My parents moved to Mississippi when my brother and I were small children, and we were separated from our Oklahoma grandparents by some 600 miles. This geographic distance allowed us to only visit our grandparents once a year, either at Christmas or during summer vacation.

Most of my classmates lived near their grandparents, and I would routinely hear

stories of extended families(大家庭)regularly spending time with one another, fishing at “grandpa’s” house or going over to “grandma’s” for her famous fried chicken. We were disappointed that we did not get to spend more time with our grandparents, but our love for them remained deep and strong.

We always expected a road trip to Oklahoma. We would count the days, and when the day came, the entire family would pile into the car at four o’clock in the morning. Crossing the Mississippi River into Louisiana, the landscapes (风景)changed. Crossing the Red River in Oklahoma, we were in a foreign world.

Every trip to see my grandparents can’t be without bringing delight. We jumped out of the car in their driveway to be met with bear hugs. My grandparents wanted to know everything about their grandchildren, and we would sit for hours and tell story after story. Grandma had a meal planned, and you could bet she fixed her grandsons’ favorite foods. Of course the best part of the visit was that we were able to do whatever we wanted without punishment from our grandparents. Grandma and Grandpa always had presents for us, neat scenic trips planned and lovely surprises, such as the time we got to go to a local restaurant and eat the world’s largest hamburger.

24. The family don’t visit the grandparents often because _________.

A. they seldom have a vacation

B. they have a bad attitude to them

C. they are all busy with their work

25 When hearing his classmates’ stories, the author _________.

A. often felt deep sorrow

B. would call his grandparents

C. felt a bit jealous at heart

D. would feel sorry for his poor life

26. Whenever the author and his brother met their grandparents, they ________.

A. were all full of great excitement

B. found they were in a foreign world

C. shared cooking skills with each other

D. seemed not to be familiar with each other

27.What can we infer from the author’s story?

A. Distance can’t break the bond of love.

B. Physical separation hurts the heart deeply.

C. Distance leads to the most beautiful scene.

D. Family life is filled with love and understanding.

You asked us why people don’t smile in old photographs. Technology is partly to blame. The Daguerreotype, the first widely used photographic process, was invented in 1839. The exposure time in those early days was really long, sometimes lasting up to 15 minutes or so — a way too long to hold a smile. But that timing was cut down pretty quickly, so there was more at play here than just the tech.

Although it was less expensive than having you painted, getting your picture taken still wasn’t cheap. Some people had just one photo taken their whole entire life. That made the event a pretty important and formal deal. Unlike portrait(人像)painters, photog raphers weren’t trying to catch an instant in their subjects' lives, but more of an ideal of that person. Plus, back in the day, people just didn’t say “cheese”.

It wasn’t until the turn of the 20th century when cameras became portable and easier to use that pictures turned into casual snapshots(快照), and smiles became more common. Now, we can’t get enough of those pearly whites.

★Submitted by W. Kristian

I think they did not care if they smiled as long as they got to take the picture since it was expensive.

★Submitted by V. Jazmine

I always wondered why people didn’t smile in old photos. Finally I know that answer to it by reading this article. Thank goodness that we don’t have to wait fifteen minutes to take a picture any more. Now we can take a picture easily and have a pretty smile on our face.

★Submitted by Jacob

In 1839, people didn’t smile because the exposure time would sometimes last up to fifteen minutes. Due to the new camera’s efficiency(效率), people smiled more often. I love the new cameras. They are a cool way to capture a moment in my life.

B. failed to keep on smiling

C. didn’t know how to smile

D. were too scared to show a smile

A. It was cheap.

B. People didn’t pose for it.

C. People took it seriously.

D. It aimed to reflect the subjects’ lives.

30. By “Now, we can’t get enough of those pearly whites”, the author means ________.

A. now there’s still lack of smiles in photos

B. now more people are smiling in photos

C. now taking photos is more common for people

D. now cameras are easier for people to get and use

31. Where does the text probably come from?

A. A website.

B. A book review.

Being bored can encourage people's creativity—partly to escape the horrible, frustrated, and meaningless feeling of boredom—recent studies find it could even be true at work.

Psychologists at the University of Central Lancashire had participants copy numbers out of the telephone book for 15 minutes, while others went straight into a standard creativity task. Both groups were asked to come up with as many different uses as they could for a plastic cup. The group that felt more bored came up with more uses.

Dr. Sandi Mann, one of the study's authors said. " Boredom at work has always been seen as something to be removed, but perhaps we should be welcoming it in order to encourage our creativity. What we want to do next is to see what the practical implications of this finding are. Do people who are bored at work become more creative in other areas of their work or do they go home and write novels?"

In a later study, Dr. Sandi Mann found that creativity was reduced when people were still bored but didn't have the chance to daydream. While we tend to think of boredom as something that certainly leads to trouble-drinking, gambling and antisocial behavior, this research suggests different possibilities.

More than anything, the feeling of boredom is a strong signal t hat we are stuck in some kind of rut and we need to seek out new goals. In the study above, this research led participants to new https://www.wendangku.net/doc/1c12487057.html,ually people will do anything to avoid being bored, as it's such an aversive experience. But creative people, like writers, sometimes talk about seeking out boredom.

Here is the comedy writer Graham Linehan talking about boredom to The Cuardian. "I have to use all these programs that cut off the Internet, force me to be bored, because being bored is an essential part of writing, and the Internet has made it very hard to be bored. The creative process requires a period of boredom ,of being stuck. That's actually a very uncomfortable period that a lot of people mistake for writer's block, but it's actually just part of a long process. "So, when you start to feel bored , instead of glancing at your smartphone ,try being bored for a bit. Who knows what creative thought might come from it?

32.From the study of Dr. Sandi Mann, we can learn that__________ .

A. boring tasks make people creative

B. daydreaming may increase creativity

C. plastic cups can be used very creatively

D. copying numbers might be very interesting

33. The underlined word "aversive" in Paragraph 5 probably means __________

A. common .

B. unpleasant

C. unusual

D. personal

34. According to Graham Linehan,___________

A. glancing at a smartphone is a solution.

B. he is forced to feel bored by the Internet

C. the boredom period is a block for writers

D. being stuck for a period benefits him a lot

35. What is the author's attitude towards boredom?

A. Critical

B. Cautious

C. Positive

D. Unclear

It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents.

36 They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways, that they are too serious and too strict with their children, and that they seldom give their children a free hand.

It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust and they always forget how they themselves felt when young.

37 It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Adults worry more easily. Most of them plan things ahead.

Young people make their parents angry with their choices in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble: It is just that they feel cut off from the adult’s world, and they have not yet been accepted into their world. 38 And if their parents do not like their music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make the young people very happy.

Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say “yes” to what you do. 39 It is natural enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were comple tely under your parents’ control.

40 If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will give you the right to do what you want to do.

A. They say that their parents don’t understand them.

B. Young people like to live with their parents.

C. All you want is to be left alone and do what you like.

D. Young people like to act without much thinking.

E. If you plan to control your life, you’d better win your parents.

F. That’s why young people want to make a new culture of their own.

G. Parents should understand young people.
