Life is hard—even harder than anyone thought it would be. When you were younger, you dreamed of the world being your playground, and you were told that you could do anything and be anyone you wanted. Somehow, though, things haven’t been that smooth sailing you wanted them to be. The

world seems to go against you, and the last thing you want to hear is "Cheer up!"

Still, there’re a couple of things you might not notice about your situation. Next time you’re down, maybe the following will provide motivation:

First, not everything is bad. It's a well-accepted fact that bad news makes for sensational (极好的) television ratings. The fact that something is negative catches a lot more attention than something positive, and that’s because it's easy to see things in a negative light. However, that shouldn't distract you from the bigger picture.

Resist the tunnel vision that results from constant negativity. Remember that even though there's lots of really nasty stuff going on, you're surrounded by some pretty awesome stuff, as well.

You should also remember other people aren’t you. No one likes being compared to anothe r person. What makes it even worse, if that's even possible, is when you do it to yourself.

Stop comparing yourself to another person and you'll realize that you’re very more awesome than you give yourself credit for.

Last, failure isn't where the game stops. So you tried something new, but you didn't follow through. Frustrated at yourself, you stop trying. As a result, your quality of life goes down terribly. You've given up on it, though, because you don’t see the point (since you failed the first time).

Now, you’re an adult. The things you are trying are much more complicated than five-year-old you. However, your behavior shouldn’t change in the slightest-when you fail in something, that’s just more information in your data bank. You know that method doesn't work, so try another one! And another one after that! Do this until you figure it out. Giving up is for lesser beings, and you sure aren't one of those.

24. The author mentions bad news in order to show that ___.

A. bad news makes people see things in a negative light

B. bad news is more likely to catch people's eyes

C. bad news attracts people to see positive things

D. bad news has a negative effect on television rates

25. What does the underlined part "nasty stuff" in Para. 4 probably mean?

A. Unstable emotions. C. Amazing incidents.

B. Important events. D. Something unpleasant.

26. How should we view failure according to the passage?

A. We should change our behavior.

B. We should keep trying the old method.

C. We should learn from failure.

D. We should think in a more complicated way.

27. What is the passage mainly about?

A. It inspires us to learn from negative experiences.

B. It compares negative and positive experiences.

C. It criticizes those who are affected by bad experiences.

D. It discusses how negative experiences affect others.

Millions could be saved by the recently developed “universal vaccine(疫苗),” scientists claim. According to Science Daily, there were two universal vaccines developed by an

international team of scientists: a USA-specific vaccine with coverage of 95 percent of known U. S. influenza(流感) strains and a universal vaccine with coverage of 88 percent of known flu strains globally.

“Every year we have a round of flu vaccinati on, where we choose a recent strain of flu as the vaccine, hoping that it will protect against next year’s strains. We know this method is safe, and that it works reasonably well most of the time,” Dr Derek Gatherer of Lancaster University said in a statement.

“However, sometimes it doesn’t work一as in the H3N2 vaccine failure in winter 2014 一2015 一 and even when it does it is extremely expensive and labour -intensive. Also, these annual vaccines give us no protection at all against potential future flu. ”

State News Flu explains vaccines work by exposing the immune system “to proteins on the exterior of influenza viruses that have been caused to be harmless”.The vaccines prepare the immune system to be ready once it has come across the particular virus included in the vaccine by developing antibodies(抗体)to fight them off.

Recalling the 1918 Influenza, also called as the Mother of All Pandemics(大流行),the scientists note that it is important to develop vaccines to avoid massive deaths.

The 1918 Influenza, as stated by Stanford killed somewhere between 20 and 40 million people, more than the number of deaths during the World War I.

Dr Gatherer said:“It doesn’t have to be this way. Based on our knowledge of the flu virus and the human immune system, we can use computers to design the elements of a vaccine that gives much broader and longer -lasting protection.”

Meanwhile, the scientists are still looking for partners for a laboratory proof — of —principle test.

28. Where is the result of the research from?

A. Science Daily.

B. China Daily.

C. Stanford.

D. Dr Lancaster.

29. What does the underlined word “strain” probably mean?

A. vaccine

B. virus

C. kind

D. system

30. What can we know about the yearly vaccines?

A. They always work reasonably well to protect against next year’s strains.

B. They don't have effect on protecting against next year’s strains.

C. They can protect against potential future flu.

D. They have no effect on protecting against underlying future flu.

31. Why did the author mention the 1918 influenza in the passage?

A. To show the importance of developing vaccines.

B. To remind people of the terrible event.

C. To explain the reasons for massive deaths.

D. To be in memory of the dead in the influenza.

D

It was a discovery that could change science. “We hit the jackpot (头条)here,” said British scientist Guillem Anglada-Escude about the discovery of a planet “more or less” like Earth that is orbiting Proxima Centauri, the star nearest to our solar system.

