My husband and I just got back from our one-month honeymoon in Bali. It’s been such a fun month. Icing on the cake was on New Year’s Eve. We landed in the Doha airport at

11:40 pm, and were determined to do something more fun and different, even though we were a little sleepy.

The idea is getting huge bags of chocolates and passing them out to strangers in the Doha airport, along with a lively and cheerful “Happy New Year!” At first, we got rejected, and the staff looked at us strangely(they have strict rules on not accepting gifts—even tiny ones). Passers—by thought we were crazy and trying to sell something, but we persevered(坚持不懈).

We ended up meeting at least 80 strangers and listening to different heart-opening stories. And among them were two Swedish women, who looked terribly exhausted in the Bali airport. And when we shared the chocolates in Doha, we learned that their entire purse, with ATM cards and money in it, had been stolen in Bali, and they had no money on them. We were moved and gave them money to spend the night in the business class waiting room and they were so relieved!

There were other sweet gentle people we met with whom we laughed and shared travel and life stories---cute children, an old British couple, lovely college girls from Australia—people from around the world.

It was a lively New Year’s Eve, but in a different way. Throughout the night, my hear opened, with even more fearlessness… as I wanted it to. It was such a perfect way to usher in(开启)the New Year!

Do you think that puppet show(木偶戏) are just for children? In some parts of the world, like Indonesia, a pupp et show is an activity enjoyed by people of all ages.

At most puppet shows, the audience sits on one side of the screen and the puppeteer (操纵木偶的人) sits on the other. However, at an Indonesian shadow puppet show, the audience can choose which side to sit on. From out front, audience members see shadows of puppets acting out exciting scenes of roman ce or battle. These people enjoy the fantasy that “real” events are taking place.

Behind the scenes, it can be fascinating to see a dalang, or puppeteer, in action. The dalang manipulates puppets made of buffalo hide by moving attached rods(棒) of buffalo horn or bamboo. Each of a puppet’s arms and the main part of its body have their own rods, but its legs are rarely moved on their own.

Each puppet has its own voice and its own way of moving. The “good” puppets usually speak calmly and move gracefully.; the “bad” ones have rough voices and move in a funny way. The stories acted out by the puppets are often based on ancient myths or legends. A specially written puppet show might also celebrate a birth, wedding, or harve st. Sometimes a dalang chooses an old story that he thinks is appropriate for the village where the performance will take place. Before the show, he may ask lo cal people about current events in the village and then use the puppet show to illustrate possible solutions to local problems.

The audience of a shadow puppet show expects to settle in for a long evening. A show may start in the later afternoon and not end until four o’clock the next morning! Children and adults alike may fall asleep in the middle of a show and wake up hours later to find it still going on. Of course, the dalang must remain alert throughout the show. One dalang remarked,”I have no real sense of time until it’s all over.”

29.The text would be of most interest to readers looking for information about _______.

A. forms of entertainment in other cultures

B. how to create their own puppet show

C. how to make their own puppets

D. everyday life in Indonesia

30.How is an Indonesian puppet show different from most other puppet shows?

A. A dalang may take a rest during a show.

B. People can leave in the middle of a show.

C. It is an activity enjoyed by people of all ages.

D. The audience can choose to sit on either side of the screen.

31.What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?

A. The “good” pu ppets move in a funny way.

B. The dalang attempts to personalize the puppet show for the audience.

C. The audience determines the puppets’ voice and way of moving.

D. A dalang offers solutions to local problems before the show.

The Republic of Vanuatu is an island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean. It was one of the poorest nations in the region. Within the last five years, however, it has become a hot spot for adventure travelers. In 2006 it was voted the happiest place on Earth. The reason is not that Vanuatu are the richest but that Vanuatu has white-sand islands, clear waters, the world’s most accessible live volcano, great diving and food that grows faster than it can be picked.

With a population of about 221,000, Vanuatu has 113 languages, which is a result of 3,000 years of immigration from many Pacific countries. Dear Mr. Hans,

I really regret to say that I cannot attend the lecture to share thoughts about The Three-body Problem in your apartment this Saturday afternoon, and I am writing this letter to express my apology.

The reason for my absence is that I have to meet an English teacher from America at the airport this Saturday afternoon. The plane is due to arrive then and it is impossible to rearrange the time. It is really a pity that I will miss such a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas about the novel, which has won the 2015 Hugo Award.

I am wondering if you could send me a summary of the discussion next Monday, for I believe it will be interesting and informative.

I am truly sorry for my absence and hope you will accept my sincere apologies. Thank you!

Yours

For example, when I meet with a problem I can’t work out after a few attempts, I will turn to my tutors there. Besides, by participating in activities such as talent shows on such websites, I have enjoyed myself and gained confidence. Of course, it is unwise to rely wholly on such online learning apps. However, they can serve as good helpers to us if we learn to employ their advantages and avoid the disadvantages. These apps, easy to access, are playing an increasingly important role in some students’ study. However, results are sometimes unsatisfactory.
