A trip to Paris is not complete without a visit to the Eiffel Tower. To get the most out of your visit, read our tips below:

Visit at Night

Riding up the Eiffel Tower at night and looking out over the streets of Paris, you’ll see why Paris is known as the “City of Light”. At street level, the spotlights on the top of the Tower zoom across the Paris skyline, and the reflections of the Tower in the Seine are sights not to be missed.

Purchase Your Ticket in Advance Online

Bypass the long ticket lines at the Eiffel Tower by purchasing your ticket online from the Eiffel Tower website. You’ll pick a time to visit, and then select whether to print out the ticket or display it on your phone or iPad, a convenient option if you buy your ticket in Paris without easy access to a printer.

Don’t Bring Valuable Objects with You

Before entering the Eiffel Tower, your bags will be examined by a security officer. If an item you are carrying sets off the metal detector, the officer will take you away from the line for further inspection. We’ve stood in line for hours behind people who missed their chance to go up the Eiffel Tower.

Have Drinks and Snacks at the Eiffel Tower

If you’re like us, after an exciting trip to the Eiffel Towe r, you’ll be ready to rest your legs and have a relaxing snack and a drink in a Parisian cafe. Across the Seine in the Trocadero area, there are many elegant cafes. The atmosphere is great, but the prices are in the stratosphere. Actually, the perfect place for common visitors to eat and drink is on the Eiffel Tower itself.

1. Why does the author

A. Because you can have a special sight of the city of Paris.

B. Because you can avoid the crowds and enjoy it peacefully.

2. What does the underlined word “Bypass” in Paragraph 3 mean?

Food picked up just a few seconds after being dropped is less likely to contain bacteria than if it is left for longer periods of time, according to the findings of research carried-out at Aston University’s School of Life and Health Sciences. The findings suggest there may be some scientific basis of the “5-second rule” —the belief about it being fine to eat food that has only had contact, with the floor for five seconds or less. Although people have long followed the “5-second rule”, until now it was unclear whether it actually helped.

The study, undertaken by final year Biology students and led by Anthony Hilton, Professor of Microbiology at Aston University, monitored the transfer of the common bacteria from a variety of indoor flooring types as carpet, cement floor to toast, pasta, biscuit and a sticky sweet when contact was made from

3 to 30 seconds. The results showed that: Time is a significant factor in the transfer of bacteria from a floor surface to a piece of food; and the type of flooring the food has been dropped on has an effect, with bacteria least likely to transfer from carpeted surfaces and most likely to transfer from cement flooring surfaces to moist foods making contact for more than 5 seconds. Professor Hilton said: “Consuming food dropped on the floor still carries an infection risk as it very much depends on which bacteria are present on the floor at the time.”

The Aston team also carried out a survey of the number of people who employ the “five-second rule”. The survey showed that: 87% of the people surveyed said they would eat food dropped on the floor, or already have done so. 55% of those that would, or have eaten food dropped on the floor are women. 81% of the women who would eat food from the floor would follow the “5-second rule”. Professor Hilton added, “Our study showed that a surprisingly large majority of people are hap py to consume-dropped food, with women the most likely to do so. But they are also more likely to follow the ‘5-second rule’, which our research has shown to be much than an old wives’ tale.”

4. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A. The food dropped on the cement floor is not as safe as food dropped on the carpet within 30

seconds.

B. A sticky chocolate dropped on the carpet is easier to be polluted than that dropped on the

cement floor.

C. The food dropped on the carpet shares the same potential of being polluted with the food

dropped on the cement floor.

D. A toast dropped on the carpet is easier to be polluted than that dropped on the cement floor.

5. What is the passage probably developed?

A. Space

B. Example

C. Time

D. Contrast

5. How did Professor Hilton feel after analyzing how many people chose to eat dropped food?

A. Puzzled

B. Astonished

C. Satisfied

D. Upset

7. What is the main idea of this passage?

A. The food which is dropped on the floor can be eaten safely.

B. People surveyed in the research are willing to accept the idea.

C. The bacteria have no negative effect on the safety of food.

D. A research on the safety of food dropped on the floor is undertaken.

(C)

My parents and two older brothers arrived in Queens from Cuba in 1967, squeezing into a one-bedroom apartment that got even more cramped when I showed up two years later Suspicious of everyone and unable to communicate in English, my parents were n’t about to let their kids hang out in the streets. And since they both worked, we boys spent a lot of time at home.

The main public library on Merrick Boulevard was the first place I was allowed to visit on my own. I started going there when J was eight. Everything I needed was located on what seemed to me an endless single floor. Wandering around that building aimlessly on a Saturday afternoon offered a sense of freedom I’d never experienced before.

Once my father dropped me off, it didn’t really matter what I did so long as I could explore. I find it interesting that people today say that libraries are no longer about books; they weren’t really about books for me back in the 1970s, either. It was more about being around other people who looked like they were being productive—-turning pages, making copies, patiently waiting for items. All this was attractive to me.

I felt a certain level of dignity and self-respect at the library. I didn’t borrow books from the library despite spending practically every Saturday of my childhood there. I certainly went over hundreds and hundreds of them during my walks around the building- sports, politics and the solar system were my favorite sections. But I felt no great need to bring books home. We had no room for books in our apartment anyway. I felt like a poor kid when I read books at home. I felt like everyone else when I read books at the library.

