第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A, B, C, D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。

A

Many of you should not own dogs. It’s that simple. The reason is that, if you own a dog,

you must train a dog, and many dog owners out there, it is safe to say, have little or no control over their dogs, because they do not train them.

Strong words? Maybe. But they are simple, honest words, as untrained dogs living in residential neighborhoods bark at will, run loose, and visit and damage neighboring properties with their owners’blessings as they deliberately let them run.

Take note of the fact that you, the dog owner, cannot control your dog causing a continual nuisance(麻烦事)that damages the quality of life in your neighborhood. There’s nothing more annoying to most people than a dog that barks and nothing more confusing than trying to understand the deficient(有缺陷的)mentality of the dog owner who allows his dog to do so. After all, the irresponsible dog owner hears the barking too, and so those who must put up with

it are continually left wondering-what are they thinking, are they deaf?

Many dog owners believe it is not possible for their dog to be trained, an indication that the owners themselves lack self discipline, and most likely have never really tried to apply discipline to other issues in their lives, not with consistency, or that they are simply lazy and inattentive to their own adult responsibilities at the expense of others.

Irresponsible dog owners, though, do train their dogs. A dog is a reflection of its owner. Whatever a dog does (run loose, bark at will, jump on guests entering the front door, soil neighboring lawns) is a result of the decisions of the owner. The choice not to do something is indeed a choice.

The good news is that with mere consistency, a dog can be trained rather quickly, in a couple of weeks if the owner takes his responsibility seriously. Again, that process will be a reflection of the owner's behavior, and the primary ingredient(要素)in that behavior is not allowing the dog, not even once, to repeat the bad behavior without consequences when told and directed not to. You can stop your dog from barking with simple firm voice commands, direct

eye contact, and force of will in a relatively short time, provided you are consistent and a reasonably mature person.

Dogs, what,s more, love this training because pleasing you, their owner, is what they arc all about. The upshot(结果,要点)will be that you have a more connected relationship with your dog, a better dog that is suited to its environment.

56. Which is NOT the reason for dog owners to have little or no control over their dogs?

A. They are lazy and unwilling to train their dogs.

B. They think their dogs can act well without training.

C,They lack self-control over many issues in daily life.

D. They don't give enough attention to their responsibilities.

57. What's the author's attitude towards owners of untrained dogs?

A. Prejudiced.

B. Unclear.

C. Disapproving.

D. Curious.

58. This article is mainly written to_.

A. instruct dog owners how to train dogs

B .call on dog owners to train their dogs

C. sing high praise for responsible dog owners

D. analyze the relationship between dog owners and their dogs

59. It can be concluded from the passage that_.

A. responsible dog owners can put up with dogs’barking

B .irresponsible dog owners deliberately train their dogs to do something wrong

C. we should not own dogs because they can damage the quality of our daily life

D .whether a dog can be trained properly may depend on the dog owner's behavior

The closest known relative of the ancestors of limbed(肢体)animals such as humans may have evolved the foundation for back legs even before the move to land, researchers say. This ancestor may have even been able to walk underwater, they add.

These findings reveal that a key step in the evolution of back limbs happened in fish, challenging previous theories that such appendages(附肢)evolved only after the move to land. Scientists investigated fossils(化石)of a 375-million-year-old fish known as Tiktaalik, discovered in 2004 in northern Canada's Ellesmere Island. Possessing a broad flat head and sharp teeth, Tiktaalik resembled a cross between a fish and a crocodile, growing to a length of 9 feet (2.7 meters) as it hunted for its food in shallow freshwater.

This ancient creature was undoubtedly a fish. However, it also had features seen in modern tetrapods(四足动物).

This ancient fish had large forefins and shoulders, elbows and partial wrists, enabling it to support itself on ground. This makes it the best-known example of a link between finned(鳍)animals and limbed animals marking the evolutionary change from water to land for creatures with backbones.

Previous analyses of other fossils dating from the water-land change found their back appendages were small and weak compared with their front appendages. This suggested the earliest ancestors of tetrapods perhaps had a "front-wheel drive" form of movement that depended more on their front limbs, and that a "four-wheel drive" form of movement with strong hips and back limbs only developed after tetrapods evolved.

Until now, the only fossils of Tiktaalik researchers had examined were of its front parts. To find out more about the fish, researchers investigated additional blocks of rock recovered from the dig site where Tiktaalik was discovered. Although some of these blocks were first dug in 2004, researchers did not look at them more closely until recently, mainly because the blocks did not seem to contain much bone. Moreover, it took years to carefully and properly remove the rock surrounding the fragile fossils.

