born in the United States, and were returned to China from Zoo Atlanta on Nov. 5. But the pair

still understand English belter than Chinese, and prefer American biscuits to Chinese bread.

A zoo-keeper said that his main concern is that the pair are so addicted to American biscuits that everything they eat — from bamboos to apples — has to be mixed with biscuits. They even want to snack on ( 零食 ) biscuits when drinking water.

The zoo -keeper is trying to wean them off their biscuit habit, gradually replacing the American food with Chinese bread. Mei Huan is adapting, but Mei Lun doesn't want to touch the unfamiliar bread.

Mei Lun is the livelier of the two, often jumping onto the roof and hanging upside down from a rail, but her slightly younger sister Mei Huan is calmer, preferring to sit still, observe her new environment and occasionally snack on bamboo.

A language barrier is also reported. While the pair respond to their own names, and

understand some English phrases such as “ come here,on'tunderstand”they dthe Sichuan dialect of Chinese.

The news caused some laughter on Chinese social media, with some users commenting that

the pandas would soon get used to Sichuan's famously spicy cuisine.

根据第一段中的“ butare struggling to adapt to the language and food”可知,这对双胞胎熊猫回国后适应语言和食物都很费力、困难,尤其是后面的2,3,4 段更细节

根据第四段中的“ gradually replacing the American food with Chinese bread

The zoo-keeper is trying to wean them

off their biscuit habit的”意思肯定是饲养员正试图让他们戒掉吃美国饼干的习惯,故此处的

wean them off 就可以断定为“去除”的意思,选A。

Mei Lun is the livelier of the two, often ju mping onto

the roof and hanging upside down from a rail, but her slightly younger sister Mei Huan is calmer,

preferring to sit still

Given the recent interest in green buildings in the media, let's think differently. Instead of focusing

on increasing the supply of energy, what if we focus on reducing demand?

Can we start with ending the open-door practice of street-front shops? While cool air from these

shops is refreshing to pedestrians, it carries a cost. Energy is used in the air conditioning process.

So it must be possible to look for changes in regulations that would encourage more energy-

saving designs. For instance, if we fix ceiling fans, air-conditioning homes could surely be avoided

for part of the year. Ceiling fans use far less energy. They were in a year air conditioners could

stay if ceiling fans were fixed.

In homes built under the small-house policy in New Territories, the ceiling may be too low for

ceiling fans. If the 9-meter maximum building height regulation were relaxed, ceiling fans could

be fixed to reduce energy use. Current thinking in sustainable building design and operation

involves integrated( 协调统一的 ) design, that is, bring together all parties to create a building with

better performance that achieves energy reduction.

For integrated design to succeed, all parties must come together and think beyond each person's

circle of influence. Better solutions are impossible to avoid with integrated design. Buildings would

no longer be engineered after the basic architecture was built. Positive project outcomes may

include reduced air-conditioning load, reduced power use for electric lighting, and

a reduction in the amount of materials used.

We need to ask if we are ready to look beyond our own small circles and seek an improved

approach to building design. By that I mean an integrated design resulting in more sustainable

buildings.

(1) What's the author's attitude towards the open-door practice of the street shops?

A. Supportive.

B. Disapproving.

C. Optimistic.

D. Uncaring.

(2) Why does the author suggest fixing ceiling fans?

A. To follow an old practice.

B. To help reduce energy use.

C. To completely replace air conditioners.

D. To help cut down on daily expenses.

(3) What's the key to making sustainable buildings a reality?

A. All parties should get started at the same time.

B. The basic architecture should be finished first.

C. Proper design and performance to achieve energy reduction.

D. Seeking the small-house policy and some successful architects.

(4) What would be the best title for the text?

A. Waste less, live better

B. Goodbye, air conditioning

C. How to reduce the energy cost

D. Green buildings call for integrated design

【答案】(1) B

(2) B

(3) C

(4) D

Can we start with ending the open-door practice of street-front

shops? While cool air from these shops is refreshing to pedestrians, it carries a cost. Energy

is used in the air conditioning process.