What do we know about this exciting new Earth? Well, Proxima b, or" Earth II" as you could

call it, is a little bigger than our Earth, and its years only take 11 days. Also, since it is so much closer to its red dwarf(矮小的)star than we are to the sun, the sky on its world is orange without any blue at all, creating a forever sunset effect.

There are a lot of questions for life forms that could live on this new planet. As the Chicago Tribune wrote in an article: “First, as reporter Lois Lane asked Superman in the first movie, do you eat? Do you have poetry? Do you have any interest in visiting other worlds? If so, put Earth on your Must See list. ”

The discovery of the planet made the Chicago Tribune newspaper wonder if anyone had seen or heard of the US’ space postcards from its Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 space probes(探测器),sent up into space in 1972 and the next year.

Included with the probes were pictures of a man and a woman, along with diagrams of the solar system. Gold records were also sent up into space on Voyager probes in 1977. If aliens on Proxima b had played the record, they would have found sounds and images that showed the incredible diversity of Earth.

Aliens might also have heard the message from former US President Jimmy Carter:“This is a present from a small distant world...our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts and our feelings. We are trying to survive our time so we may live into yours. We hope someday, having solved the problems we face, to join a community of galactic (星际)civilizations. This record represents our hope and our determination, and our good will in an...awesome universe. ”

It might not be time to plan a visit to Proxima b just yet-even if it has an atmosphere — as first, we would need to invent a way to get there in less than the 78,000 years it would take at 36,000mph (about 57,900km/h).

"Proxima b looks to us like a promising Plan(et) B, just in case things go really south on this blue planet, “the Chicago Tribune wrote.

32. Which of the following is TRUE about Proxima b?

A. Proxima b is bigger and closer to the sun than Earth.

B. It is a newly discovered star in the solar system

C. Proxima b has an atmosphere like the Earth's.

D. The sky of Proxima b turns orange at sunset.

33. The postcards and records were sent up into space on probes to _________.

A. show off the incredible diversity of Earth to aliens.

B. describe Earth and express friendly feelings to aliens.

C. test if there were aliens in space.

D. invite aliens to visit Earth.

34. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

A. Earth will get worse and worse in the near future.

B. Proxima b seems to be an alternative living place.

C. We will be able to settle on Proxima b soon.

D. Proxima b is more suitable to live on than Earth.

35. What is the main purpose of the text?

A. To give advice on how to visit a new planet.

B. To illustrate the thrills of moving to a new home in space.

C. To prove that aliens really exist on other planets.

D. To report on the discovery of an interesting new planet.

It includes airfare ($225), hotel ($170), dining out ($116) and dressing up ($95) and the gift. If you have weddings to attend this year, here are some tips for you to avoid breaking the bank. 1. Book flights in advance The moment you decide to attend a wedding is the time to check flight prices at the best time. Plane fares are higher in the summer, especially in July and August. Booking in advance will save you money, as will watch for sales on lower-cost carriers like JetBlue and Frontier. You can check Google Flights for a calendar of prices showing the cheapest days to fly from apps like Hopper to get real-time alerts when a fare is at its lowest price point. 2. Don't blow your budget on the gift If you've got the money, an expensive gift is lovely. But there's no need to take out loans to prove your love for the happy couple. Skip an expensive necklace by giving (an appropriate amount of) cash instead. To save on the gift, consider making one: A photo album or scrapbook of memories with the bride and groom shows how much you care. You could also share the gift with other guest(s) or even make gifts with DIY ideas by yourself to save money. 3. Use old dresses and suits You don't always have to be on a new dress for a wedding. While men have the option of repeating their suits, women are more likely to spend money on new clothes for the special occasion. But before you take out your wallet, consider reinventing something already in your

2019级高三年级第一次英语周考

2019级高三年级第一次英语周考(志强专用) 英语试卷 命题教师:焦国禄 第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A How often do you let other people like a bad driver, a rude waiter, or an angry boss, change your mood? Sixteen years ago I learned a lesson. I got in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver used his brakes, the tires made a loud noise, and at the very last moment our car stopped just 3cm from the back of the other car. I couldn’t believe it. But then I couldn’t believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, turned his head around and he started shouting at us. I couldn’t believe it! My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. So, I said, “Why did you just do that? This guy could have killed us!” And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, “The Law of the Garbage Truck”. He said, “Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of anger and disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they look for a place to dump it. And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you.” So I started thinking how often I let Garbage Trucks run right over me and how often I take their garbage and spread it to other people. I began to see Garbage Trucks. I see the load people are carrying. I see them coming to dump it. And like my taxi driver, I don’t take it personally. I just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. 21. What happened to the author on his way to Grand Central Station? A. He was caught in a traffic jam. B. He had a fight with his taxi driver. C. His taxi almost ran into another car. D. His taxi suddenly got a flat tire. 22. When the author saw his taxi driver smile and wave at the driver of the black car, he_______. A. got very angry B. was deeply impressed C. felt quite disappointed D. praised him for his manners 23. The underlined part “the load” in the last paragraph probably refers to _______. A. the bad mood B. poor habits C. waste materials D. great pressure