The scientists discovered the back part of Tiktaalik. This made a direct comparison of the front and back appendages of the animal possible. Unexpectedly, the researchers found Tiktaalik had big, strong pelvic(胃盆)bones with similarities to early tetrapods.

"I was expecting to find a diminutive back fin and pelvis," study lead author Neil Shubin, a paleontologist at the University of Chicago, told LiveScience. "Seeing the huge pelvis set me back a bit-I looked at it again and again, because I was quite surprised."

Shubin cautioned that Tiktaalik is not the ancestor of all limbed vertebrates. It is currently the closest known relative, "but not the only, direct ancestor," he said. "It is more like our closest cousin."

63.According to the passage, previous findings show that_.

A. the evolution of back limbs happened under the water

B. the ancestors of limbed animals could walk underwater

C. the back legs of limbed animals evolved after the transition to living on land

D. tetrapods had a "four-wheel drive" form of movement before they evolved

64. Scientists think the findings of Tiktaalik are significant because_.

A. Tiktaalik is the earliest fish living on the earth

B. Tiktaalik fills a gap between fish and limbed animals

C. Tiktaalik is the only closest known relative of limbed animals

D. Tiktaalik gives them a chance to compare the front and back limbs

65.Why didn't the researchers examine the fossils of the back part of Tiktaalik many years ago?

A. Because the blocks contained too much bone of Tiktaalik.

B .Because Tiktaalik is not the ancestor of all limbed animals.

C. Because the research of fossils is a slow and time-consuming process.

D. Because the fossils were discovered in northern Canada's Ellesmere Island.

66. What does the underlined word "diminutive" in Paragraph 8 mean?

A. Unique.

B. Complete.

C. Flexible.

D. Small.

In many American schools the holiday celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday is used as an opportunity to teach children about his life and legacy. But in too many of those same schools, Black children's extraordinary talents are still being wasted today. Nearly three-quarters of Black fourth and eighth grade public school students cannot read or compute at grade level. Black students made up only 18 percent of students in public schools in 2009-2010 but were 40 percent of students who received one or more out-of-school suspensions(暂被停学).A Black public school student is suspended every four seconds. Black students are more than twice as likely to drop out of school as White students. Each school day 763 Black high school students drop out.

So I applaud the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice for their recent action to address harmful school discipline policies that push so many thousands of black children out of school each year and into the juvenile(青少年)justice and adult prison pipeline. If the education system is to do its part in replacing it with a cradle to college, career and success pipeline, we must end the current practice where children in the greatest need are suspended from school mostly for nonviolent offenses.

These resources, officially known as "guidance," will help schools and districts meet their legal responsibility to protect students from discrimination on the basis of race, color or national origin as required under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As we recognize the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and so many other important hard-won victories in the Civil Rights Movement this year, we must remember those victories could be lost without meaningful enforcement of the laws advocates fought so hard to win half a century ago.

While the guidance does not prohibit schools or districts from using any particular nondiscriminatory policy, it does call into question some policies that have historically excluded Black students and are of questionable educational value including "zero tolerance" discipline policies which require mandatory(强制的)consequences for certain infractions(违反),and policies that prevent students from returning to school after completion of a court sentence.

Information of the new guidance recommendations is available at this government website for almost every school and district in the country. Check your own school district now to see whether the discipline policy is focused on creating a positive school climate and preventing misbehavior, whether consequences are clear, appropriate and consistent, and whether there is a commitment to fairness in the application of discipline.

67. What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?

A. Unsatisfactory situation of Black students’education.

B .Life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

C .The percentage of Black students dropping out of school.

D. The holiday celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

68.The guidance issued by the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice may_.

A. protect Black children from being suspended for nonviolent offenses

B .prevent Black children from coming back to school after a court sentence

C. push thousands of Black children out of school each year

D .punish Black children for dropping out of school

69. According to the passage, the "zero tolerance" discipline policies_·

A. have questionable consequences

B .are prohibited by the guidance

C .prevent Black children from being absent from school

D. were considered discriminatory when they were released

70. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. Criticism of the Education System

B. Steps Forward on School Discipline

C .Suggestions on the Civil Rights Act D. Victories in the Civil Rights Movement

What Colleges Will Be Like in 2023

Imagine a university without textbooks and classes without calendars, but still costs a lot of money.