根据第三段if we fix ceiling fans, air-conditioning homes could surely be

avoided for part of the year. Ceiling fans use far less energy.

( Positive project outcomes may include reduced air-conditioning load, reduced power

use for electric lighting, and a reduction in the amount of materials used.

Watching wooden dolls come to life may not be one of the most popular forms of

If you want to convince the boss you deserve a pay rise or promotion, the solution could be simple —eat the same food as they do. Psychologists have discovered managers are much more likely to instantly trust us if we choose the same dishes as them.

During experiments, discussions over wages and work conditions were much more successful if both sides chose to snack on the same treats. And shoppers were much more likely to buy a product advertised on TV by someone eating a similar food to them at the time.

The reason is thought to be so - called similarity attraction theory---where people tend to like others who have similar tastes or habits to themselves. But this is believed to be one of the first studies highlighting the role of food in this relationship. Researchers at Chicago University in the

US conducted a series of experiments to examine food's role in earning trust.

In a test, participants were told to watch TV --- where someone pretending to be a member

of the public praised a certain product. The volunteers were given Kit Kat bars to nibble, while

the TV people ate either a Kit Kat or grapes as they talked.

The results showed viewers were much more likely to express an interest in buying the product

if the TV showed the other person eating a Kit Kat too.

The researchers added,“ Although similarity in food consumption is not a sign of whether two people will get along, we find consumers treat this as such. They feel more trusting of those who consume as they do. It means people can immediately begin to feel friendship and develop a bond, leading to smoother transactions from the start.”

Harley Street psychologist Dr Lucy Atcheson said it was already known that wearing similar clothes could instantly create trust. But this was the first report that food had the same effect.

She said,“ This is really interesting. It makes sense as people feel they have common ground and can trust the other person. That means nego tiations are more likely to be successful.”(1) According to the passage, customers are likely to buy a product from a dealer who.

A. has the same taste as them

B. advertises his products on TV

C. reduces the price of his products

D. pays attention to the quality of his products

(2) The experiments conducted by researchers at Chicago University show that.

A. food plays an important role in earning people's trust

B. bosses like employees that have

the same taste as them

C. people who have similar tastes to their boss's earn more

D. people have less interest in buying products advertised on TV

(3) What can be inferred from the passage?

A. People who eat similar food are more likely to trust each other.

B. People will get along

with each other if they like to eat similar things,

C. The effect of wearing similar clothes hasn't been proved by researchers.

D. People are more likely to make friends with those wearing the same clothes as them.

(4) Which of the following sayings can be an example of the similarity attraction theory?

A. Honesty is the best policy.

B. All good things come to an end.

C. Birds of a feather flock together.

D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

【答案】(1) A

A young woman sits alone in a café sipping tea and reading a book. She pauses briefly to write

in a nearby notepad before showing her words to a passing café waiter: "Where are the toilets please?" This is a familiar scene in Tokyo's so-called "silent caf é s",where customers are not

allowed to speak, and only communicate by writing in notepads.

The concept rises by a desire to be alone among young Japanese, a situation brought by

economic uncertainty, a shift in traditional family support structures and the growing social

isolation. The phenomenon is not limited to coffee shops but covers everything from silent discos,

where participants dance alone wearing wireless headphones connected to the DJ, to products

such as small desk tents designed for conversation-free privacy in the office. One Kyoto company

even offers single women the opportunity to have a "one woman wedding"—a full bridal affair,

complete with white dress and ceremony, and the only thing missing is the groom. The trend has

its own media expression-“ botchi-zoku ”referring, to individuals who consciously choose to do

things completely on their own.

One recent weekday afternoon, Chihiro Higashikokubaru, a 23-year-old nurse, travelled 90

minutes from her home,to Tokyo on her day off in order to enjoy some solo time. Speaking

quietly at the entrance of the cafe, Miss Higashikokubaru said: “ Iheard about this place via

Twitter and I like the idea of coming here. I work as a nurse and it's always very busy. There are

very few quiet places in Tokyo, and it's a big busy city. I just want to come and sit somewhere

quietly on my own. I'm going to drink a cup of tea and maybe do some drawings. I like the idea of

a quiet, calm atmosphere.”

