The advantages and disadvantages of college students----taking part-time job

Nowadays it has become fashionable for college students to taking part-time job in their spare time. I think this trend has advantages and disadvantages as well.

The advantages of college students taking part-time job are as follows : By taking a part-time job, college students can earn some money for their daily necessities, so they can ease their families' financial burden and become economically independent. And by taking a part-time job, college students can get some working experiences and know how to use their knowledge in practical work , how to cooperate with the others and how to deal with some problems they may face. These experiences are surely helpful to their future work after graduation. However, the disadvantages of college students taking a part-time job can not be neglected. The main disadvantages are that if they spend too much time on their part-time jobs, their academic studies will be affected. They may not have enough time to digest what they have learned in class and they may not have enough time to extracurricular organized by their college after class.

Since this trend has both advantages and disadvantages, college students should be careful when they decide whether they should take a part-time job or not. My suggestion is that they had better strike a balance between academic studies and a part-time job.

The main difference between my college life and my middle school life

If people ask me such a question what do you think is the main difference between my college life and my middle school life? My answer is always the same: the main difference is that in college I enjoy a great degree of independence.

I prefer college life to middle school mainly because I'm independent both in daily life and in my academic studies. In college I will arrange my daily life by myself and make decisions of my own will. As for academic study, I have plenty of free time after class for self-study and learn whatever I am interested in. To be successful in all the courses I have to learn, I even can have a workable plan of my own. While in middle school, I lived a dependent life. My daily are arranged by my parents. I even could not decide what to eat and what to wear, for my parents usually had the final say. And I was jammed with what the teachers wanted to feed me , without considering whether I really want to learn or not. By comparison I should say I love the independent life in college. In college I feel I am a grown-up.

In short, my college life is quite different from my middle school life. In college, I am much more independent in my daily life and study. To those new comers, I would suggest that they rely on themselves and be an independent man.

More pressure from academic studies does good to us

There has been a heated debate about the effect of pressure from academic studies on us students in our college. Some of my fellow students argue that it is not good for us to study under great pressure. Personally I do not agree upon this view.

My argument that more pressure does good to us is based on the following two reasons. First, no pressure means no progress. With the development of our society, competition among people grows more and more fierce, college students are no exception. They must learn how to deal with future challenges foreseeable even today. Under pressure, each student has to work hard to lay a solid foundation of his or her specialities. Companies are likely to employ those who have done well in their special field of study. Therefore, in college the top ones will make great efforts to take the lead, whereas the low achievers will do their utmost to catch up. Second, no pressure means no self-discipline. The teachers do give assignments from time to time, yet they have not impose enough pressure on the students. As a result, quite a few of us idle away their time by playing video games, playing with Internet, or playing cards. All these do not merely happen on weekends. With more academic pressure upon the students, they will not cherish their time and have self-restrictions with their study and even self-behavior.

In summary, I believe more pressure from academic studies does a great deal of good to us college students. If we treat pressure with a correct attitude, we will surely make more progress in our study.

One way to solve the problem

It is now generally accepted that vehicles are a major source of air pollution in cities. Some solutions have been proposed, such as reducing the number of private vehicles, fully promoting public transportation means and using lead-free petrol, etc. However, my advice is that we may electricity-generated vehicles instead as a solution to the problem.

The substitution of petrol with electricity is advantages for at least two reasons. The first reason is that electricity is clean. We know the use of petrol has prove to be the most serious cause of air pollution. But if electricity is applied, no pollution will be produced. The second reason is that electricity is almost inexhaustible. Since many ways of generating electricity are available now, the resort to electricity may free us from the worry that the power needed for vehicle use may run out someday. As a result, we will not have to impose restrictions on the use of vehicles. Nor will we need to trim down the number.

To sum up , using electricity as power is an ideal solution to the problem of vehicle pollution. It can both keep the air clean and permanently satisfy the needs of vehicle users.

A major advantage of advertising on television

Every time we turn on TV , we all encounter beautiful girls smiling and dancing with fashionable cell phones; handsome young men jumping and swirling with their shining shoes; pretty babies singing and gigglig for supper milk. Although different people have different ideas about the advantages and disadvantages of TV ads. I will say the advantages weigh more.

