Unit4

1. enquiry n. 询盘,询价

→★make (or: send, give, fax) sb. an enquiry for sth.向某人询购某种商品,向某人询问某种商品价格

e.g. Thank you for your enquiry of August 1 for 3,000 m/t Dongbei Rice.

→enquire (或inquire)v. 询购,询问★enquire for sth.询购某种商品

2. a promising market = a good market:良好的市场;畅销,好销路

e.g. Garments of good quality and attractive designs can find (enjoy) a good / promising

market everywhere.品质优良,款式新颖的服装在任何地方都会畅销。

Y ou can find a good market here for your products as long as they are reasonably-priced.

只要你们的产品定价合理,就一定能在此处找到销路。

→market n. 行情;市场

The market is strengthening ( rising, advancing, declining).行情在上涨/ 下跌。、

3. terms of payment:付款条件

E.g. It was a very unpleasant surprise to learn that the terms and conditions we finally

agreed upon had been turned down by your company.

★“T erms” is usually used with payment, e.g. payment terms, on CIF terms, usual terms, etc.

It refers to the main subjects. The word “conditions” is commonly used with terms other than payment, e.g. packing conditions, condition of shipment.

4. discount:n. 折扣;贴现→allow(or: grant, give, offer) sb. a discount of … % on sth.

对于某物给予某人百分之几的折扣

e.g. W e may entertain your offer if you allow us a 3% discount.

→at a discount of… 打…折扣

e.g. That store often disposes of old-fashioned goods at different discounts from 5% to 50%.

5. illustrated catalogue:带插图的目录

6. by separate post = under separate cover 另邮,另寄

7. both excellent in quality and reasonable in price

= good quality and low price: 物美价廉

8. irrevocable L/C at sight:不可撤销的即期信用证

9. meet: vt. 满足(需要等);适应;负担(费用等);履行(义务等)

e.g. The manufacturers find it impossible to meet the current demand for the popular type.

Large purchases are being made by business circles to meet the brisk sales in the coming festival.

10.demand: n. 需求(表示对某物的要求,用介词for)

eg. As the demand has become softer, interest is cooling off. 由于需求已减少,兴趣逐渐淡薄.

There is a large demand for this article. / This article is in great demand. 这种商品需求量很大.

Right now, demand for seafood exceeds supply.目前海鲜食品供不应求。

W e regret to say that we are unable to meet your demands to the full for the time being.

11. invite one’s attention to…: 提醒某人注意……

→☆draw / invite / call / direct / attract one’s attention to + noun.

☆draw sb’s attention to + the fact + the clause

e.g. W e wish to call your attention to the fact that we may approach other suppliers for

our requirements if your price should be found on the high side.

希望你们注意,如果你们的价格偏高,我们就会转向别处购买。

Y our attention is drawn to the fact that as the expiry date is coming near, please expedite the shipment, under advice to us.

1. in the market for:想要购买 e.g. W e are in the market for Groundnuts.

→in the market:要买或卖

2. be in the position to…:能够(指处于能做某事的地位)

IV. Translate the following sentences into English:

1. as requested : 按照要求/ 请求

商业信函按对方要求办某事后在通知对方时, 常用as requested 于句首.在语法上可理解为as it is requested 的省略(as 是从属连词),也可理解为as is requested 的省略(as 是关系代词).

Eg. All the goods must be supplied as requested by the importer.

所有货物必须严格按照进口商的要求提供。

→on / upon request : 一经要求就……, 承索即寄……

Eg. Catalogues and brochure will be sent on / upon request. 目录本及说明书承索即寄。

→at the request of / at sb.’s request :应某人的要求,相当于as requested, 或in compliance with your request,或complying with your request 等。

Eg. At your request we make you an offer as follows: 应你方要求兹报盘如下:

★request 作名词时, 后接for或以that 引起的同位语从句(虚拟语气)

eg. W e note your request for samples. 得悉你方要求寄样。

W e note your request that we ( should) send you generous samples.

得悉你方要求我们寄大量样品。

★request 作动词时,宾语可是n. 或动名词,或以动词不定式为宾补的复合宾语,或以that 引起的从句(虚拟语气)。

Eg. W e request your prompt consideration.

W e request that you ( should / would) carefully consider our proposal.

2. herewith:随函附上

e.g. W e are sending you herewith a price list.

→hereby:特此

3. in quadruplicate一式四份

→in duplicate: 一式两份in triplicate : 一式三份

→一式四份及其以上也常说:in four copies, in five copies,…或in four folds, in five folds 4. unreserved acceptance: 毫无保留地接受

5. import licence: 进口许可证

6. dispatch/ despatch:v 发送;迅速办理

7. expire: v. (指某事经过一段时间)期满,到期;终止

e.g. The trade agreement between the two countries will expire next year.

8. execute: v. 执行

→☆execute an order / a contract 执行订单/合同

E.g. Please do your best to execute this order as it will lead to more business.

→execution: n. 执行

Eg. We assure you of punctual execution of your order.

9. fall within the scope of our business activities

= lie / come / be within /under the scope of our business activities

10. plate: v. cover thinly with another metal, esp. gold, silver, or tin 镀,电镀

e.g. The ring wasn’t solid gold --- it was only gold-plated.

11.supply: n. (single.) 供应,供给; (pl.) 供应物,供给物

e.g. Supply now exceeds demand in our market.

The goods you enquire for are in short ( scarce, free, sufficient) supply.

所询商品目前供应短缺(敞开, 充足).

Owing to the shortage of raw materials, the goods are out of supply at present.

V. Translate the following sentences into English:

Unit7

1. offer:n. / v. 报盘

→名词报盘与动词make, send, give, cable 等连用,后接介词for, on 或of, 接for最普遍,接on较少见。买方提及卖方的报盘时,接of为好。

E.g. Please make us an offer for Iron Nails.

