For me, the greatest story of rags to riches is that of Andrew Carnegie, who started life in poverty but became one of the richest men in the world.

Carnegie was born in Scotland in 1835, the son of a weaver. In 1848, the family moved to the United States and at 13Carnegie began to work in a cotton mill, earning $1.5per week. About three years later, he found a better job as a telegraph messenger boy. At work, his superiors were impressed by his abilities and willingness to work hard. In 1853, he gained an office job at the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. This was his first big break. He continued to impress and rose rapidly through the company, gaining more and more responsibility. At the same time, Carnegie loved reading very much and made use of every opportunity to visit the library. He read widely on all subjects, particularly literature.

Carnegie now began to save a little money and, with the help of his employer, began to make some successful investments. He invested in the iron industry and eventually set up in business himself, owing several iron and steel plants. This was where he made his fortune. By the 1890s, the Carnegie Steel Company was the biggest and most profitable business in the world.

Carnegie had always believed that the pursuit of wealth would never end in itself. In his view, successful, wealthy people should redistribute their wealth for the benefit of everyone in society. True to his word, in 1901, at the age of 66, he retired from business and devoted the rest of his life to charity work.

Carnegie's lack of formal education and his poor family background clearly didn't put barriers in the A. Becoming more and more intelligent.

B. Having a better sense of confidence.

C. Reading more and more books.

D. Being promoted to higher ranks.

22. When did Carnegie get his first big success in his li f e?

A. When he took a job as a telegraph messenger boy.

B. When he worked at the Pennsylvania Railroad Company.

C. When he made investments in the iron industry.

D. When he founded the Carnegie Steel Company.

23. W h at ca n b e lea rn t fro m t h e te x t?

A. Carnegie's employers had a high opinion of him.

B. Carnegie made the investments independently after saving enough money.

C. Carnegie believed that we should try to earn as much money as possible.

D. Carnegie could have been more successful if he had been formally educated.

B. Andrew Carnegie: A Wealthy Man

C. Steel& Iron: The Most Profitable Business

We always can see firefighters holding a hose(水管)outside of a burning building, but the Golden Eagles Hotshots don't fight fires quite that way. When they go into action, you may not even see a fire truck.

The Hotshots are firefighters who battle fires in wilderness areas. But don't think you'll only find them in their home state California. Wherever there is a national wildfire emergency, the Golden Eagles Hotshots could be there.

D. Carry out their work mostly in forests and mountains

"Scientists will be very interested in this amazing creature, "said New Zealand Fisheries Minister

27. According to the passage, why do the firefighters light"backfires"?

Jim Anderson. "It adds immeasurably to our understanding of the marine environment. "

A. To signal for help.

B. To remove obstacles. 29. W hy i s it usu all y d i ff ic u lt for e xp e r t s t o obs e rv e t h e squ i d ?

C. To protect trees and bushes. A. Because it moves too fast.

D. To prevent the fire from spreading.

B. Because it is too large.

But these firefighters don't work the same way as firefighters in a big city. They work in areas where there are large numbers of trees, bushes, and grass. They climb up and down steep hills to clear brush and burnable debris (残骸). They sometimes use water, but they often fight fire with fire!

They do that by lighting what are called"backfires, "which are small, controlled fires that burn up fuel in the path of larger wildfires. That way, when the wildfire gets there, it has nothing to burn and nowhere to go, because all the burnable fuel has already gone up in smoke.

The Hotshots also clear away fuel using old fashioned hard work. For example, they use a saw to cut away trees and heavy brush that could catch fire.

Of course there are times when the Golden Eagles Hotshots do have trucks to supply water to the fires. But the water is limited, and these guys have to rely on hard work more than anything. Physical fitness is very important. They have to be in great physical shapes to handle steep hills and difficult terrain (地形)while carrying a 60-pound pack.

The Golden Eagles Hotshots definitely work hard for their pay. But thanks to their efforts, many lives have been saved, many houses have not been burned, and countless trees are still standing.

