16. Christmas Day

Christmas Day, the 25th of December, is the biggest festival celebrated in the Christian countries of the world. Christians regard this day as the birthday of Jesus Christ, but many of the customs and celebrations are not of a religious nature.

In the large shops preparations for Christmas start five or six weeks before the actual day. Shop owners like Christmas because it is a time when people exchange presents. In large towns decorations are put up in the main streets two or three weeks before Christmas.

Preparations are also made at home. Special puddings and cakes are eaten on Christmas Day and these have to be made three or four weeks in advance. Two or three days before Christmas, people decorate their houses with paper decorations and leaves and branches. People also like to have a Christmas tree in the living room. This is a very small fir tree, which is decorated with silver paper and colored lights.

Although everyone enjoys Christmas Day, it is particularly enjoyed by children, because they know that Christmas Father will bring them gifts from the chimney at night.

Every family has its own traditions at Christmas. Some exchange presents on Christmas morning. Others put all the presents around the Christmas tree and wait till evening before giving them out. But all families have a huge Christmas dinner---usually at midday. If they can afford it they have a turkey and ham followed by Christmas puddings.

Everybody likes to be happy at Christmas time. The theatre puts on special shows for children. The circus is another thing that parents may take their children to see. 17. Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving Day is a special holiday in the United States and Canada. Families and friends gather to eat and give thanks for their blessing.

Thanksgiving Day is really a harvest festival. This is why it is celebrated in late fall, after the crops are in. The first New England Thanksgiving did celebrate a rich harvest. The pilgrims landed at what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620. They had a difficult time and the first winter was cruel. Many of the pilgrims died. But the next year, they had a good harvest. So Governor Bradford declared a three-day feast. The pilgrims invited Indian friends to join them for their special feast. Everyone brought food.

In time, other colonies began to celebrate a day of thanksgiving. But it took years before there was a national Thanksgiving Day. During the Civil War, Sarah Josepha Hale convinced Abraham Lincoln to do something about it. He proclaimed the last Thursday of November 1863 as a day of thanksgiving. Today, Americans celebrate this happy harvest festival on the fourth Thursday in November. Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving Day in much the same way as their American neighbors. But the Canadian Thanksgiving Day falls on the second Monday in October.

On Thanksgiving Day everyone is ready for one of the biggest meals of the year. Mother is

up early to put the turkey into the oven while father and children help to get the house ready for guests.

When the turkey, the vegetables and many other things are on the table, everyone sits down. Some families say a prayer to give thanks f or their food. That’s the reason for Thanksgiving. Americans want to remember the Pilgrims and their trips across the ocean in 1620. Thanksgiving dinner is like the meal of those Pilgrims after their first long winter in New England.

Thanksgiving is not just a day to eat and to remember the Pilgrims. It is also a time of year when people travel from far away to be with their families.

19. Surnames of the Western People

The origins of family names are very interesting to talk about. It is helpful for us beginners to know about them in learning a foreign language.

In early times, when people lived in small villages, surnames were unnecessary. Everyone knew everyone else in the village and there were rarely visitors from outside. If someone referred to Stephen or Hilda, everyone knew at once who it was since there was only one Stephen or one Hilda in the village. But as time went on, tiny villages became big ones. Then there might be several Stephens and several Hildas in the same place. It then became necessary to tell one from the other. How was this done?

One way of telling one Stephen from another was by adding the name of his trade. As a result there might be Stephen the miller, Stephen the cook, Stephen the weaver, Stephen the shepherd. After a time these would be shortened to Stephen Miller, Stephen Cook, Stephen Weaver, etc., which gradually came into being. Before long, the same names were given to the men's children at birth and their wives took the same surnames on marriage.

Another way of distinguishing men with the same name was to refer to them by the name of the place where they lived. If three men were all called John, one might be referred to as John in the field, another as John in the woods, and the other as John under the hill. In this way surnames such as Field, Wood, Hill, Pond, and Shore came into use.

Another important way of distinguishing between men with the same name was to say whose sons they are. Of three men with the name of Tom, one might be called Tom the son of John, another Tom the son of William, and the third Tom the son of Richard. This practice gradually produced common surnames such as Johnson, Richardson, Robinson, Jackson, and Wilson.

Still another way of distinguishing men was to give them nicknames according to the sort of person they were. Thus a very small man might be called John the small man. A very short one might come to be known as Stephen the short man. This gave rise to many surnames such as Short, Small, Long, White, Wise, Strong, Bright.