The major advantages of advertising on TV lies in its convenience. advertising on TV can save our time. We can know directly where we can get the goods we need. For example,it is unnecessary for us to spend much time trying to find them from one shop to another. Besides, it can also save our money. We can compare the similar products advertised on TV and finally get the best and cheapest one, without going out or travelling a long distance to get what our friends suggested we should buy. What's more, we can obtain much information about certain products faster than from other media with its beautiful sounds and vivid picture. From the above mentioned reasons, we can see it is very convenient for us to know what products are available, how much we should pay for them and where to get them by watching the advertising on TV.

The importance of extracurricular activities

Extracurricular activities as part of college life are very important for the all-round development of college students. However, I find there are still more students who neglect the importance of these activities. Evidently, extracurricular activities are important in many ways. Firstly, such activities can enrich students' college life . As an effective way of both physical and mental relaxation, extracurricular activities provide students with different opportunities to enjoy themselves and relax themselves. For example, after class students can participate in various ball games or colorful recreational activities. Secondly, such activities can help develop students' sense of teamwork and cooperation with each other. For instance, when involved in group activities, students will realize the limitations of their individual effort and the strength of group work. Lastly, such activities provide students with an opportunity to be sociable, which is surely helpful for them to communicate with different people in the future after they graduate from college.

In brief, extracurricular activities are of great importance to college students. Only when college students are fully aware of the importance, can they really enjoy their college life and have an all-round development of their physical strength and mentality.

Travel broadens our mind

It has become a fashion for us Chinese people to go travelling during the

long holidays in recent years. People either travel abroad or go sightseeing within the country. In fact, travel has been turned into a part of life. The significance of travel is obvious :it can broaden our mind.

It is quite definite that travel can broaden our mind. Last summer, I visited Tai Mountain, a world known for natural scenery, and Qu Fu, a world famous for historical and cultural city. On the top of Tai Mountain I was deeply moved by the natural beauty, picturesque scenes and especially the inscriptions carved on the rocks by so many historical figures, who so profoundly express their love of our country. In Qu Fu, I was thoroughly attracted our great culture and long history of civilization, especially the school of elite thought by Confucious as the greatest educator. I felt very proud of cultural lineage. As a student of English from a Normal University, I was determined to introduce our great country with so many natural sceneries and so many places of historical relics to the world.

As an old saying goes: travelling ten thousand miles and reading ten thousand books is the top ideal for people. Travel really opens our mind because it enables us to know about the beautiful scenery, the long history and great culture of a nation. Remember every time you will experience something new in mind

The best way to stay healthy

Nowadays people are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of health. And they have different ways to stay healthy. For example, some exercise everyday: others try to keep a balanced diet. In my opinion, to do physical exercise is the best way.

My suggestion that Physical exercise is the best way for people to stay fit is based on the following two reasons. The first reason is that physical exercise can help to reduce one's unnecessary fat and weight.Medical experts have reported that the redundancy of fat is one of the causes of various disease, some of which are even fatal. The second reason is that physical exercise can keep people a good shape of figure. For example, by doing physical exercise, man can have a strong body and look cool;white women can have a slim figure and look pretty. That is why there are so many people doing physical exercise in the parks, on the sports ground and in the various body-building clubs.

In short, I believe the best way to keep fit is to do physical exercise. We may bear the following in mind: to do physical exercise every day, you will keep the doctor away.

The importance of keeping a good mood

Modern people are supposed to endure a lot of pressure, from education, career, or family. There are often tragic stories in the newspapers about the people who went insane or some who committed suicide. Those

tragedies once again indicate how important it is to keep a good mood. Keeping a good mood under whatsoever circumstances is important in at least two aspects. The first one is that keeping a good mood can help people possess a right attitude towards various difficulties and challenges. Self-confidence is always the best way for people to get out of the difficult situation. For example, some people have failed in business for several times and now they are in deep debt, but they never give up their hope and still believe they have the ability to be successful. This self-confidence will surely lead them to success someday. The second one is that keeping a good mood can help people put disappointment and frustration in the right perspective. Thinking that failure is the mother of success, people can well survive the temporary blows and look forward to the right future.

Though the above analysis, we can realize how important it is to keep a good mood in order to face the pressure or challenges of modern society. When most people are aware of the importance of physical health, we must simultaneously remind them of the significance of mental health.

Will phones kill letter writing

According to a recent survey made by China Daily, about 200 million Chinese are using phones as their daily communications means in steady of writing letters to each other. So some people say that phones will kill

letter writing. But I don't think so.

