Anyone who experienced wet weather this summer will not be surprised to learn that this was the fourth year running that the UK had suffered from a wet summer, which has never happened before in modern rainfall records dating back to 1914.

This summer was only slightly wetter than usual, though—the UK had 248.5 mm (9-78 inches) summer rainfall,10 percent above average, according to Met Office figures. The rainfall average over the whole country showed an interesting weather picture, though. The rain tended to come down in big showers, setting off flash floods. As a result, East Anglia in eastern UK had its third wettest August with more than double the normal rainfall, and the South East had one of its dullest Augusts, with only two-thirds its usual sunshine. And yet both these areas had been dry and sunny from January to May and seemed to be heading for long-lasting drought. Western and northwestern areas had the complete opposite, though—extremely wet in July, followed by a dry August.

Remarkably, the North West had suffered from such long-lasting drought that it led to bans(禁令) on using hosepipes (软水管). Although some weather companies forecast(预报) an extremely hot barbecue summer, it was only 0.6°C above average across the UK. Even so, for the first half of this summer Glastonbury enjoyed a mud-free festival and Wimbledon remained hot and dry. It might not have broken any temperature records, but there were plenty of barbecues this summer.

31. T here was a lot of rainfall this August in ______.

A. East Anglia

B. western UK

C. northwestern UK

D. Wimbledon

32. What made the South East seem to have long-lasting drought?

A.The small amount of sunshine in August.

B. The wettest August of the third year running.

C.The extremely hot weather with too much rainfall.

D.The continuous five months of dry and sunny weather.

33. What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the passage?

A. People in Glastonbury celebrated a mud festival freely.

B. Some weather companies did not give a correct forecast.

C. The temperature this summer was much higher than average.

D. The extremely hot weather this summer led to fewer barbecues.

Do you have a good sense of direction? If not, please take with you a compass. But if you forget to take a compass, you can still find your way.

It’s never a good idea to imagine that the family member who was entrusted with the job of map-reading actually knows where the family is. You can tell by the slightly confused look on their faces that nothing on the ground seems to match the map. Never mind. The sun is shining and it’s still morning. If you don’t know the exact time, you can still find out where south is, but you’ll need to be patient.

①Find a straight stick and put it in the ground in a place where you can mark its shadow.

②Try to position the stick as vertically(垂直) as you can. You can check this by making a simple plumb line(铅锤线) with a piece of string and weight. You haven’t got any string? OK, use a thread from your clothes with a button tied at the end to act as a weight.

③Mark the end of the shadow cast by the stick.

④Wait about half an hour and mark the end of the shadow again.

⑤Keep doing this until you have made several marks.

⑥The mark nearest the stick will represent(代表) the shortest shadow, which is cast at midday, when the sun is highest in the sky and pointing to the exact south.

⑦Pick a point in the distance along the line between the shortest shadow and the stick.

⑧That point is south of where you are.

⑨Now you can turn the map, like you did before, and find which way you should be travelling.

37. To find the direction, we need to be patient because __________.

A. it is not easy to find a proper stick

B. it is not easy to position the stick

C. it takes hours to make the marks

D. it takes about half an hour to make the marks

38. The passage may be most helpful to __________.

A. those who draw maps

B. those who get lost

C. those who make compasses

D. those who do experiments

39. Which of the following pictures best shows the way of finding the direction of south?

40. The author presents this passage by __________.

A. telling an interesting story

B. describing an activity in a lively way

C. testing an idea by reasoning

D. introducing a practical method

5 Tips for Surviving Shots

Do shots make you nervous? 41 Lots of people are afraid of them because they have a very real fear of needles. So next time your doctor asks you to roll up your sleeve, try these tips.

Distract yourself while you’re waiting.

Bring along a game, book, music, or a movie player—something you’ll get completely caught up in. 42

Concentrate on taking slow, deep breaths.

Breathe all the way down into your stomach. 43 Moreover, concentrating on something other than the shot can take your mind off it.

44 Find a picture, poster,or a sign on the wall. Concentrate on the details. If you're looking at a painting, for example, try counting the number of flowers in the

garden, cows in the field, or other images. Or create as many new words as you can using the lettering on a sign. Think about how the message on a health awareness poster might affect you. Whatever it takes, keep focusing on something other than the shot until it’s ove r.

Cough.

Research shows that coughing as the needle goes in can help some people feel less pain.

Relax your arm.

If you're tense---especially if you tense up in the area where you're getting the shot, it can make a shot hurt more.

Sometimes people feel dizzy(头晕的) after getting a shot. 45