Comprehension Questions:

1. According to the passage, the origins of surnames are not associated with ______

A. one’s occupation or job.

B. one’s residence.

C. one’s appearance or characters.

D. animals that people kept.

2. Tom Hunter wants to see you. You wonder how his surname was formed. The origin of his surname is connected with his ancestor’s ______

A. occupation.

B. residence.

C. appearance. C. characters.

3. Which of the following reasons why surnames were formed is not mentioned in the passage? ______

A. The villages where people lived grew larger and larger.

B. There might be several people who had the same name in a village.

C. There might be more visitors from outside.

D. It was necessary for people to distinguish those who had the same name.

4. From this article we may conclude that ______ once played an important part in social life.

A. men

B. women

C. trade

D. living places

5. The article seems to suggest the origin of surnames have nothing to do with ______

A. one's trade.

B. one's living place.

C. one's mother.

D. one's nickname.

20. Different Names About Britain

When we do some reading, we often come across these names:The British Isles, Britain, Great Britain, England and the United Kingdom (U.K. for short). These different names are often used to mean the same thing. But do you know the differences between them?

The British Isles consist of two large islands; one is called Ireland and the other Britain. Britain, or Great Britain, is the larger of these two islands and it is divided into three parts: Scotland, Wales, and England. Is does not include Northern Ireland.

The United Kingdom is the name used at the United Nations; in full, this is “the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”. It is that part of the British Isles ruled over by the Queen. It consists of Scotland, Wales, and England, and also the Northern part of Ireland.

England is the largest, most populous, and generally speaking, the richest section. It is only a part of Great Britain. The importance of England is so great in Britain that some foreigners just say “England” when they mean Britain.

阅读时抓住时间这条主线,弄清who、 what、where、why与how。

When times get tough, we all look for ways to cut back. When we're hungry, we eat at home instead of going out. We take buses instead of taxis. And we wear our old designer jeans just a few months longer. With college expenses at all-time highs, high school students are eager to do anything to cut the cost of a university education. One cost-cutting proposal is to allow college students to get a bachelor's degree in three years instead of four. Educational institutions have been actively exploring ways to make the learning process more efficient. But there's a question: Would the quality of undergraduate education suffer? Few US universities have formally approved a "three-year degree" model. I doubt that mainstream North American colleges will carry out a three-year curriculum any time soon. For one thing, most universities already allow highly qualified students to graduate early by testing out of certain classes and obtaining a number of college credits. In addition, at famous universities, the committee who determine which courses are required and which courses are electives are unlikely to suddenly "throw out" one quarter of the required credits. Professors will resist "diluting (稀释)" the quality of the education they offer. In my opinion, a quality four-year education is always superior to a quality three-year education. A college education requires sufficient time for a student to become skilled in their major and do coursework in fields outside their major. It is not a good idea to water down education, any more than it's not a good idea to water down medicine. If we want to help students find their way through university, we should help them understand early on what knowledge and skills they need to have upon graduation. We should allow students to test out of as many courses as possible. We should give them a chance to earn money as interns (实习生) in meaningful part-time jobs that relate to their university studies, such as the five-year co-op program at Northeastern University. (1)Which of the following can best sum up the main idea? A.It's time to shorten the learning process. B.Best learning takes place over time. C.University education should be watered down. D.College education calls for reform. (2)We can learn from the passage that ________. A.most American universities are against the "three-year degree" model B.many famous US universities are considering adopting the "three-year degree" model C.professors are willing to accept the "three-year degree" model D.The "three-year degree" model can make college learning more efficient (3)In most US universities, ________. A.college students are offered the co-op program B.electives' credits make up one quarter of the required credits C.all students are required to finish four-year education before graduation D.some excellent students can graduate ahead of time

What’s the main idea of this passage ? What does this passage mainly discuss? What’s the topic of this passage ? 2. What’s the best title? The best title for this text is (to tell ) ————. 3. The main purpose of this text is ————. The author’s purpose o f writing this text is to ————. What’s the main purpose of the passage?