25. What can we learn about the Golden Eagles Ho t sho t s ?

A. They are firefighters working in big cities.

B. Their work requires physical strength.

C. They are voluntary firefighters working for free.

D. They usually hold a hose to put out the fires. 26. The firefighters mentioned in the passage .

A. Do most of their work in California

B. Avoid climbing steep hills in their work

C. Do their work equipped with only advanced tools A. Doubtful.

B. Sympathetic.

C. Critical.

D. Appreciative.

New Zealand fishermen caught what may prove to be a world-record-breaking colossal squid.

In the cold, dark waters of the Antarctic hides a creature with eight arms, two super long tentacles

(触须)and eyes as big as dinner plates. Sound like something out of a science fiction movie? Think again.

On February 21, New Zealand fishermen landed a colossal squid at the length of a school bus. They had been fishing with long lines for Chilean sea bass in the waters off the coast of New Zealand when they caught the rare squid. With two hours of hard work, the crew skillfully pulled the creature into a net and dragged it aboard their ship.

Scientists evaluate that the animal weighs about a half ton and is about 40feet long. That would

make this colossal squid the biggest on record.

First identified in 1925after two tentacles were found in a whale's stomach, the colossal squid has long been a mystery. The animals are not easy to observe because they can go down to ocean depths of 6, 500feet. What scientists do know from studying the bodies of a half dozen colossal squids is that they are fierce hunters.

The recently captured colossal squid has been frozen to keep it for scientific study. It will be transported to New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa, in the capital city of Wellington. Experts believe it to be the first adult male ever caught undamaged. Scientists hope to learn more about the colossal squid's diet, behavior and reproductive patterns.

The hotel habits of business travelers have been studied for the third year by the worldwide hotel

chain Novotel, which has several hotels in China.

The survey of Novotel hotels throws up some interesting facts about behavior of businessmen and

businesswomen when they are away from home. Women pilfer souvenirs from their hotel rooms as men

raid the bars in the refrigerators in their rooms, the hotel study found. It discovered that women are more

likely to take a souvenir from their hotel room than men, and a man, more often than a woman, will have

the biggest mini-bar bill for drinks used in their rooms.

Men leave cleaner hotel rooms-men were voted tidied travelers than women by staff and

management at the international chain of hotels-but they make noisier guests, usually caused by

watching the televisions with the sound turned up loudly.

It's almost always the male guest who is caught naked outside his room, often through mistaking the

door to the corridor for the one to the bathroom.

四、短文填词(共10 小题; 每小题1.5 分, 满分15 分)阅读下面材料, 在空白处填入适当的内容(不多于3 个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

It is understandable that young employees and college graduates would prefer bigger cities as their first choice to live in. Nevertheless, upon careful consideration, it is not such a wise choice after all. As far as I am(61)(concern), bigger cities may provide young people with a big dream that would hardly be realized, while smaller cities offer them a chance to make their dreams(62)(come)true.

On the one hand, although many conditions in bigger cities may seem appealing, bigger cities themselves are not very friendly(63)young people. As many young people swarm into bigger cities, the competition is fierce. To secure a job in a big city, one has to stand out among thousands of (64)(c o m p ete)who are almost equally able. Furthermore, even though the salary in bigger cities seems higher, the living cost is jaw-dropping. It would be very difficult for a college graduate with an average salary to support himself in bigger cities since the living expenses, such as rent, food and transportation, are all considerably higher than(65)(that)in smaller cities. If young people want to settle down in bigger cities permanently, they also have to face the problem of housing, the cost of(66)has recently risen to such a record high that even well-off middle-age people find it a great burden. In one word, living in bigger cities is more like a dream for young people which looks fancy at first glance, but may turn out to be(67)painful nightmare.

On the other hand, the advantages of smaller cities are evident. With lower living cost, smaller cities are apparently more livable for young people. (68)(live)in smaller cities, they do not have to worry about basic accommodation since the rent is more affordable. What's more, smaller cities have more potential. While many markets in bigger cities tend to saturate and therefore opportunities begin to decrease, smaller cities are full of possibilities with unexploited markets. College graduates would have an edge in smaller cities in particular, because they have a better outlook and can seize opportunities in time. Smaller cities give young people a much(69)(big)stage to show their talents and realize their dreams.

In brief, it is apparent that smaller cities, which provide much larger space for both living and development, are a more sensible choice for young people to (70)(realization)their big dreams.
