II, p. 66 1He means that a welfare client is believed to lie to get a little extra welfare money

and those caseworkers know it well. 2He has chosen to live an honest life by drumming up some

business outside and drawing cartoons for magazines. 3They know clearly that they are being made

fools of by some of their clients, and they feel they are entitled to have clients bow to them as

compensation. 4He doesn't think those caseworkers are to blame so he isn't being bitter. 51 / 11

Because he believes it practically requires people to lie. 6He had to call a caseworker he called

Suzanne first. After giving a little lecture, Suzanne was supposed to notify the medical worker,

who would certify that there was a problem. Then the medical worker called the wheelchair repair

Unit 4

II, p. 95 1The living standards in the developing world will be greatly improved. 2The author

refers to those places without telecommunications facilities such as telephones, which hinders

exchange of information. 3Because advanced communications and subsequent widespread access to

information technologies enable the developing regions to shorten the process of changing from

labor-intensive assembly work to industries that involve engineering, marketing and design. 4Because they believe it is in bad need of any phones and it lacks experience

in weighing costs and

choosing between technologies. 5First, it sold a 30% stake in its national phone company to two

Western companies to quicken the import of Western technology. Second, it had leased rights to a

Dutch-Scandinavian group of companies to build and operate an advanced digital mobile phone system.

6Wireless. For it's cheaper to build radio towers than to string lines across mountain ridges and

it is a reliable service. 7Because customers there talk two to four times as long on the phone as

people in North America. 8Because mobile phones make it possible for them to keep contact with

each other even when they are caught in the traffic jams.

VIII, p. 98 1Concentrate on indoor delights rather than outdoor fights and you'll be much better

appreciated. 2As a result of the development of the information superhighway many people may

eventually be able to work at home rather than go to an office. 3Some people say that this term

pupils' achievements will be measured by a formal test rather than by their teachers' assessment.

4They argued that their products should be developed on the basis of need rather than profit. 5During weekends the businessmen may spend some time establishing friendship and mutual trust rather

than discussing any particular item of business.

IX, p. 99 1Petrol now is twice as expensive as it was a few years ago 2Theirs is about three

times as big as ours 3Latin American customers talk two to four times as long on the phone as

people in North America 4the fee for cell phones is typically twice as much as for calls made over

fixed lines 5can transmit 250,000 times as much data as a standard telephone wire X, p. 99 1By installing the latest wireless transmission systems, a parade of urban centers and

industrial zones from Beijing to Budapest are stepping directly into the Information Age. 2Widespread access to information technology promises to condense the time required to change from

labor-intensive assembly work to industries that involve engineering, marketing and design. 3Modern communications will give countries like China and Vietnam a huge advantage over countries

stuck with old technologies. 4There is little dispute that communications will be a key factor

separating the winners from the losers. 5The economy of the country is stuck in recession and it

barely has the money to scratch the surface of the problem. 6Businesses eager for reliable

service are willing to pay a significantly high price tag for a wireless call. 7Having an

operation there is like having an endless pile of money at your disposal. 8For countries that

have lagged behind for so long, the temptation to move ahead in one jump is hard to resist. XI, p. 100 1一个将会大大提高发展中国家生活水准的转变正方兴未艾. 2所有这些发展中

Unit 5

II, p. 124 1All 22 million of people live alone, which suggests that it is an overwhelming

phenomenon in the United States. 2Because they can find inspiration in solitude. 3The more

capable the person is of thinking on his own, the less his need for staying with others. 4It

depends. If he lives with them, the friends' temporary leaving will be received as a welcome change.

However, if he lives alone, the temporary absence of friends will leave him nothing but the feeling

of emptiness. 5The need to talk is the most basic need of a solitary person. 6He may call

friends to tell them important things, or talk to himself, his pets, the television, or even to

strangers in the supermarket. 7He should stay rational, settle himself in a comfortable and

pleasant way and wait for anythin g happy that may happen. 8As ordinary people's solitary

condition of living differs from that of the great minds like the poets and philosophers, they

should cherish the thought that since we are here, we may as well stay and make the best

of it.