My argument that phones will not kill letter writing lies in at least three aspects. First, letter writing as a traditional way of communication still has some advantage over phones. For example, if people want to express something confidential to their close friend, they will turn to letter writing. Another example is that rural workers who are working far away from their hometown are more likely to write letters to their families than to make phone calls for the purpose of saving money. Second, letter writing is more authoritative and formal in some way. For instance, people who are doing business will write formal business letters to do a deal; people who want to recommend or introduce someone else will write letter of recommendation or letter of introduction; people who want to apply for a scholarship will write a letter of application of friendship among friends. People always write letters to show their everlasting love and affection. All in all, letter writing is still very popular among people, it is still a good way for people to communicate with each other and it is impossible to be killed by phones. Just do as the saying goes if you don't want to be forgotten by your friend, then take out your pen and write him a letter.

My idea of university arts festival

In recent years, university arts festival has become an indispensable part of the university students' life. But as far as its contents are concerned,

there is still much room for improvement.

To make the university arts festival more colorful and interesting, the following contents should be included. First, more students should be involved in the festival. Anyway, a university arts festival is not merely for a small number of gifted students to demonstrate their talents for singing , dancing, drawing, playing musical instruments and performing on the stage, etc. It should attract the average students, who, in the past, were treated as the passive spectators, to play an active role in it. Second, the intercollegiate exchange of university arts festival activities should be advocated. Through the exchange, the students from different universities or colleges may develop a better mutual communication and understanding. Most importantly, such an exchange can make university arts festivals more attractive and more festive.

In short, though university arts festival is very popular among the Chinese universities, we still have much to do to make it perfect. If we want to make it a sustainable appeal to all the students, we have to infuse something fresh into it.

What lesson we should draw from the outbreak of SARS

The sudden outbreak of SARS swept over some parts of China last summer. Through the converted efforts of the people and the government, we won the battle against it at last. Now it is time for us to think about

what lessons we should draw from the its outbreak.

The outbreak of SARS serves a good lesson to both the people and the government. The most remarkable change people after the outbreak is that they set more value on the protection of their living environment and spend more time on physical exercise in the open air. This is the lesson they draw from the outbreak: without a strong body, their beautiful dreams are merely dreams. The outbreak of SARS has provoked them to cherish their life. As for the government, the outbreak of SARS has revealed its drawbacks in public health system and has help it change its stale working style and make their polices more transparent. The outbreak also betrayed the lack of early precautions and quick response from our public health system to tackle the emergent issue.

We must learn the lessons from the outbreak of SARS. That is: cherish our life, make our government more transparent, and set up a perfect public health system. Only by doing so, can we win the battle against any other outbreak of calamities.

Examinations---harmful or useful?

In China, July is called ''Dark July'' because each year in July students have to take various exams. Quite a few dread them, worry about them, and stay up all night studying for them. However, I am not one of them. On the contrary I love to take exams because they are very useful.

Examinations are still conducted everywhere, and, to a great degree, they are useful. First, they force students to study all the courses well. Usually after examination the top students are encouraged to go further ahead in their study; while the low achievers will have to study hard to catch up. Second, they offer students an opportunity to demonstrate how well they have learned. After different examinations, students will see on which course they have to work harder or in which course they have made greater progress. Thus they will know their strong points and shortcomings. And the teachers will also know their students better and adjust their teaching materials and even teaching methods. So examinations are both beneficial and useful to both the teachers and students.

As a college student, I think, the proper attitude toward exams is that we should take advantage of their positive aspects. If we are fully prepared for the courses to be examined, we can benefit a lot from these exam.

My views on Examinations

In most schools and college the examination is used as a chief means of deciding whether a student succeeds or fails in mastering a particular subject. Although it does the job quite efficiently, its side effects are also enormous.

The most undesirable effect is that examinations encourage bad study

habits. As the examination score is the only criterion for his academic performance, a student is driven to memorize mechanically rather than to think creatively. Examinations do not motivate a student to obtain more knowledge, but to restrict his reading; they do not enable him to study consistently throughout the semester, but to induce cramming during exam week. Examinations also lower the standards of teaching. Since teachers themselves are often judged by examinations results, they are reduced to training their students in exam techniques. And no subjects can be taught successfully merely for the purpose of passing examinations. Personally, I don't think that examinations can contribute anything really important to the students' academic development. My suggestion is that educational authorities should devise more efficient and reliable measures to evaluate students' abilities of analysing and solving problems.

