When I was twenty years old, my grandmother invited me to Europe for two weeks. I had never been to foreign countries before, so I was especially excited about the trip. When I told one of my professors about the trip, he suggested, “Keep a journal(日记).” More than t en years later, I am so thankful for his suggestion, as I can look back on this first trip to Europe through my journal.

Keeping a travel journal is very simple. Bring a journal with you during your vacation and write down the things that interest you. Interestingly, what appeals to you may not be the tourist attractions but some small things, such as something in your hotel room, and a talk you hear by chance. Your journal is the best thing you can bring back from a vacation.

It is a great idea to choose a good journal style that you like. Whether it is lined or unlined paper, pick up a journal that feels good in your hands. The size of your journal is also important. Some people feel that a travel journal should be small and easy to carry, while others prefer a larger-sized journal. My journal has always been about 8×11 inches. I haven’t found any real problems with carrying it. It fits well into a backpack. A good tip is to get some type of waterproof(防水的)cover for your journal. You never know when something in your bag may leak(渗漏), or it may start to rain, which can just ruin your journal.

In addition, consider carrying some plastic bags to bring back some pictures and postcards so that you can put them in your journal. You will probably find some things during the day that you want to attach to your journal at night in your hotel.

Always carry something to write with when you have your journal. Consider carrying a variety of pens, markers, or pencils so as to make your journal look more beautiful. Even if you are not very good at drawing, a journal has a way of freeing your creative juices. You will find yourself quickly drawing things or writing poems at the sides of the pages in your journal.

Tourist maps are also a wonderful thing to consider adding to your journal because they show where you have been. You can add parts of the map to show where you have been that day and then another part on another day to show where you have been the following day.

Bring a tube of glue to stick postcards and pictures to your journal. You can cut the pictures and

postcards into the shapes you like so that you can make your journal look more beautiful. Keep these things handy in a plastic bag so that you can find them easily.

There are so many things you can consider writing in your journal, such as the sights you have seen that day, a meal you have had, a person you have seen in a museum, a cafe that has caught your attention, your feelings about your trip or about the hotel you have stayed in, and a list of the things you also wish to do during your vacation. These are all the small details that do make up your trip.

Weekend gym rats might be onto something. Weekend warriors, who put recommended amounts of exercise into one or two gym sessions(时段), experience similar health benefits to those who work out several times a week, acc ording to a new study. And those benefits include a longer life. “It is encouraging news that working out in just one or two days per week is connected to a lower risk of demise, even among people who do some activities but don’t quite meet recommended exe rcise levels,” the lead researcher Emmanuel Stamatakis says in a statement.

The World Health Organization recommends that adults perform two and a half hours of moderate-intensity(中等强度的)physical exercise, or an hour and 25 minutes of more energetic exercise per week. Usually this is done within several days, with experts suggesting that adults get up

to 30 minutes of regular exercise each day. However, the new study suggests that busy people may be able to meet the standards when they have more free time, such as at weekends, and stay healthy all the same.

Researchers studied data from more than 63,000 men and women in England and Scotland, including data about their activity habits and risks for death. The researchers put each individual in one of four groups: those who described themselves as inactive, those who exercised but less than what was recommended, those who exercised in the “weekend warrior” style, and those who worked out regularly more than three days a week.

Adults who exercised in the “weekend warrior” style had a 40 percent lower risk of cardiovascular(心血管的)disease and a 30 percent lower risk of death by any cause than those who did not exercise at all. The lower risks of cardiovascular disease and overall death were similar to the risks of people who worked out regularly over the week.

But take a pause before you give up your weekday gym habit. Just a couple of light sessions won’t be enough to get benefits: “Weekend warrior” exercise sessions are usually 75-minute energetic workouts, according to the study.

The results are promising overall, if you just simply can't fit physical activities into most days. The key here is that exercise is truly a lifeline(救生索): It reduces your risk of illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, cancer and depression, according to the WHO. So, if you are just too busy on weekdays, let go of the guilt(内疚). Just make sure to hit the gym hard at weekends.

62. What does the underlined word “demise” in Paragraph 1 mean?

A. Loss

B. Death

C. Sadness

D. Failure

63. What should “weekend warriors” do to get benefits?

A. Focus on moderate-intensity physical exercise.

B. Exercise to meet different physical activity standards.

C. Exercise for at least 75 minutes either on Saturday or Sunday.

D. Perform more energetically than those who work out regularly.

64. What can we learn from the study?

A. We should let go of our guilt.

B. Short but hard workouts help as well.

C. It’s harmful to live a too busy life.

D. We’d better do our best to stay healthy.

65. After reading the passage, we can say that people should ________.

From the survey of students in our school, we have found that 51 percent of the students are willing to turn to their friends for help when they have problems. Meanwhile, 30 percent of the students prefer to talk about their problems with their teachers, and only 19 percent of the students want to ask their parents for help when they are in trouble.

