Strip width measurement with optical
sensors - insensitive to ambient light EMG Automation GmbH
does have many years of experi-
ence and expertise in the devel-opment and application of strip guiding systems and strip width measurements for the metals industry.
With regard to strip width meas-urement EMG relies on the quality and performance of the existing digital measuring sensors from the strip guiding area. By steady deve-lopments EMG made those tools suitable to meet the diverse requests.
EMG offers a wide range of system solutions: From optical measur-ing systems that are insensitive
to ambient light through mainte-nance-free inductive measuring technology up to stationary cam-era systems.
Advantages of the EMG strip width measurement are:
? precise and reliable
measuring accuracy
? short start-up time
? high availability
? ease of operation
? most up to date Feldbus
technology
? high efficiency Detecting the strip edge is realized on each side of the strip by HF alternating light measuring sensors being insensitive to ambient light. These are mounted on motor driven slides and are programmed as to steadily follow the strip edge. The absolute distance between the slides and the built-on measuring system is con-tinuously determined via a mounted digital stroke transducer.
In addition to this dynamic strip position changes are sensed in the measuring equipment and taken account of when calculating the strip width. Thus the strip width is genuinely determined in any operating condi-tion.
By using the reference measuring principle a high amount of contamination is compensated during system operation. While the measuring sensor is detecting the lateral position of the strip edges, the reference sensor is measuring the background brightness of the measur-ing spot in order to stabilize the signal sensitivity. Influences of reflected light from external sources are excluded by the use of high-frequent light transmitters. Light of a defined frequency is emitted under control and only this part of light is evaluated in the HF alter-nating light transmitters. The light transmitter is also monitored for failure.
For applications where a very high precision is demanded optimised sensor positioners with highest stroke resolu-tion and exact linear sliding properties are used.