Which weighs more----school brand or major

There is always a heated discussion among students about which weighs more---school brand or major. The answer turns to be different. However, I prefer to major.

There are two main reasons to explain my view. Firstly, the most important motivation is for study is interest. If I want to be enrolled into a famous university only for its fame or reputation, without considering my major, I will not make great achievements in my academic study because

all the courses I have to learn are not what I really want to learn. Thus, to select a major one is most interested in is more important than to select school brand. Secondly, a good major always implies what I will learn is very useful. Therefore it will arouse my interest to study more. And I will try my best to concentrate my mind on my study. Thirdly, a good major also means that after graduation I can easily get a job that meets with what I have learned in college.

In a word, school brand is nothing more than a kind of fame. But major is something very practical. Therefore in my opinion, major weighs more.

Which is more important: work or money?

Would you quit your job if you made a fortune or had a lot of money? In a recent poll conducted by the Xinmin Evening, quite a few people said they would do so. They explained that they had been exhausted by the intensity and boringness of their working life. If they could be free from the worry about the balance between their incomes and expenses, they would rather stay at home and relax themselves.

It is true that a substantial sum on the bank account will provide people with a fairly wealthy life, yet for many people work is the chief satisfaction of life. In the process of their work, they will find great pressure in the cooperation with others, the applause from others and even the help they offer to others. These happy moments are

indispensable in their life, and quite a lot people even wish to sacrifice their material comfort to seize the satisfactions of work.

The reason to account for all of this is quite simple: human being are different from wild animals in that they would naturally pursue for a high standard of life after their basic physical demands are met. A job is much more than a paycheck. Doing something one likes can contribute greatly to his or her happiness and contentment.

A boom in adult education

Every weekend sees Mr.Li, the young boss of private-owned computer company, hustling in Beijing University all the day, attending his MBA course. Mr.Li's case is not unique, and now more and more city adults spend their leisure time trying to improve themselves at school or college. There are a number of reasons for people to go back to their education. Some people are doing it to acquire another degree or diploma to impress the society. To them more knowledge, or rather, more credentials means more opportunities for better jobs and quicker promotion. Other people, especially those who are laid off or out of employment go to the vocational school to prepare to return to the job market. They are eager for new skills so that they can be qualified for the job in retail trade, administration, education and other service categories to which they are strange because most of them are blue-collar workers in the factory.

There are also people who came to such courses as Chinese traditional medicine, painting, calligraphy and photography. As their working weeks decline people begin to have time to fulfill their old dream or their heart's desire.

Out of necessity or out of interest, people go back to school for the common goal---to improve themselves, and this boom in adult education, in return, helps to raise the intellectual standard of the whole society.

School-age children drop out---a problem we have to tackle

It is reported that in remote areas in China about one million school-age children drop out of school each year and 80% of the drop-outs are from the families which are too poor to keep their children at school.

To tackle the problem, the government has launched the Hope Project. It has helped thousands of children go back to school. But in my opinion it is far from enough. In order to change this situation completely, the central government should set aside an adequate account of money for education, especially for elementary education in these areas. And also, the local governments should establish laws to endure that no children should drop out of schools as elementary school education is compulsory in our country, and the poor families should be aided by local governments so that they can send their children to school. Besides, the whole society should be encouraged to donate some money to these poor

families or establish certain non-government foundations for these drop-outs.

To sum up, so long as our central and local governments and the whole society pay enough attention to this problem and take effective actions, this problem will be solved in near future.

Why I came to college

Why have I chosen to attend college?----a question I put to myself many times in the past two academic years. But the answer is always the same:college education is something I truely want to do in my life and it is worthwhile.

There are many reasons for my choosing to attend college. The main one is that I can enjoy learning and gaining knowledge. I remember that as my high school education was drawing to a close, my desire for continuing to learn became increasingly strong, and the decision was naturally made when I realized I would not be content to simply end my educational career with high school and enter the working world so soon.