The desire to be isolated is not a new concept in Japan, home to an estimated 3.6 million

"hikikomori" - a more extreme example of social recluses( 隐士 ) who withdraw completely from

society.

(1) What is special about the "silent cafes"?

A. It provides various tea and books.

B. It has attracted many popular young people.

C. It offers service by writing not by speaking.

D. People are not allowed to communicate.

(2) Which of the following statement can't account for the idea of being alone in Japan?

A. Unstable economic situation

B. A change in traditional family support pattern

C. The rising

demand for privacy D. The increasing social isolation

(3) What do we know about Higashikokubaru?

A. She doesn't like to be a nurse.

B. She doesn't like the life in big cities.

C. She travelled to Tokyo on her work days.

D. She enjoys her solo time in a quiet place.

(4) What is the best title of the passage?

A. Lonely Japanese

B. One woman wedding

C. Social recluses in Japan

D. Silent cafes

Taxi-booking app Uber agreed to sell its business in China to Didi Chuxing. The two firms had

been fierce competitors, but Didi Chuxing had controlled the Chinese market with an 87% share.

Uber China launched in 2014, but it had failed to make any profit for a long time. Cheng Wei,

founder and chief executive of Didi Chuxing, said the two companies had learned a great deal from

each other over the past two years in China. He added that the deal would set the mobile

transportation industry on a healthier path of growth at a higher level. As part of the deal, Mr.

Cheng would join the board of Uber, while Uber chief executive Travis Kalanick would also join

Didi's board.

Uber's China business would own its separate branding while US-based Uber Technologies

would hold about 17.5% in the combined company. Didi Chuxing is backed by Chinese Internet

giants Tencent and Alibaba.

Uber had been struggling to break into the Chinese market despite having Chinese search engine

Baidu as an investor. Last February, the company admitted it was losing more than $1

billion a year in China. “ Fundingtheir Chinese dreams was becoming too expensive for Uber, ”

Duncan Clark, chairman of Beijing- based consultancy BDA, told the BBC. Travis Kalanick said,

“ As businessman, I've learned that being successful is about listening to your head as well as

following your heart.”

The fierce competition had led both companies to spend much more on their journeys. The

combination is likely to see fewer such subsidies(补贴).“ One thing to watch carefully is how

quickly consumers feel the impact as subsidies are withdrawn.” Mr. Clark added.

The deal with Didi Chuxing came just days after China had agreed to provide a legal

framework for taxi-ordering apps. Both Uber and Didi welcomed the decision. The new rules took

effect last November and could, among other things, forbid such platforms to operate below cost.

(1) According to the second paragraph, what can we know?

A. Being successful is about listening to your head and following your heart.

B. The deal

would make the mobile transportation industry grow much faster.

A. Uber sold Chinese business to Didi Chuxing

B. Using Didi Chuxing brings more subsidies

C. Listen to your head and follow your heart

D. The new rules took effect last November

(3) What is the impact of the fierce competition between Uber and Didi?

A. Uber dominated the Chinese market with an 87% share.

B. China provided a legal

framework for taxi-ordering apps.

C. Funding their Chinese dreams became expensive for Uber.

D. Chinese search engine Baidu

became an investor of Uber's.

I visited Copenhagen for the first time last Easter. As a student , I'm always strapped for cash ,so I assumed I could only afford to breathe the air — but luckily everything about Copenhagen is breathtaking.

I was staying in an Airbnb, and rented a bike so I could cover more ground. One of the first places I visited was the Rundetaarn, or “ round tower ”built in the 17th century as an astronomical observatory. It has an equestrian staircase (a wide set of stairs big enough for horses to use) that went on and on. As I was going up, I stopped to visit the tower's library hall. At the

top, there's a glass platform that gives a view 80-foot straight down, as well as a bell loft. Luckily, the views over Copenhagen from the top were well worth the climb.

