A

The Earth has warmed about 1.4oF since the late 19th century. That increase sounds small, but studies by Kerry Emmanuel at MIT and others have proved that hurricanes are getting more serious. Extreme storms like the one that flooded New England with more than 10 inches of rain in May are becoming more frequent, too. Birds are migrating earlier. Trees are blooming, and flowers and crops are popping up unseasonably early across the country.

The warming has produced clear winners: pests. Mosquitoes love the warmer weather and are celebrating by bringing infectious diseases to new places. Beetle populations have exploded in evergreen trees. Why should we care about beetles? It was beetles that killed the trees in Southern California, which provided the dry fuel for the wildfires that destroyed hundreds of homes in 2003.

Higher temperatures are also causing glaciers to melt fast. Mount Kilimanjaro, for instance, has been topped with ice for at least 11,700 years. Within the next 15 years, however, its summit might be ice-free, according to Lonnie Thompson, a glaciologist at Ohio State University. The fastest warming is taking place in the far north, where glaciers are disappearing and permafrost (永冻土) is proving to be not so permanent. You may think this isn’t connected with those of us farther south, but snow and ice play a big role in balancing Earth’s climate by reflecting sunlight back into space. As the Earth warms, melting snow and ice expose dark surfaces such as land and oceans, and the change from heat-reflecting to

heat-absorbing surfaces could lead to further warming.

56. Which of the following is NOT the result of increasing global warming?

A. Hurricanes and floods are becoming more serious and frequent.

B. More pests are being produced than before.

C. The water on the earth is becoming more and more limited.

D. Glaciers are melting faster.

57. According to this article, what’s the main function of snow and ice on the earth?

A. Watering the crops after they melt.

B. Covering the ground to keep it warm.

C. Keeping the atmosphere moist all the time.

D. Reflecting sunlight back into space to balance Earth’s climate.

58. The melting snow and ice may lead to further warming because _____.

A. there will be less snow and ice to absorb the heat

B. they expose dark surfaces which absorb heat

C. they make the atmosphere much more moist

D. they give off heat as they melt

59. Which of the following could be the title of this article?

A. The Terrible Consequences of Global Warming

B. How to Prevent Global Warming

C. People’s Behavior and Global Warming

D. Global Warming and Human Life

B

Some of the planet’s rarest and most unusual animals will be the focus of a conservation project launched today by British scientists. The plan will focus on animals traditionally overlooked by conservationists, and will allow the public to track and donate to individual projects through a new website.

Led by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), the project has identified 100 species of mammals that have the fewest relatives left alive in the wild. The 10 most endangered, including the Yangtze river dolphin and bumblebee bat, will be the focus of the first year’s work. Jonathan Baillie of ZSL said the aim was to prevent hundreds of unique species from extinction.

“We will be working to protect some of the world’s most extraordinary species, which are on the edge of extinction.”

The almost-blind Yangtze river dolphin is at the top of the list. “It’s extremely threatened. A team was recently out there looking for it and could not find one —they are truly on the edge of extinction,” said Dr. Baillie.

Many of the animals on the Edge list have been overlooked because they come from poorly-explored regions or species groups where scientists have had little interest.

Dr. Baillie said raising the animals’ general impression given to the public would be key to their future.

ZSL scientists plan to expand the project. They are working on an Edge list for the animals that can live both on land and in water, and will then move on to other groups. “There is such a gap and many people are so interested in this that it will grow quite rapidly.”

60. The purpose of the Zoological Society of London was to _____.

A. do research on plants and animals in England

B. prevent hundreds of unique species of animals from disappearing

C. keep the environment from being destroyed by people

D. call on people to pay more attention to the Yangtze river dolphin

61. In the first year, the project will mainly _____.

A. identify the rarest animals in the world

B. protect the Yangtze river dolphin and bumblebee bat

C. focus on the protection of the 10 most endangered mammals

D. work for the animals that can live both on land and in water

62. Many of the animals on the Edge list have not been given much attention because _____.

A. they are really not valuable and of little use

B. they come from poorly-explored regions or scientists have no interest

C. they are dangerous to both people and other animals

D. they are very hard to be fed no matter where they are

63. The main idea of this article is to _____.

A. call on everyone to protect the environment

B. introduce some rare and unusual animals to us

C. report that scientists aim to save some less-known mammals

D. advise the readers to contribute money to the project

C

Life began on our planet about 3,500 million years ago. The first living things were found in the sea, and over the course of millions of years, from these early life

forms, a rich variety of animals have descended. Through the process we call evolution, animals have become adapted to enable them to live in all parts of the world, sometimes in the most dangerous environments.

The animal kingdom is very large and we do not know for certain how many species there are in the world. Around 1.5 million species of animals have been named and described by scientists — and over a million of these are insects. It is known that there are about twice as many animals in tropical rainforests as in any other place, and it is here that there is likely to be countless numbers of species yet unknown to science. It has been estimated that the total number of insect species alone could be around 30 million!

What we can be sure of is that the most numerous large animal on Earth is the human! Modern man appeared about 30,000 years ago and has increasingly come to dominate the planet. The steady increase in population was speeded up by advances in civilization such as the Industrial Revolution and better health and medical care. The rate in increase of the human population is slowing down in parts of the Northern Hemisphere, but it continues to rise in the Third World countries, despite the effect of famine, floods, disease and war.