W e are working on your offer of 2000 kilos Black Tea.

→动词offer 可以作及物动词,也可以作不及物动词,作及物动词时宾语可以是人也可以是物,还可以是双宾语。

E.g. W e offer you firm the following subject to your reply here October 2.

W e offer firm the following on the same terms and conditions.

W e offer you firm the following on the same terms and conditions.

W e will offer as soon as possible. If you can offer, please fax us.

2. firm offer实盘或确盘。

★实盘主要特点是:对发盘人具有约束力,在实盘规定的有效期内,发盘人不得随意撤回或修改实盘的内容。实盘一经受盘人在有效期内无条件地接受,即无须再经过发盘人的确认,就可以达成交易,构成对双方都有约束力的合同。都有时间的限制,即有效期。

e.g. W e offer you firm subject to reply by 5 p.m., our time, W ednesday, Oct. 3.

W e offer firm CIF, shipment within thirty days, subject to your reply reaching here by 10

a.m., Tuesday, our time.

W e offer firm the following on the same terms and conditions, subject to your reply here within one week from today.

→non-firm offer /offer without engagement

虚盘

★虚盘是发盘人有保留地表示愿意按一定条件达成交易,不受发盘内容的约束,也不做任何承诺,任何时候都可以改变、修改甚至取消。因此,虚盘是不受约束的、试探性的报价,其目的在于了解顾客、了解市场。

虚盘表示方法如下:

→subject to change without notice

如有变更,不做预先通知

subject to our final confirmation

以我方最后确认为条件

subject to goods being unsold/ free

以货物未售出为条件

subject to prior sale以先售为条件without engagement无约束力。

→◇ a combined offer

联合报盘,有两种或两种以上的商品同时报盘

◇ a conditional offer

附有条件的报盘。(如以对方销给我方某种货物为我方报盘的条件)

◇ a free offer自由报盘= a non-firm offer (随时可撤回)

◇an offer subject to market fluctuation随市场价格变动的报盘(non-firm offer) ◇an offer without engagement无约束性的报盘(=a non-firm offer)

◇an offer without obligation无约束性的报盘(=a non-firm offer)

3. competitive: adj. 竞争的,有竞争力的

E.g. To command certain share in the international market, competitive price is

necessary. 要在国际市场拥有一定的份额,商品价格必须具有竞争力。

→competition: n. 竞争

e.g. Only those who can make their products fit for customers’ needs will survive in

the competition.

→compete: vi. 竞争

e.g. They have to compete with a lot of suppliers for Southeast Asia market.

他们要与很多供货商竞争东南亚市场。

→competitor: n. 竞争者

e.g. Our goods are much better than those from our competitors in both quality and price.

4. provided = provided that 倘若;假若

e.g. The goods will be delivered next week provided the drivers are not on strike.

W e accept your offer provided (that) shipment is made in November.

5. stress: v. 着重强调

→stress + that clause stress + n.

e.g. The sellers stressed the importance of establishing L/C in strict accordance with the

stipulations of the contract.

The sellers stressed that the establishment of L/C should be in strict accordance with the stipulations of the contract.

The Chinese Government stressed the point that the technology introduced from abroad should be truly advanced and appropriate to China’s needs.

中国政府强调,引进的国外技术应该是真正先进和适合中国需要的。

→stress: n. 重点

e.g. The sellers put (lay, give) stress on (to) the importance of establishing L/C in strict

accordance with the stipulations of the contract.

6. repeat order:续订订单,续订的货物

pl. : repeats = repeat orders = further orders

A repeat order is an order for a further or additional quantity of the goods preciously

ordered. The price and quantity may be different from the previous order. In case an order is placed on the same terms and conditions as the previous one—with the exception of the time of shipment, which is somewhat different, ---it is called a duplicate order.

→★repeat order:指除交货期外,数量、价格等未必与原订单相同的订单 duplicate order: 指除交货期外,其余条件同原订单完全一样的订单

e.g. If the first order proves satisfactory, we will place with you many repeats/ repeat orders.

As the cost has now advanced a lot, we regret we cannot accept your duplicate order at the original level.

7. as follows = as what follows : (习语),“as”是关系代词,不论句子的主语是单数还是复数,只可用as follows, 不可用as follow.

8. net: adj. 净的

→◇net price 净价(不含佣金和折扣)◇net weight 净重(不含皮重)

◇net profit 净利(不含成本)

9. subject to: 以……为条件,以……为准

→◇subject to our final confirmation以我方最后确认为准

◇subject to your replay reaching here before March 28

以你方答复于3月28日前到达这里为准(复到为准)

◇subject to your immediate acceptance以你方立即接受为条件

e.g. The offer is subject to your reply received by us before 6 p.m. May 17, 2002, our time.

本报盘以我方时间2002年5月17日下午6时前收到你方答复为有效。

The offer is made subject to the goods being unsold.本报盘以货物未被售出为准。

11. on the high / low side : (价格等)偏高/ 偏低

E.g. It seems that your price is on the high side,which prohibits us from placing an

order with you. 你方价格似乎偏高,使我们无法向你们订购。

W e regret being unable to accept your bid as it is on the low side.

抱歉因你递价偏低而无法接受。

Y our price is somewhat on the high side as compared with those of the rival goods.

13. counter-offer: n. 还盘,还价

E.g. Y our counter-offer on walnutmeat is under our serious consideration.

W e regret to learn that you did not accept our counter-offer of US$ 32 per set CFR Lagos for vacuum cleaner.

16. avail oneself of …: 利用

Eg. W e avail ourselves of this opportunity to thank you for your efforts in promoting the friendly business relations between us.
