Marco was the original travel writer, whose trade contacts with Asia changed Europe, opening it up to new ideas and cultures.

Marco Polo was born in the Venetian Republic around1254.At the time,Venice was one of the most powerful trading cities in the world, and was ruled as an independent city state.Marco’s mother died when he was young,so he was brought up by his aunt and uncle. When Marco was born, his brother(Maffeo)and father(Niccolo),who were successful merchants, were away on a trading voyage. They didn’t get back until Marco was about15.

In1271,Niccolo and Maffeo set off again for Asia, this time taking Marco with them.On a previous journey they’d met Kublai Khan(the Yuan Dynasty),and they were keen to establish trade links between Kublai’s empire and Venice. The Polos sailed across the Mediterranean to Acre(now in northern Israel). Then, they traveled by camel to the port of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf.Their plan was to sail to China but they couldn’t find any good boats. So,they continued the journey overland, finally meeting Kublai Khan at his summer palace in Xanadu,about275kms north of modern Beijing.Marco was now probably21years old.The journey had taken over three years.

The Polos had learnt a great deal about the world during their travels and so Kublai employed Marco as a government official. This gave Marco the opportunity to travel around much of Kublai’s empire in China. In fact,Kublai found the Polos so useful that he was unwilling to let them return home.However,in1292,the Polos eventually left, sailing from China and ending up in Hormuz again. The journey was extremely dangerous:of the600travelers who set off,only18 arrived in Hormuz, including all three of the Polo family.

The Polos finally returned to Venice in1295,twenty-four years after setting off. They had traveled24,000kms.By this time Venice was at war with Genoa, its trade rival.Unfortunately for Marco,he was captured by the Genoese and imprisioned. However,he used his time as a prisoner to write a book about his family’s travels:II Milione(known as The Travels of Marco Polo in English). It was the first book to tell Europeans about China and the East.No original copy survives, but there are several versions of it.Marco’s writings influenced many other travelers,

most notably Christopher Columbus, who carried a copy of II Milione with him on his voyage in search of Asia.

After his release from prison in1299,Marco rejoined his father and uncle in Venice. The family were now even wealthier than before thanks to the many treasures they’d brought back from the East.Marco financed many more trading journeys but never left the city again. He died in1324and was buried in the church of San Lorenzo in Venice.

C

Five or six years ago,I attended a lecture on the science of attention.A professor who conducts research over in the medical school was talking about attention blindness, the basic feature of the human brain that, when we concentrate on one task, causes us to miss just about everything else.Because we can’t see what we can’t see,our lecturer was determined to catch us in the act.He had us watch a video of six people tossing(投掷)basketballs back and forth, three in white shirts and three in black, and our task was to keep track only of the tosses among the people in white. The tape rolled, and everyone began counting.

Everyone except me.I’m dyslexic(患阅读困难症的),and the moment I saw that tape with the confusing basketball tossers,I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep track of their movements,so I let my mind wander.I became curious, though, when about30seconds into the tape,a gorilla(大猩猩)walked in among the players. She(we later learned a female student was in the gorilla suit) stared at the camera, beat her chest with her fist, and then went away while they continued passing the balls.

When the tape stopped, the professor asked how many people had counted at least a dozen basketball tosses.Hands went up all over.He then asked who had counted13,14,and congratulated those who’d scored the perfect15.Then he asked,“And who saw the gorilla?”

I raised my hand and was surprised to discover I was the only person at my table and one of only three or four in the large room to do so.He’d set us up,trapping us in our own attention blindness.Yes,there had been a trick, but he wasn’t the one who had played it on us.By concentrating so hard on counting,we had managed to miss the gorilla in the midst.

Attention blindness is the fundamental organizing principle of the brain, and I believe that it presents us with a great opportunity. My take is different from that of many neuroscientists:Where they see the shortcomings of the individual,I sense an opportunity for cooperation.Fortunately, given the interactive(互动的)nature of most of our lives in the digital age,we have the tools to control our different forms of attention and take advantage of them.

It’s not easy to admit that everything we’ve learned about how to pay attention means that we’ve been missing everything else. It’s not easy for us logical, intelligent, confident types to admit that the very key to our success—our ability to discover a problem and solve it,an achievement obtained in all those years in school and beyond—may be exactly what limits us.No one ever told us that our way of seeing left out everything else.

62.Which of the following is true about the writer when the tape was played?

A.Like everyone else, the writer was counting carefully.

B.The writer had difficulty keeping track of the tossers’movements.

C.The writer showed great curiosity about what the players were doing.

D.The writer tried hard to stop her mind from wandering.

63.What’s the total number of basketball tosses by the players in white shirts in the video?

A.13.

B.14.

C.15.

D.30.

64.Most of the people failed to notice the gorilla in the video because_____.

A.they focused on the basketball tossing only

B.they were trapped by the basketball players

C.they did not know what they were supposed to do

D.they did not listen to the lecture carefully

65.In the writer’s opinion,attention blindness______.

A.should be viewed as a shortcoming of the individual

B.might be overcome if we can discover problems and solve them

C.makes it possible for us to work together for a shared purpose

D.helps us to become logical, intelligent and confident types of people

D

In this passage adapted from a novel,a Canadian woman recalls for her childhood during the1960s.Originally from China, the family travelled to Irvine,Ontario,Canada, where the parents opened a restaurant, the Dragon Café.

As a young girl I never really thought about my parents’lives in Irvine, how small their world must have seemed, never extending beyond the Dragon Café.Every day my parents did the same

jobs in the restaurant.I watched the same customers come for meals, for morning coffee, for afternoon soft drinks and French fries. For my parents one day was like the next. They settled into an uneasy and distant relationship with each other.Their love, their tenderness, they gave to me.