The results show that most students are unwilling to communicate with their parents about their problems. One reason may be the generation gap which refers to a lack of understanding between parents and their children. Another one might be that some parents are usually too hard on their children. In this case, the students would rather communicate more with their friends, who can easily understand them.

In my opinion, we should try to communicate more often with our parents. On the other hand, parents should try their best to understand and support their children.

But I also want you to understand that realizing your dreams comes from hard work, some good luck and good timing. Here are some words of wisdom for you as you make your way in the world, from an entrepreneur (企业家) and from your mama. 1. Be open-minded to changing your path along the way In high school, I wanted to be a politician. I left my hometown and went off to college in Washington,DC. There, I discovered that I loved to support women. It taught me that I’m creative, a strong leader and great at marketing. As a result, I moved on to be the head of a national health-care nonprofit. Becoming a mother while in that job opened my mind to launching a breast pump bag (储奶袋) business. Now I run a highly successful company that I started up on my own. I'm not a politician! 2. Failure is critical to your success Failure can be heartbreaking. But I will tell you that every failure I’ve had along the way has absolutely made me better. Failing the big math exam in high school and going to summer school was embarrassing. I eventually passed, and I’ve never failed an exam again. I learned from that experience to ask for help. Now, I ask for help in business all the time. I’m proud to be a role model to you as a mom and an entrepreneur. I hope I inspire you to believe that you can be anything you want. It will be my pleasure to watch your lives unfold before my eyes. Love, Your mom 21. In the writer’s opinion, what does it take to realize one’s dream? A. Failure, hard work and good timing. B. Twenty-one years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different story to tell. My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to leave college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait. Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a mix of adopted(收养)and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To put eyes on him was wonderful and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No.3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy. You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8. Our home was a complete zoo—a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full-time. But I never gave upon the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant taking as few as one class each term. The hardest part was feeling sorry about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to give up, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.

河北省石家庄实验中学2019-2020学年高一3月月考英语试题 Word版缺答案

石家庄实验中学高一英语月考试卷 命题人:高一英语组 阅读理解(每小题2.5分,共25分) A I had a great time this past summer visiting Stone Mountain Park with my twin grandsons. I had the opportunity to spend the day with them seeing the various sights and attractions. One thing that my grandsons had really wanted to do that particular day was to climb to the top of the mountain. Stone Mountain isn't a particularly tall mountain and fortunately has walking trails to the top, but for two 5-year-olds, along with Grandpa, it's a formidable task. Since my grandsons' enthusiasm was much greater than mine, I decided to start the slow walk up the mountain. The beginning part of the trail was slow and gradual. It seemed like we were taking forever to climb just a short distance, but I had to remind myself that it took 3 of their steps to equal1 of mine, so I found myself walking ahead of them, then having to stop and let them catch up, over and over again. I was tired and sweaty, just wanting to get to the top of the mountain so I could rest well before starting my way back. I learned early during our walk that this wasn't going to be the case. We had to stop and look at every large rock with someone’s name carved in it. We looked at unusual plant formations. We examined large trees and we explored small rock overhangs that reminded the kids of caves. My grandsons viewed the walk as an exciting adventure. Climbing the mountain was a trial to me but my grandsons were not focused at all on the trial of climbing the mountain; they were simply enjoying the journey of the walk. I know when I face a trial in life, I tend to always think of the problem. I want the trial to be over quickly and let life get back to normal. What can I learn during the course of trial? At some point, the trial will be over and we'll be joyous for sure. However, the real joy should not be that the trial’s over, but I am celebrating what I learned during the journey. 1. What does the underlined word "formidable" in Paragraph 1mean? A. Relaxing. B. Meaningful. C. Strange. D. Difficult. 2. What can we know from Paragraph 2? A. The writer kept challenging his grandsons to catch up with him.

In Tokyo there are always too many people in the places where I want to be. Of course there are too many cars. The Japanese drive very fast when they can. But in Tokyo they often spend a long time in traffic jams. Tokyo is not different when one wants to walk. At certain times of the day there are a lot of people on foot in London's Oxford Street. But the streets near Ginza in Tokyo always have a lot of people on foot, and sometimes it is really difficult to walk. People are very polite; there are just too many of them. The worst time to be in the street is at 11:30 at night. That is when the night-clubs are closing and everybody wants to go home. There are 35,000 night-clubs in Tokyo, and you do not often see one that is empty. Most people travel to and from work by train. Tokyo people buy six million train tickets every day. At most stations, trains arrive every two or three minutes, but at certain hours there do not seem to be enough trains. Although they are usually crowded, Japanese trains are very good. They always leave and arrive on time. On a London train you would see everybody reading a newspaper. In Tokyo trains everybody in a seat seems to be asleep, whether his journey is long or short. In Tokyo, I stood outside the station for five minutes. Three fire-engines raced past on the way to one of the many fires that Tokyo has every day. Tokyo has so many surprises that none of them can really surprise me now. Instead, I am surprised at myself: I must go there next year on business. I know I hate the overcrowded city. But I feel like a man who is returning to his long-lost love. 21. Tokyo is different from London in that ____________.
