二.阅读理解(共4小题;每小题2分,满分8分)

It started about 30 years ago. Three men who’d grown up together in Pigtown (a neighborhood in the city of Baltimore) took an empty piece of land at the corner of Ward and Bayard streets and started tossing horseshoes (掷马蹄铁).

None of the three —not Roy Whitney, not his cousin Emory Green, not Emory’s little brother, Leon — knew they were starting a tradition.

“We started playing for the fun of it. Then word got around, and people started coming from other neighborhoods, and it ke pt on growing,” Leon Green, 62, said Saturday afternoon at the First Annual Horseshoe Tournament (锦标赛) at the Pit in Pigtown.

People in Pigtown said they held the event to celebrate the important role the site has come to play in raising Pigtown’s neighborhood spirit.

“Once the event started, it became a neighborh ood hangout, a place for men to hear music, talk to each other, and pitch horseshoes,” said William Chambers, 83, a lifelong Pigtown local.

“Informal games are often held, rain or shine, especially on weekends,” said Charlotte Marshall, another lifelong l ocal. “We care about this neighborhood and about each other.” She was helping cook hot dogs and burgers at the event.

A star in local competitions, Tony Ashton, and his partner, Ernie Jones, beat two other two-man teams in early rounds.

“My wife says, ‘Don’t bring home any more prizes!’” he said, laughing. “If I win one today, I’ll give it to the neighbors here. They are worthy of it.”

Leon Green and his partner, Whitney, were knocked out early in the tournament, but stood by happily drinking a cup of fresh juice.

He seemed to be enjoying a bigger victory.

“We have a good time here. The event is about getting together and talking and enjoying yourself. You don’t even have to be that good. It’s all for fun. It’s the way we’re raised here in Pigtown,” he said.

1. Who is a creator of Pigtown’s horseshoe games?

A. Leon Green.

B. William Chambers.

C. Charlotte Marshall.

D. Tony Ashton.

2. The horseshoe site is important to the locals of Pigtown because _____.

A. it is close to two main streets

B. it serves as a big food market

C. it helps build neighborhood spirit

D. it is a major horseshoe training center

3. According to the last three paragraphs, Leon Green _____.

A. came mainly to enjoy some juice

B. cared little about success or failure

C. became champion of the tournament

D. was confident of his horseshoe skills

4. The author writes this text mainly to _____.

A. discuss the value of neighbors

B. introduce an interesting sport

C. describe the past of Pigtown

D. report a community event

三.根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

__2 That’s because at least twice a week I catch her with a smelly old bone that she has found.

She would carry the old bones home if I let her. __3 When I tell her to drop the bone, she doe s so unhappily, looking at me with her big eyes as if I’m starving (使挨饿) her.

The other day we had been walking for about 20 minutes. Suddenly I noticed that instead of sniffing and running all over the place as usual, she was walking closely after me. Though I had told her that she could go, she kept walking behind me. Ten minutes later, she was still walking closely after me so I stopped and took a good look at her. __4 She had decided that I wouldn’t see it if she walked alongside me where I could just see the top of her head. __5 Once I’d made her drop the bone, she was off. In those moments, you may feel so much anger that you want to hurt the other person too. But we all know that revenge(报复) doesn’t get us anywhere. So, in order to live a happy life, the best way to deal with the problem is, perhaps, as the old saying goes, to “forgive and forget”. The wisdom of this saying has even been proven in scientific studies. “It is well established that learning to forgive others can have positive benefits for one’s physical and mental Health,”Saima Noreen, a scientist at the University of St Andrews, Uk, told the Huffington Post. And now, Noreen and her research team may have found one more reason that you should stick to this principle – forgiving somebody who has hurt you makes it easier for you to forget the unhappy memory, according to their new study. In the study, researchers asked volunteers to read descriptions of 40 different situations that contained bad actions such as stealing, lying and cheating.

A While most high school students spend most of their time worrying about who likes who, and different relationships between their classmates, I choose to focus on my school lessons and sports. When I was young, my mother encouraged me to develop and keep friendship with boys in order to build strong relationships. But she told me not to risk a good friendship with a boy with the title of boyfriend. It's indeed a wise choice to stay friends with those of the opposite sex(异性). In my opinion, even though some high school relationship might continue after graduation, the probability of them lasting much longer is so slim (微小的) that there really is not a point to it. Firstly you have to think about such a question----whether it is possible to hurt both of you, or even hurt both of your future husbands or wives. My second point is that you still can date(约会) if you hope marriage could possibly follow. Except this, there really is not any other reason for dating. Some students desire relationships for a chance to be romantic (浪漫的). While these are nice to have, there are many more important things at this point in our lives. The titles of boyfriend and girlfriend put too much stress on a relationship between high school students. Just staying as common friends may be the best choice for us. I strongly advise we should deal with it in a proper way and follow our teachers’ advice if necessary. 21. The author writes this passage probably for_ to read. A. high school students B. school teachers C. parents and teachers D. married couples 22. Between the opposite sexes, the relationship of being good friends might be__ than that of being boy/girl friends. A. weaker B. safer C. slimmer D. stronger 23. How does the writer like the idea of dating among the students? A. Dating is a nice chance for students to be romantic. B. Studying is far more important than dating in school C. In high school dating can surely lead to future marriage D. Dating in high school is sure to hurt your future family 24. The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph might refer to_ . A. the title of boyfriend or girlfriend at school B. advice given by both teachers and parents C. the pressure from school lessons and sports D. the relationship between students of opposite sexes B “Let’s go Dutch, shall we?” Jim said after a dinner to his friends in a restaurant. What does Jim mean? Long ago, there was a kind of dinner called Dutch treat. At a Dutch treat, the invited guests were expected to pay for their own share of the food and drink. Now, Dutch treat means when friends go out to have fun, each person pays his or her own share. There are many other expressions related with “Dutch” in American English. However, most of them were first used in England in the 17th century. At that time, the British and the Dutch were war enemies. So when British people talked about something wrong or bad, they would like to use the word “Dutch”. A common expression heard a few years ago was in Dutch. A friend may tell you, “You are in Dutch. The teacher is angry with you. Be careful!” When a soldier took Dutch leave, he left the army without permission. Dutch courage is the false courage produced by the effects of drinking wine. When someone has just said something you do n’t believe is true, you can say “I am a Dutch-man.” There is one expression that did come from the Dutch. That is to talk like a Dutch uncle. The Dutch were known for the strict and serious way they educated their children. 25. What did people mean by sa ying “Let’s go Dutch”? A. The guests should leave first. B. Each person should pay his or her own bill C. The food should be better next time. D. People should go to another restaurant. 26. According to the passage, the British in the 17th century ______. A. first used the word "Dutch" B. were mistaken for Dutch people C. got along well with the Dutch people D. used the word "Dutch" for something bad