But my life was changing.I became taller and bigger,my second teeth grew in white and straight. At school I began to learn about my adopted country.I spoke English like a native, without a trace of an accent.I played, though, and dreamed in the language of our Irvine neighbors.

A few years later and I would no longer remember a time when I didn't speak their words and read their books. But my father and Uncle Yat still spoke the same halting English. My mother spoke only a few words.I began to translate conversations they had with the customers, switching between English and Chinese.Whenever I stepped outside the restaurant it seemed I was entering a world unknown to my family:school, church, friends'houses, the town beyond Main Street,I found it hard to imagine a year without winter any more,a home other than Irvine.

For my mother, though, home would always be China. In Irvine she lived among strangers, unable to speak their language.Whenever she talked about happy times, they were during her childhood in that distant land.A wistful smile would soften her face as she told me about sleeping and playing with her sister in the attic above her parents'bedroom. She once showed me a piece of jade-green silk cloth that was frayed and worn around the edge.In the center was a white lotus floating in varying shades of blue water, the embroidery(刺绣)so fine that when I held it at arm's length the petals looked real.I had been helping her store away my summer clothes in the brown leather suitcase from Hong Kong when I noticed a piece of shiny material spread it on her lap.“My mother embroidered this herself.I was going to have it made into a cushion, but then my life changed and over here there seems to be no place for lovely things. It's all I have that reminds me of her,”she said.“Maybe,Sun-Jen,one day you will do something with it.”I admired the cloth some more, then she carefully folded it and stored it back in her suitcase.

There was little left from her old life. She said it was so long ago that sometimes it felt as if it had never happened. But she described her life with such clarity and vividness that I knew all those memories lived on inside her. There was so little in this new country that gave her pleasure. The good things she found were related in some way to China:an aria from a Chinese opera,a letter from a relative back home or from Aunt Hai-Lan in Toronto, written in Chinese,a familiar-looking script that I couldn't read and that had nothing to do with my life in Canada.

There were times when I felt guilty about my own happiness in Irvine. We had come to Canada because of me,but I was the only one who had found a home.

A young person is said to have a behavior disorder when his or her behavior is noticeably different from that expected in the school or community. This can also be stated in simpler terms as a child who is not doing what adults want him to do at a particular time.Children with this disorder often seem to be behaving in different and socially unacceptable ways.

Like learning disabilities, behavior disorders are hard to diagnose. There are no physical symptoms in the body that are observable or measurable.Behavior disorders are therefore identified by observing behavior patterns in the child over a period of time.If a child displays some of the following behaviors,he may be labeled with a behavior disorder:

◆Aggression and cruelty to people and animals.

◆Destruction of property—defacing or damaging things.

◆Little sympathy and concern for others.

◆Takes no responsibility for behavior. Also lies, cheats and steals easily.

◆Disregards rules and regulations.

In addition to these general symptoms of a behavior disorder, there are other symptoms characteristic of more specific behavior disorders such as ADHD—this is the inattentive, can’t-sit-still behavior. The attention can’t last long and the behavior is impulsive at times. The child also seems quite distracted and forgetful.

Behavior disorders come from brain injury, child abuse, and shock, etc. There have also been indications that it could be a genetic disorder. The behavior therefore is an involuntary response to these experiences and the child should not be blamed for his behavior.Since the child has problems controlling his behavior,it stands to reason that his performance in school will be affected.A child with a behavior disorder will feel bad about himself and that low self-esteem will be further worsened by the adults around him who do not treat his condition with understanding and willingness to help.

Behavior disorders are best dealt with by behavior and psychological treatments. But,as with learning disabilities, accurate diagnosis is important and this must be over a length of time.It is also important in trying to modify the behavior to be clear about what is the behavior you are expecting.Make sure it is a rational expectation. For example, expecting a three-year-old to sit quietly through a long church service may not be reasonable,or demanding that a six-year-old does extra home work after a long day of school and extra curricular activities may be stretching the child’s concentration and attention too far.Since some behavior disorders result from shocking and upsetting life experiences or brain injury, treatments should include helping the child to resolve and heal emotionally from the experience. The behavior could be corrected through emotional healing. In other words, when a human being is emotionally healthy, that is,can be aware of his intelligence and enthusiasm for life and his loving connectedness to other human beings,he automatically“behaves”rationally.

Chinese adults read news and threads on smartphone app WeChat for more than40minutes a day on average, according to the latest annual survey of China’s reading habits released on April 20.The results show that on average,Chinese adults use WeChat to read twice a day for a total

length of more than40minutes.The survey showed that66.4percent of adults in China used WeChat to read,of which72.9percent read news,67.1percent read their friends’updates and20.9 percent read threads on public accounts.

Professor Wang Yuguang of the Department of Information Management in Peking University said the dream of having libraries all over the world is still not realized, and the presence of WeChat is filling this void to some extent. But personally,he thinks WeChat is taking too much of our time.Students are too reliant on WeChat.

“Reading on WeChat is fragmented(片段的),not to mention the inaccuracy of some of the information,”said Dean of Chinese Academy of Press and Publication Wei Yushan.Experts believe that children’s stories, academic reports and classic literature should still be read on paper.

People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 36 Code breaking never lags(落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography. There are three main types of cryptography. 37 For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell out the hidden message “Meet me.” 38 You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitut e a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 5 20 13 5.” A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 39 For example, “bridge” might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “Bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.”40 However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently. A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book. B. In any language, some letters are used more than others. C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message. D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words. G. Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet. A Heroic Driver Larry works with Transport Drivers, Inc.