VIII, p. 127 1The more openly you and your doctor can talk together, the better the service your

doctor will be able to give you. 2The more Renee Henry learnt about the therapy, the more she

became convinced that it was right for her. 3The more a nation's companies locate factories

abroad, the smaller will be the country's recorded exports. 4The less exercise you do, the more

unfit you will become, and the harder everyday tasks will seem. 5Remember that the less processed

a food, the higher its mineral and vitamin content.

IX, p. 128 1You might as well go there to see whether there is the information you need 2We

might as well call it freedom 3You may as well ring and tell them you're going to visit them 4We might / may as well walk home 5We might / may as well find an easier one to read

X, p. 128 1Poets and philosophers all speak highly of themselves for seeking out solitude, from

which they can draw inspiration. 2A humble person tends to suffer from solitude, feeling himself

inadequate company, longing for others to be around. 3The widowed old lady was so lonely that she

would talk at length to the strangers in the supermarket about her pets. 4The condition of

loneliness rises and falls, but our need to talk goes on forever - the need of telling someone the

daily succession of small observations and opinions.5To a person living alone, it's important to

stay rational and settle down and make himself comfortable, and find some grace and pleasure in his

condition. 6If you live with other people, their temporary absence can be refreshing. 7Scientific surveys show that those who live alone talk at length to themselves and their pets and

the television. 8It's important to stop waiting and settle down and make ourselves comfortable,

at least for the time being.

The Temptation of a Respectable Woman Mrs.Baroda was a little annoyed to learn that her husband expected his friend, Gouvernail, up to spend a week or two on the plantation. Gouvernail's quiet personality puzzled Mrs.Baroda. After a few days with him, she could understand him no better than at first. She left her husband and his guest, for the most part, alone together, only to find that Gouvernail hardly noticed her absence. Then she imposed her company upon him, accompanying him in his idle walks to the mill to press her attempt to penetrate the silence in which he had unconsciously covered himself. But it hardly worked. "When is he going — your friend?" she one day asked her husband. "For my part, I find him a terrible nuisance." "Not for a week yet, dear. I can't understand; he gives you no trouble." "No. I should like him better if he did — if he were more like others, and I had to plan somewhat for his comfort and enjoyment." Gaston pulled the sleeve of his wife's dress, gathered his arms around her waist and looked merrily into her troubled eyes. "You are full of surprises," he said to her. "Even I can never count upon how you are going to act under given conditions. Here you are," he went on, "taking poor Gouvernail seriously and making a fuss about him, the last thing he would desire or expect."

新视野大学英语读写教程第四册sectionA作文

新视野英语第四册作文 UNIT1 Parents differ from children in their career choice. The question of who should be responsible for planning their career often causes problems for many children. Parents think that they know their children well enough to decide what kind of job suits them. They are afraid that their children are too young to decide their future on their own. However, many children would argue that they should be left free to make their own choices. The other aspect of career choice is that parents and their children are often different in their opinions of the ideal profession. Parents would prefer children to choose some professions that are stable and could bring prestige and economic benefits. But some children would rather choose professions that are challenging and require independent and creative thinking. UNIT2 Charlie Chaplin is a great comic for his native land Britain, but even more so for the world. On the stage he often wore tiny moustaches, huge pants and tailcoats that were perhaps more characteristic of Europeans and may be not much of the British. Since more than half of the roles Chaplin played were in silent films, people throughout the world had no difficulty understanding his films. With sound movies, Chaplin created a nonsense language that had no known nationality and was accepted and appreciated by people all over the world. For most of his lifetime he did not stay in his mother country; he traveled throughout the world to appear on the stage for people of different nationalities. UNIT3 It is difficult to get a welfare client's wheelchair repaired. Once my wheelchair needed repairing, and I notified my caseworker. She gave me a lecture that I hadn't taken good care of my wheelchair. Then she told me that I must have the patience to wait until she had the time to report my wheelchair conditions to my medical worker. Then the medical worker called the wheelchair repair companies to get the cheapest bid and informed the main welfare office at the state capital. It took them another several days to consider the matter. When they finally got my wheelchair repaired, I had been confined to bed for more than half a month. UNIT4

The so-called “mean” by Confucius doesn’t mean “compromise” but a “moderate” and “just-right” way when understanding and handling objective things. Confucius advocated that this thought should not only be treated as a way to understand and deal with things but also be integrated into one’s daily conduct to make it a virtue through self-cultivation and training.