A typical child plays many roles, such as friend, neighbor, son or daughter. Simply reminding children of that fact can lead to better problem-solving and more flexible thinking, according to new research from Duke University. Better problem-solving was just one positive finding of the study, said lead author Sarah Gaither, an assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke. After thinking about their own various identities, children also showed more flexible thinking about race and other social groupings—a behavior that could be valuable in an increasingly diverse society. In a series of experiments, Gaither and her colleagues looked at 196 children, ages 6 and 7. In an experiment, one group of children was reminded that they had various identities, such as son, daughter, reader or helper. A second group of children was reminded of their multiple physical attributes, such as a mouth, arms and legs. All the children then needed to handle a few tasks Children who were reminded of their various identities showed stronger problem-solving and creative thinking skills. When shown pictures of a bear staring at honey-filled beehive(蜂窝)high up in a tree, these children had more creative ideas for how the bear might get the honey, such as turning over a bowl so that it became a stool(凳子). In other words, they saw a new use for the bowl. Children who were reminded of their multiple roles also showed more flexible thinking about social groupings. When asked to categorize different photos of faces, they suggested many ways to Spso. They identified smiling faces such as unsmiling ones, and old and young faces. The other children, meanwhile, primarily grouped people's faces by race and gender(性别). The-study suggests ways to promote flexible thinking for the young, which could be especially valuable for teachers." Gaither said. Ana, her husband Mario, and their four-year old son Antonio just moved to North Carolina. They need a temporary place to call "home" until they get settled into their new surroundings. So, Ana figured that she had better start looking for an apartment for them to stay in. First, Ana picked up an Apartment Book at her local newspaper stand. The Apartment Book contained listings of all the major apartment complexes in her area. Ana started by looking at the prices in the advertisements for apartments in the Apartment Book. Then, she read about the amenities that each apartment complex offered. For example, some apartments had a clubhouse, a gym (also called a "fitness center"), and a pool. After considering prices, amenities, and locations, Ana found a few apartment complexes that she liked. Ana called the apartment complexes. She set up appointments with the apartment managers to see the apartments she found interesting. Ana made five phone calls, total. "I'll see you then," she said to the fifth apartment manager, and hung up the phone. When Mario got home (to the hotel in which they were staying) from work, Ana showed him the list of apartments. "These look good," he said. "Mommy, let me see," said Antonio, whom Mario had just brought home from childcare. Ana showed Antonio the pictures of the apartments. The next day, while Mario was at work and Antonio was at childcare, Ana visited the apartment complexes. After visiting all five, she found that she liked the fifth one the best. It was near a good school system for her son, and it was near her and her husband's workplace. She went home and discussed it with her husband, and they decided that they wanted to rent the apartment. The next day, they called the manager of the apartment complex and told him that they would like the apartment. The manager asked them to sign a rental contract and pay a security deposit so that if any damage was done to the apartment while they were in it, the security deposit would pay for it. They signed the rental contract and paid the security deposit. Finally, they had a place to stay. (1)Which of the following is not an amenity? A.Clubhouse. B.Fitness center. C.Pool. D.High ceilings. There are lots of ways to educate yourself on the Internet. You can find photos, documents, and films on almost any topic you can imagine. And at https://www.wendangku.net/doc/129296744.html,, you can access lectures by artists, scholars, designers, technicians and others. TED began in 1984 as a conference that brought together individuals from the fields of technology, entertainment and design. It was intended to be a one-time event focusing on technology and design. The event ended up losing money, and it was six years before the founders tried it again. This time it worked, and since 1990, the TED conference has been an annual event. There are now two held every year, with topics as diverse as music, medicine, and money. Other specialized spin-off conferences address narrower issues. The TED website came from a desire to share the conferences with the world, to "offer free knowledge from the world's most inspired thinkers," as the website puts it. The current version of the site was launched in April 2007, and contains videos of talks given at the TED conferences around the world. The talks are transcribed into hundreds of languages. The TED website is owned by the Sapling Foundation, a non profit devoted to fostering the spread of great ideas. The Sapling foundation acquired TED in 2001. Since then, it has been focusing on using TED to broadcast ideas that might change the world. TED, of course, isn't immune to criticism. It's been called elitist(精英) for its high ticket prices (more than 6,000 dollars total). It's been accused by a few people of censorship for not publishing their talks. One controversial speaker was upset about being criticized by the conference's host afterward. The complaints, however, seem to be relatively few for such a large, long-running organization. And accusations of elitism ring hollow when so much is given away for free on TED's website. Whatever its failings, TED is a source of inspirational information for those who seek it out. (1)What is the main topic of the article? A.The case against TED B.What's on TED today. C.Pros and cons of https://www.wendangku.net/doc/129296744.html,.