After coming down, I hiked up to the Kastellet Fortress to see the famous Little Mermaid statue. Taking a photo with her was almost impossible with all the tourists crowding around —but sitting there and hearing the lapping waves of the deep blue Baltic Sea, waiting for the sun to set, was an unforgettable and calming experience.

The next day, I visited the Glyptotek art museum, exploring the grand exhibits. I looked into the marble eyes of many Roman gods , and walked down dimly lit staircases to see mummies from Egypt.

Before I unwillingly boarded the train back to the airport, I told myself that I must visit again — to experience the thrills of Tivoli Gardens, try more of the street food and everything else from this amazing city.

These days, I walk down the steps leading toward the south end of the All England Club in

Wimbledon, and still look for the Crow's Nest, a small green observation tower with an outer ladder

that I used to climb on for a wide view of the grounds, but which has since been knocked down.

The Crow's Nest was a particularly useful point, because it allowed a tennis writer to keep

track of the action on as many as 10 outside courts at a time. At days end, reporters from

different nations would share notes on what they had observed all over the grounds.

Twenty-seven years later, the press room has touch screens that allow us to watch live videos

from any court, and even go back to watch key moments in key matches long after they have

finished. You could cover Wimbledon without leaving your seat. But that is a bit like spending all your

time ordering room service and looking up fun facts on Wikipedia.

More than at any other tennis tournament, there is also an appetite for stories that deal

with the setting, the history and the traditions.

If they change the price of the fish tacos ( 鱼肉卷饼 ) at the United States Open, it's not a story. If

they change the price of the strawberries and cream, the signature treat at Wimbledon. It's time to

email your editor using capital letters.

The new retractable ( 可伸缩的 ) roof was put in place in 2009. Until then, you always had to

have a rainy-day story in your notebook because there were no guarantees any matches would

be played. Now tennis is a sure thing on Centre Court, which has made tennis reporters a bit less

creative. But at least it guarantees us daily access to the most atmospheric place in the sport.

So much has changed, but Centre Court remains true to its original spirit: more a theater than a

stadium. Catching that feeling is part of covering Wimbledon, too.

(1) What did the author do on the Crow's Nest in the past?

A. He made friends with reporters.

B. He reported on tennis matches.

C. He appreciated the beautiful scenery.

D. He exchanged experiences with tennis players.

(2) What does the author think of the new way of covering Wimbledon?

A. It lacks fun.

B. It is expensive

C. It is not convenient.

D. It is not quick enough

(3) Why does the author mention strawberries and cream?

A. To compare popular foods.

B. To introduce the typical treat at Wimbledon.

C. To describe people's craze for traditional dishes.

D. To show the traditions of Wimbledon

are an attraction.

(4) What difference does the new roof make?

A. Audiences have easier access to a tennis court.

B. There's less fun in watching Wimbledon

indoors.

C. Reporters are struggling to find original material.

D. rainy-day stories about Wimbledon

have become history.

【答案】(1) B

(2) A

(3) D

Customers who come into the Waffle House recognize server Evoni Williams, a soft-spoken 18-

year-old from Texas City. It all started with a Facebook post. On the morning of March 3, Laura

Wolf was eating breakfast at the Waffle House in La Marque when she overheard an older man,

who reminded her of her late father, tell Williams he had trouble with his hands. The man, later

identified as regular customer Adrien Charpentier, had an oxygen tank nearby and needed help

cutting up his food.“ Without hesitation,” Wolf wrote, Williams“ took his plate and began cutti up his ham.”

Impressed, Wolf posted the moment on her Facebook page to share the warmth and kindness

10.理解

Last week, Vodafone started a test of the UK's first full 5G service, available for use by

businesses in Salford. It is part of its plan to trial the technology in seven UK cities. But what can we

expect from the next generation of mobile technology?

