Matt Green decides to walk every street in all five boroughs(行政区) of New York City. The journey is around 8,000 miles and is expected to take him over two years to

complete.

In 2010, the 31-year-old Matt Green walked across the United States from Rockaway Beach, Queens to Rockaway Beach, Ore. The journey took five months, during which he walked about 20 miles a day. The plan then took a break from the work force. So Mr. Green spent the next year and a half working small jobs while he chose where to walk next. Finally, at noon on December 31, he started from Staten Island with a new idea in his mind: to walk every street in every borough of New York City.

New York is a city of walkers. Many people have walked every street in Manhattan. The historian John McNamara, who died in 2004, walked every street in the Bronx. But Mr. Green believes he is the first to try for every block in all five boroughs—a journey of about 8,000 miles. He thinks that the plan will take him more than two years of full-time walking to complete.

“This walk is a way of understanding a place on its own terms instead of taking someone else’s word for it,” Mr. Green said.