8. The underlined word “cramped” in Paragraph I probably means “______”.

A. dangerous

B. shabby

C. messy

D. crowded

9;When did the author visit the library for the first

A. in 1967

B. in 1969

C. in 1977

D. 1975

10. What did the author appreciate most about the library?

A. The atmosphere it provides.

B. The books he could explore.

C. The productive people in it.

D. The seemingly endless floor.

11. The author didn’t borrow books from the library because ______.

A. he had finished reading all the books he preferred

B. he felt like reading at the library to enjoy freedom

C. he didn’t want to lose his dignity and self-respect

D. he was too poor to afford the cost of borrowing books

12. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. How a Public Library Set Me Free

B. Culture Shock Is Never a Barrier

C. My Aimless and Boring Childhood

D. A Building Shaped a Nation’s Spirit

(D)

Some plants get so hungry that they eat flies, and even small frogs. What’s more amazing is that these plants occur naturally (in special environments) in every state. In fact, they’re found on every continent except Antarctica.

You’ve probably seen a Venus’ flytrap — a small plant, which grows 6 to 8 inches tall in a container. At the end of its stalks (莲) are leaves that act like traps. Inside each trap is a lining of tiny hairs. When an insect lands on them, the traps suddenly shut. Over the course of a week or so, the plant feeds on its catch.

The Venus’ flytrap is just one of more than 500 species of meat-eating plants, says Barry Meyers-Rice, the editor of the International Carnivorous Plant Society’s Newsletter. H e states although you might have read some science-fiction stories, no meat-eating plant does any danger to humans.

Barry says a plant is meat-eating, only if it does all font of the following: “attract, kill, digest, and absorb” some form of insects. Meat-eating plants look and act like other green plants—well, most of the time.

All green plants make sugar to produce food. What makes meat-eating plants different is their special leaves, which need insects for one reason: nitrogen. Nitrogen is a nutrient th at they can’t obtain any other way. Why?

Almost all green plants on our planet get nitrogen from the soil. Meat-eating plants can’t. They live in places where nutrients are hard to get from the soil because of its acidity. So they’ve come to rely on gettin g nitrogen from insects and small animals. In fact, nutrient-rich soil is poisonous to meat-eating plants. Never fertilize them! But don’t worry, either, if they never seem to catch any insects. They can survive, but they’ll grow very slowly.

13. According to the passage, a Venus’ flytrap ______.

A. is a small plant which grows in a container

B. is a kind of plant which gets hungry easily

C. can trap and feed on some form of insects

D. can only grow 6-8 inches tall

14. From the passage, we can infer that ______.

A. meat-eating plants are found nowhere else except Antarctica

B. all green plants get nitrogen from the soil

C. the nutrient-poor soil is beneficial to meat-eating plants

D. meat-eating plants endanger humans in science-fiction stories

15. Meat-eating plants grow very slowly, ______.

A. because it’s hard for plants to get nutrients in the soil when acidity is high.

B. simply because they can’t absorb nitrogen from the soil

C. so you’d better fertilize them

D. because green plants make sugar at night.

The idea of giving someone a puppy for Christmas provides a warm fuzzy response for most people. 16 Pets carry a lot of responsibility, but they reward their owners with years of love and devotion.

Be Realistic About How Much Time You Have

In a busy world, full of work, soccer games, and family dinners, time is more precious. Which adopting an animal it is important to consider how much time you have to devote to training and caring for it. 17

If you have plenty of extra time to devote to a pet, a puppy is a good choice.

Think About How Much Space You Have

Large dogs naturally require more room than small dogs. They need big yards to run in, or a nearby area where they can go for longer walks. If you live in a small apartment on an upper floor, this can be a problem. 18 Smaller dogs take up less space and are often easier to transport up and down stairs and in elevators. If you have a large home with a big backyard where your dog can run and play, then a larger breed may be a good fit for you.

19

If you have small children, a patient dog with a high tolerance level is necessary. Kids explore with their hands, and they are likely to touch, tug, pet, and crawl all over the new dog. In this situation, you need to choose a dog with an easygoing temperament一who will not become frustrated and bite. 20

A. Consider the Other Pets in Your Home

B. Choose the Right Dog for Your Situation

C. However, adopting a dog is not something to be taken lightly.

D. A puppy requires a lot more time and attention than an older dog.

E. Walking around a small space with a Labrador underfoot can be frustrating.

F. Adopting a dog rather than buying one benefits both the animal and your family.

G. Breeds like Golden Retrievers, Labradors, and Border Collies are well known for their family friendly attitude.

01 Passage 1 Hypnotism (催眠术) is very old. Thousands of years ago people started to use it in Egypt. The use of hypnotism has grown very much since that time. Today, doctors and scientists are in almost every country hypnotize people to help them with their problems. What is hypnotism, and how does it work? Many people think that a hypnotist puts people to sleep. Then he makes the hypnotized people do strange things. This is not what a hypnotist does. Hypnotism is really just a way to relax the mind and body. What are some of the uses of hypnotism? We go to a hypnotist because w e have a problem. The problem makes us unhappy. The hypnotist asks us to think hard about something and relax. When we are relaxed, t he hypnotist gives us some ideas to help us with our problems. Hypnotism can help people to remember things. The police sometimes ask hypnotists to help them. For example, a man sees an accident. He forgets the license number of the car he sees. If he is hypnotized he may remember it. The police can then find the car and catch the driver. People who are hypnotized can also make mistakes or say something that isn't true. People remember what they think they saw. That may not be what really happened. The police don't hypnotize people who do something wrong. Why not? People who are hypnotized may say something that isn't true. A person who has done something bad has a good reason to say something that isn't true. 1. Hypnotist helps people by ____.
