第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)ks;5u

阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、B、C和D中,选出最佳选项。

A good hearing memory will help your child do better in school. Your child's hearing ability is normal. Yet, he may seem to be very poor at remembering and understanding what he's heard at school.

Why should this be? It's because he's not using his hearing ability to help him remember and understand what he's been taught.

Some children get into the habit of learning and remembering things by what they hear. They've got good hearing memories. Other children find it easier to learn and remember things by what they see. They've got good seeing memories. Some children have equally good ability at both seeing and hearing in learning things. Others, less fortunate, seem to have poor bearing and seeing memories. Most children, I'd say, unknowing ly prefer one method over the other for learning and remembering.

But this favoring of one sense over the other is a bad habit and deprives (使……不能) the child of the full use of his natural senses.

Mrs Alien was clearly incredulous when I told her there was nothing wrong with her son's hearing. "But he never seems to really understand what he hears, that's what his teachers tell me," she said.

"My psychological examination of William shows he's weak in his hearing memory," I said, "but he has perfectly normal intelligence and can learn in school."

"Our family doctor examined William and he says the boy's hearing was all right. So, that proves you're right on that point," admitted Mrs Alien. "So how can we help him? My husband and I will do anything you say, Dr. Dursteln."

"You can do a lot to improve William's hearing memory, but it'll take time. You must be patient and not expect results immediately." I cautioned.

I suggested a detailed program for the parents to use at home. I told Mrs Alien to come back and see me every two weeks so that I could guide her in any problem she had in using my program.

56. Those who have poor hearing memories .

A. can not hear sounds clearly

B. are poor at remembering and understanding what they have learned

C. are poor at learning things by what they have heard

D. have the habit of learning things by what they have heard of

57. The author suggested that Mrs Alien try some ways .

A. to train her son's hearing memory

B. to make use of her son's natural senses

C. to make good use of what her son heard

D. to understand the trouble in which her son was involved

58. In Paragraph 5, the underlined word "incredulous" means .

A. unbelieving

B. believable

C. believing

D.incredible

59. Which of the following is true?

A. Good hearing memory will not help your child do better in school.

B. Some children get into the habit of learning and remembering things by what they hear.

C. The favoring of one sense over the other is not a bad habit.

D. The author didn't suggest a detailed program for the parents to use at home with William.

The common cold is the world's most widespread illness, which is plagues(疫病) that flesh receives.

The most widespread fallacy(谬误) of all is that colds caused by cold. They are not. They are caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one. If cold causes colds, it would be

reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not, And in isolated Arctic regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes.

During the First World War soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches(战壕), cold and wet, showed no increased tendency to catch colds.

In the Second World War prisoners at the notorious Auschwitz Concentration Camp(奥斯维辛集中营), naked and starving, were astonished to find that they seldom had colds. At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in Experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in drafty room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose.

If, then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter? Despite the most pains-taking research, no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on.

No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain suppressors(止痛片) such as aspirin, but all they do is relieve the symptoms.

63. The writer offered examples to support his argument.

Since we are soci al beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships. One strength of the human conditions is our possibility to give and receive support from one another under stressful conditions. Social support makes up of the

exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life changes and daily problems. People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies over types of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, show that the presence of social support helps people defend themselves against illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.

Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First, friends, relatives and co-workers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others in spite of our faults and difficulties. Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Third, we typically find social companionship supportive. Taking part in free-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting(转移注意力) us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support -- money aid, material resources, and needed services – that reduces stress by helping us resolve and deal with our problems.

68. Interpersonal relationships are important because they can .

A. make people live more easily

B. smooth away daily problems

C. deal with life changes

D. cure types of illnesses

69. The researches show that people's physical and mental health .

A. lies in the social medical care systems which support them

B. has much to do with the amount of support they get from others

C. depends on their ability to deal with daily worries and troubles

70. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word "cushions"?

A. takes place of

B. makes up of

C. relieves the effect of

D. gets rid of

71. What is the subject discussed in the text?

A. Interpersonal relationships.

B. Kinds of social support.

C. Ways to deal with stress.

D. Effects of stressful conditions.

E

The word "conservation" has a thrifty (节俭) meaning. To conserve is to save and protect, to leave what we ourselves enjoy in such good condition that others may also share the enjoyment. Our forefathers had no idea that human population would increase faster than the supplies of raw materials; most of them, even until very recently, had the foolish idea that the treasures were "limitless" and "inexhaustible". Most of the citizens of earlier generations knew little or nothing about the complicated, and delicate system that runs all through nature, and which means that, as in a living body, an unhealthy condition of one part will sooner or later be harmful to all the others.