Ten years from now college might not look too different from the outside, but the learning experience students receive will probably be different from the one they get today.

Here are four areas where you can expect to see major changes and one area where you probably won't:

The Classroom

In the near future, professors will run their courses over digital platforms where data on each student's progress can be collected. These platforms were initially developed for massive open online courses, or MOOCs. However, universities are now folding these platforms back into their traditional classes because they make it easier to share content, host discussions and keep track of student work. A professor might still "teach" a class, but most of the interaction will happen online. If professors and students do meet in a physical classroom, it will be to review material, work through problems or drill down on discussion topics.

The Calendar

As more classes move partially or entirely online, the requirements of having a uniform start and end date diminish(缩小).Having all the class material online also means some students could sail through a semester's worth of classes in a few weeks and then start again

with new courses. Some might finish a bachelor's degree in two years. Those who stick around for four years might have three majors.

The Institution

More universities are making their courses available through online platforms such as Coursera and edX, and great lectures can be found on YouTube. Students are supplementing(补充)their own school's classes with online lectures from rock-star professors at other institutions.

More and more, this type of learning will become part of college life. "Students will be able to acquire knowledge globally, across different campuses," says Ron Kraemer, chief information and digital officer at the University of Notre Dame.

Schools, meanwhile, will take advantage of this setup to conserve their resources. They might develop courses of their own only when they think they can provide a big advantage over other schools’offerings. Otherwise, they might simply adopt a world-beating course that was developed elsewhere, and then put their own stamp on it by designing assignments, discussions and student-faculty interactions. Already, for example, students at several California State University campuses such as San Jose and Sacramento are taking engineering classes that were developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The Textbook

These 10-pound hardcover volumes used to have Psychology 101 or the "Rocks for Jocks" geology class. But this giant bundle, and the profitable publishing industry that produced it, will quickly unravel(瓦解)as professors pick and choose the sections they like best and assemble their own course packs.

The books themselves will stop to be physical volumes and instead will be sources of interactive digital content that include text, videos and simulations(模拟).In some cases, the material that used to be in a textbook will simply be integrated into the online course platfonn, where students can watch a lecture, read an essay and do a homework assignment.

第五部分:书面表达麟分25分)

阅读下面短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

It was 7:30 in the morning. As usual I was on the subway to school. It was so crowded with people that it felt like the air conditioner wasn't working. I was standing there looking around. Then, I saw an old lady get on the train with a 7-year-old child who seemed to be her grandson.

A warm-hearted gentleman generously offered his seat to the old lady. Instead of sitting down herself, however, the old lady called her grandson over and told him to sit.

Sooner or later, children mature and step into the complicated world. Love is necessary in the early development of children, yet, to the disappointment of many, too much love definitely prevents children from learning the rules of the real world. Teaching the child about the rules of

society within the family helps the child to achieve success later. By giving up seats to their children, grandparents may destroy kids' best chance for character development.

It includes airfare ($225), hotel ($170), dining out ($116) and dressing up ($95) and the gift. If you have weddings to attend this year, here are some tips for you to avoid breaking the bank. 1. Book flights in advance The moment you decide to attend a wedding is the time to check flight prices at the best time. Plane fares are higher in the summer, especially in July and August. Booking in advance will save you money, as will watch for sales on lower-cost carriers like JetBlue and Frontier. You can check Google Flights for a calendar of prices showing the cheapest days to fly from apps like Hopper to get real-time alerts when a fare is at its lowest price point. 2. Don't blow your budget on the gift If you've got the money, an expensive gift is lovely. But there's no need to take out loans to prove your love for the happy couple. Skip an expensive necklace by giving (an appropriate amount of) cash instead. To save on the gift, consider making one: A photo album or scrapbook of memories with the bride and groom shows how much you care. You could also share the gift with other guest(s) or even make gifts with DIY ideas by yourself to save money. 3. Use old dresses and suits You don't always have to be on a new dress for a wedding. While men have the option of repeating their suits, women are more likely to spend money on new clothes for the special occasion. But before you take out your wallet, consider reinventing something already in your

Any type of hobby that you can think of can be found in Australia. The following are four top Australian pastimes. Fishing Fishing is probably one of the most popular free-time activities in Australia and many people love spending their free time waiting at the end of a rod for a fish to bite on their line. There is free public access to almost all beaches, canals and coasts, which means there are plenty of great places to fish. Surfing Another popular pastime of the Australians is surfing.