I decided to enter college not only because it i a place where I can continue to seek scientific truths, but also it is a place where I can be exposed to various new, original ideas. It helps to expand my horizons and make me well-rounded person. Of course I must admit that I chose to attend collge also because I felt it was a practical and necessary step I

took to ensure a secure future for myself. For in today's world, a college education has become almost essential if one wishes to complete in job market and to find a satisfactory position.

For these reasons, I never mind spending so many nights on paperwork; I never consider myself miserable and unfairly burdened; and I never think college education is a waste if time and money.

Should class attendance be required?

Required class attendance is so commonly practiced at college and universities that many teachers and even students themselves simply assume it is a good thing. In fact, required class attendance does more harm than good.

There are several reasons that colleges and universities should not require the students' class attendance. First, rigid attendance policies do not benefit students' studies. For example, a student may have to give up a lecture which he find vital to his studies simply because he dare not run the risk of being penalized for poor attendance in his course. Second, the lectures of some teachers are not always constructive. A students should be allowed to decide for herself whether an in-class experience is worthwhile when his teacher merely repeats material from the textbook or wastes class by telling irrelevant stories. Finally and most importantly, there is no proven correlation between attendance and performance in a

course. A student may never miss a single attendance in a course, but who knows whether or not he is just sitting there daydreaming all the time. Required class attendance, may secure one hundred percent for a course, but it does not make much sense.

The entry of education into market---a good thing or a bad thing

As the socialist market economy in China is expanding and becoming overwhelming, education is becoming more closely related to the market. Schools, colleges and universities have to find ways to support themselves. Personally, I think the entry of education into market is a good thing.

The reasons for education to enter the market are as follows: first, as a developing country, China is not likely to invest a huge amount of money in education in the near future. Education has to turn to the market to find its own way. Second, many Chinese people have realized that what the students get though education is an invisible and valuable product. Students with higher degrees will find it easier to find jobs in the job market, and vacancies with high salaries are only open to those who have got better education. People feel it is beneficial to invest their money in education.

In reality, the entry of education into market is accordance with the law of market economy. It does good both to the nation and the individual

However, some people may be trapped in a situation where they put the cart before the horse. Disappointedly, what some people do on festivals is not to communicate with their relatives and friends but to hold their cell phones and fix their eyes on the screen all day long, just in order to grab red envelops. For my part, what really matters is the relationship instead of the money. Essentially speaking, gifting red envelopes is beyond reproach. Festivals offer precious opportunities for us to send good wishes to our beloved ones and what we should do is to cherish these chances rather than to ignore the essential connotation of the festivals. Anyhow, kinship, friendship and other relationships are above anything and we ought to make every endeavor lest the profound cultural atmosphere of traditional festivals should decline.

Of these choices, the students who have found a job only take up50%. In contrast, students who pursue further study by taking the postgraduate entranceexam or going abroad have increased greatly than before, with the total percentage of 47%.Indeed, this phenomenon is also quite common in other universities. Above all, with theenrollment extension of universities, college graduates are facing the severe employmentsituation, which forces them to find another way out. Moreover, in information age, knowledgeis updated very rapidly. Many college students find their knowledge is not enough for theirfuture career. Besides, some college students would not like to enter into the complicatedsociety and want to escape from the reality temporarily by going to further study. Though taking the postgraduate entrance exam or going abroad for further study isa good choice, it is not necessarily true of everyone, because it might involve many factors, such as your future career direction, your economic condition. Therefore, we should take a fullaccount before we make our decisions. 手机影响学习吗Do Mobiles Distract Study Therever you are, you can see many people equipped with mobile phones. It seems that the world becomes smaller nowadays. You could be found wherever you are so long as you take the mobile phone with you. And mobile phones are also becoming a new scene on campus. Students think it is extremely convenient for them to communicate with the outside world by using mobile phones, especially when they are hunting for jobs, so they call it an essential investment. Education experts analyze the entry of mobile phones into campus as an indication of social progress. And mobile phones have been considered advanced for its attractive functions. the youth of today send messages, surf on the net, listen to music and even take photos by using their mobile phones. To some extent, it reflects that college students are more and more involved in this modern society, rather than pedants in the “ivory tower”. As a coin has two sides, the mobile phone, while providing convenience, causes trouble too. In classrooms, the untimely ringing interrupts lectures and destroys the atmosphere of study, so it prompts many complaints. And the mobile phone users themselves also suffer. Therefore, we need to think more about how to integrate mobile phones properly into our lives.