One thing we will see in the preparation for the test is lots of tricks with the new tech. Earlier

this year, operators paid almost £ 1.4 billion for the 5G wavelengths, and to compensate for that cash, they will need to catch the eye of consumers. In September, Vodafone used its bit of the

range to display the UK's first hologram ( 全息 ) call. The Manchester City captain Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram in Newbury. It isn't all holograms, however: 5G will offer faster internet access, with Ofcom ( 英国通讯管理局 ) suggesting that video that takes a minute to download on

4G will be available in just a second.

The wider application is to support connected equipment on the "internet of things" -not

just the internet-enabled fridge that can reorder your milk for you, but the network that will enable driverless cars and delivery drones ( 无人机 ) to communicate with each other.

Prof William Webb has warned that the technology could be a case of the emperor's new clothes. Much of the speed increase, he claims, could have been achieved by putting more money in the 4G network, rather than a new technology. Other different voices have suggested that a focus on rolling out wider rural broadband access and addressing current network coverage would be more beneficial to the UK as a whole.

Obviously, 5G will also bring a cost to consumers. It requires a handset for both 5G and 4G, and the first 5G-enabled smart phones are expected in the coming year. With the slow pace of network rollout so far, it is likely that consumers will end up upgrading to a new 5 G phone well before 5 G becomes widely available in the next couple of years.

(1) Why does Prof William Webb say "the technology could be a case of the emperor's new clothes"?

A. He is in favor of the application of the new technology.

B. 5G will bring a cost to consumers in their daily life.

C. 5G helps people communicate better with each other.

D. He prefers more money to be spent on 4G networks.

( 2) The underlined word "addressing" in the fourth paragraph has the closest meaning to________.

A. making a speech to

B. trying to solve

C. managing to decrease

D. responding to

(3) The last paragraph indicates that.

A. it'll take several years .to make 5G accessible to the public in the UK

B. 5G service shows huge development potential and a broad market

C. customers are eager to use 5G smart phones instead of 4G ones

D. it's probable that 5G network rollout is speeding up in Britain

(4) What do we know about the text?

A. Vodafone is successful in spreading the 5G service.

B. Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram by 4G.

C. The application of 5G will make life much easier.

D. 5G phones are available in rural areas of the UK.

【答案】( 1) D

As a volunteer teacher, I moved into an apartment with eagerness. Sorting all the necessary paperwork out, I got ready to start my work. Great, or so I thought. At 4 a.m. and at several intervals after that, I was rudely awaken by the cock that lives opposite me. Fantastic! I now have 5 extra alarms every morning.

In the following weeks, I also started to notice a trend. Things in my flat started to break at the rate of one object per day, like the hot water line, bowls, cups, shower, doors or glass shelves. Yes, I am clumsy but things just fell apart. If it wasn't broken, it would either be dirty or missing. Using

my washing basket for the first time was pretty disgusting. When I took out my clothes, they were swiftly followed by a hundred or so bugs that were living in the bottom.

As for the general Lack of equipment in the hose, there was no oven. tin opener, or sharp knives. It turns out making a vegetarian burger from scratch wasn't the best idea. I had a small microwave and a grill. I thought the general understanding was never to put metal in a microwave but I went on. Smoke soon started to appear. I'm not quite sure if it was the burger or

the grill but as soon as I opened the door, the electricity cut out, I spent the fallowing 10

minutes in a dark, smoky room hunting for the power switch using the light from my mobile

phone, which broke the week after and left me without a connection to the outer world.

Luckily, I'm now borrowing a phone and my luck has returned. No more things have broken

(probably because there is nothing left to break). I am learning how to adapt to life with limited,

broken utensils ( 用具 ).

As the days get shorter and the chilly weather rolls in, we all want to curl up in a blanket and hibernate until spring rolls around. But making time to get outside in the sun, even when it's cold out, could have bigger mood benefits than you might realize.

While the link between sunshine and mental health is nothing new, new research from Brigham Young University(BYU) has shown that the association may be even stronger than previously realized. It finds that sunlight exposure is by far the greatest weather-related factor determining mental health outcomes. In other words: more sunshine, more happiness.