Fifty years ago nature study was not part of the school work; scientific forestry was a new idea; timber was still cheap because it could be brought in any quantity from distant woodlands; soil destruction and river floods were not national problems; nobody had yet studied long term climatic cycles in relation to proper land use; even the word "conservation" had nothing of the meaning that it has for us today.

For the sake of ourselves and those who will come after us, we must now set about repairing the mistakes of our forefathers. Conservation should, therefore, be made a part of everyone's daily life. To know about the water table in the ground is just as important to us as a knowledge of the

basic arithmetic formulas. We need to know why all watersheds need the protection of plant life and why the running current of streams and rivers must be made to benefit the soil fully before they finally escape to the sea. We need to be taught the duty of planting trees as well as of cutting them. We need to know the importance of big, mature trees, because living space for most of man's fellow creatures on this planet is figured not only in square measure of surface but also in cubic volume above the earth. In brief, it should be our goal to restore as much of the original beauty of nature as we can.

72. The author's attitude towards the present situation in the use of natural resources is .

A. positive

B. neutral

C. suspicious

D. criti cal

73. According to the author, the greatest mistake of our forefathers was that .

A. they had no idea about scientific forestry

B. they had little or no sense of environmental protection

C. they did not know the importance of nature study

D. they had no idea of how to make good use of raw materials

74. With a view to correcting the mistakes of our forefathers, the author suggests that .

A. we plant more trees

B. we be taught environmental science, as well as the science of plants

C. environmental education be directed toward everyone

D. we return to nature

75. What does the author imply by saying "living space is figured also in cubic volume above the earth" (Paragraph 3 ) ?

A. Our living space on the earth is getting smaller and smaller in volume.

B. Our living space should be measured in cubic volume.

C. We need to take some measures to protect space in volume.

D. We must create better living conditions for both birds and animals.

作文:

(One possible version)

Hello, everyone,

Now I'll tell you something about our research project The World Food Crisis on behalf of our group. As you know, food shortages have hit many countries in the world and even caused social unrest in some areas.

First, annual world grains output has declined because of climate change. Then lots of farmland has been lost due to the rapid development of industry and urbanization. Besides, faced with the rising energy prices, people have turned to the production of biofuels, which has worsened the severe situation.

Then what should we do to deal with the problem? On one hand, we should focus on the environmental protection and improve the ecology. On the other hand, strict measures should be taken to protect farmland.

As for me, I will call on the people around me to live thriftily. And for the moment, I think, we should study hard to develop science and help solve the food shortage in the future.

2021届高三下学期二月份月考试卷 英语试卷 (含答案)

2021届高三下学期二月份月考试卷 英语试卷 一、 We smile because we are happy, and we frown because we are sad.Recent studies suggest that our emotions are driven by their related facial expressions. This February psychologists at the University of Cardiff in Wales found that people whose ability to frown is lessened by botox injections(肉毒杆菌注射)are happier,on average, than people who can frown. The researchers administered an anxiety and depression questionnaire to 25females,half of whom had received botox injections to stop frowning. The botox injected people reported feeling happier and less anxious in general. In a related study from March, scientists at the Technical University of Munich found that the botox subjects had much lower activity in the brain circuits(回路)involved in emotional processing and responses—in the amygdala, hypothalamus and other parts of the brain—as compared with controls who had not received treatment. The concept works the opposite way, too.People who frown during an unpleasant procedure report feeling more pain than those who do not, according to a study published in May2008in the Journal of Pain.Researchers applied heat to the forearms of29participants,who were asked to either make unhappy, neutral or relaxed faces during the procedure. Those who exhibited negative expressions reported being in more pain than the other two groups. No one yet knows why our facial expressions influence our emotions as they seem to.The associations in our mind between how we feel and how we react may be so strong that our expressions simply end up strengthen our emotions—there may be no evolutionary reason for the connection. 1.What can we know about the result of the study from Paragraph2? A.The ability to frown should be stopped by injection. B.Less frowns make people happier. C.Women love to frown and feel sad. D.Half women have no ability to feel happy. 2.What did scientists do in the related studies?