This population explosion means that millions of people suffer from hunger and disease, and more and more wild places are taken over, causing animals and plants to suffer.

64. From the first paragraph we know that _____.

A. the evolution of the animals has a long history

B. the first living things were found on land

C. animals develop themselves freely

D. animals can only live in suitable conditions

65. The rapid increase of the human is due to _____.

A. better natural living conditions

B. the increase of the plants and animals

C. the human’s advances in civilization

D. the decrease of natural disasters

66. As stated in this article, more and more animals and plants are endangered because _____.

A. the globe is becoming warmer and warmer

B. pollution is becoming more and more serious

C. more and more wild places are taken over by the human

D. they can’t find enough food and water to depend on

67. If another paragraph is needed, it should focus on how to _____.

A. develop the economy of the world

B. identify the different species of animals

C. develop new species of animals

D. deal with the population explosion

D

Many people’s careers begin after they get a “break”. On November 14, 1943, Leonard Bernstein made his debut (首次登场) as a conductor for the New York Philharmonic(交响乐团) at Carnegie Hall in New York City. This was Bernstein’s “big break,” and a major turning point in his career. He got this break because he was taking the place of another conductor, Bruno Walter, who had fallen ill.

Bernstein had been appointed Assistant Conductor for the New York Philharmonic only a few months before that night. Just 25 years old, he was relatively inexperienced. At the last minute, Bernstein was told he was to take Walter’s place, so he did not have any time to rehearse. The music he was going to conduct was very difficult. Plus, the concert was going to be broadcast nationally on the radio. Despite all these pressures, Bernstein rose to the occasion and received a standing clapping at the end of the concert. The event made national headlines, and Bernstein became famous overnight.

Some people feel they do their best under the most stressful circumstances. What was it about Leonard Bernstein that made him do so well in such a difficult situation? Perhaps Leonard Bernstein did so well because music was his passion. The son of a man who supplied hairdressing products, Bernstein became interested in music at the age of 10. By the time he was a teenager, he was performing in public. He became

a soloist with the Boston Public School Orchestra, and for 13 weeks in 1934, played classics on the radio.

68. The word “break” in the first paragraph may be similar to _____.

A. rest

B. chance

C. pause

D. gap

69. The underlined word in the second paragraph probably means _____.

A. practice for performance

B. practice playing the solo

C. practice playing music

D. practice broadcasting

70. Leonard Bernstein did very well because of _____.

A. the difficult music

B. the stress of the circumstances

C. his passion for music

D. Bruno Walter’s absence

71. The last paragraph is written to show _____.

A. Leonard Bernstein was very clever

B. Leonard Bernstein’s parents worked hard

C. chances are important to a famous person

D. early interest led to Leonard Bernstein’s success

E

College academics are completely different from high school academics. In high school, we were mostly tested on our ability to memorize facts, dates and formulas. In college, you will be required to think critically and to analyze the important ideas and theories. Your grades will be based more on your ability to read and understand the main ideas and to write about them in a critical way.

Unless you are absolutely certain of what you would like to study, use your freshman year as a time to explore courses in a number of areas.

As you probably know, Harvard’s educational system requires you to take what are called core classes, which are designed to expose all students to areas like literature and arts, the sciences and history. For many students, these core classes

are the most difficult because they require us to take courses in areas that are not our advantages. We advise you not to load up yourself with core classes in your first year. Get familiarized with the way that the academic program works at Harvard first, and then deal with the bulk of core classes.

Get involved but don’t get overwhelmed. While we were used to participating in lots of activities in high school, we chose to concentrate our time on a couple of key activities in college.

Meet as many people as you can. One of the best things about attending Harvard is that you can meet some truly incredible people. Our classmates included a prince, television actresses and daughter of a U.S. vice president.

72. What does this passage mainly talk about?

A. How to get used to college life at Harvard.

B. How to be admitted to Harvard.

C. How to achieve good grades at Harvard.

D. How to be tested at Harvard.

73. It can be inferred that _____.

A. high school students have bad memories

B. core classes are not given in high schools

C. many college freshmen are bad at core classes

D. high school students can go to Harvard without an exam

74. Core classes require the students to _____.

A. memorize facts, dates and formulas

B. analyze the important ideas and theories

C. study literature and arts, the sciences and history

D. go to work after class at Harvard

75. Which of the following is advised in the last paragraph?

A. To explore as many courses as possible.

B. To join in all the college activities.

C. To take as many exams as possible.

D. To meet as many people as possible.

(One possible version):

In order to celebrate the Earth Day, our school organized a lot of activities on April 22.

In the morning, some of us planted trees. Some picked up rubbish in the neighborhood or parks. Most of us also donated money to organizations that help to save forests and endangered animals. Several groups of students went to the streets, telling the passers-by how seriously our earth has been damaged. A lot of rich soil is being washed away and the globe is becoming warmer and warmer after the forests are cut down. Some kinds of wild animals are on the edge of extinction because a lot of them have been killed.

By doing all these we would like everybody to know that we have only one earth and we should protect it.