For the study, a psychologist, a physicist and a statistician from BYU teamed up to compare daily environmental data from the university's Physics and Astronomy Weather Station with emotional health data archived by day for 16,452 adult therapy patients who were being treated at the BYU Counseling and Psychological Services Center.

Exposure to sunlight is a significant factor in seasonal affective disorder. Research has

shown that the brain produces more of the feel-good neurotransmitter serotonin on sunny days

than it does on darker days. What's more, lack of sunlight is linked with lower vitamin D levels, which in turn has been correlated with depression and low energy.

If you're getting enough sun, your emotions should remain relatively stable, the researchers found. But as the amount of sunlight in the day is reduced, levels of emotional pain can soar. Other weather variables including temperature, pollution and rain were not found to have an impact on mental health.

"We were surprised that many of the weather and pollution variables we included in the study were not significantly correlated with clients' scores on the distress measure once we had accounted for suntime," Dr. Mark Beecher, a professor of psychology at the university and the study's lead author, told The Huffington Post. "People tend to associate rainy days, pollution, and other meteorological phenomena with sadness or depression, but we did not find that."

(1) What does the author suggest we do in Paragraph 1?

A.Realized the benefits of sunshine.

B.Avoid hibernating in springtime.

C.Curl up in a blanket in cold weather.

D.Enjoy sunshine even in cold weather.

(2) The underlined word "soar" in Paragraph 5 most probably means ""?

A.Rise sharply.

B.Vary unstably.

C.Drop slightly.

D.Change greatly.

(3) What does the passage say about the research done by BYU?

(4) What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Lower vitamin D levels are helpful in keeping us energetic

B.The research findings are inconsistent with the popular belief.

C.The more sunshine we get, the less excited we are likely to feel.

D.The link between sunshine and mental health was unknown before.

【答案】( 1) D

(2) A

(3) C

(4) B

United States health officials are urging people to stop using electronic cigarettes, known as e-cigarettes. The call to action came after such products were linked to health problems. Five deaths have also been reported. E-cigarettes are a popular substitute for smoking products. The

electronic devices heat liquid that includes flavoring, nicotine and other chemicals into vapor — very small particles that users breathe in. Nicotine is found in many plants, including tobacco. E-cigarettes or similar devices also can provide THC or other substances to users. THC is the natural chemical present in marijuana( 大麻 ) plants that gives users the mental state known as a "high".

E-cigarettes are said to be safer than normal cigarettes because they do not create the cancer-causing byproducts of burning tobacco. Yet health officials say e-cigarette users have reported shortness of breath and other breathing problems, such as coughing and chest pain. Some have been sick to the stomach, felt very tired, suffered weight loss or developed high body temperatures. One report noted that most of the 53 illnesses reported in Illinois and Wisconsin

were related to THC vaping(气化 ) products. But nearly 20 percent of the patients inhaled( 吸

入)substances like nicotine from e-cigarettes. Most of the reported cases were of young men.

The report found that, "Since no single product or substance has been associated with the illness, persons should consider not using e-cigarettes while this investigation is ongoing." Last November, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, reported that "e-cigarette use increased considerably among U.S. middle and high school students during 2017 —2018." Among high school students, it found e-cigarette use rose from 220,000 students in 2011 to 3.05 million in 2018.

On Monday, the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA gave a warning to JUUL Labs, maker of the best-selling e-cigarettes. The FDA accused the company of illegally marketing its products as being "safer than cigarettes" without the agency's approval. In a statement, the FDA's acting commissioner said that, "JUUL has ignored the law, and has made some of these statements in school to our nation's youth." A JUUL spokesman said the company is studying the FDA's comments and "will fully cooperate".

(1) Which of the following can best describe e-cigarettes?

A.Deadly.

B.Harmless.

C.Infectious.

D.Effective.

(2) What change will be caused when smokers inhale e-cigarettes containing THC?

A.They will be healthier.

B.They will lose weight.

C.They will feel excited.

D.They will be peaceful.
