things clearly.
