Completing Forty Years of Publishing

The letter on the following page is reprinted from the?rst issue of Metallurgical Transactions—January1970.That was40years ago,and the journal(with two changes in name)is still going strong.

The?rst name change of the journal occurred in1975when we split it into two journals:one journal(Metallurgical Transactions A)dealing with Physical Metallurgy and Materials Science and the other(Metallurgical Transactions B) dealing with Process Metallurgy and Materials Processing Science. These journals have had red and blue covers, respectively, since then.

The second name change came in1994with the addition of the term‘‘and Materials’’to the title of both journals. This was done in response to the expanding areas of interest in our founding societies. We have kept and will continue to keep the term‘‘Metallurgical’’in its title since that is not only our heritage, but also the niche that we believe we still?ll in the world of publications.

The?rst Editor of the journal was Prof.Gerhard Derge of Carnegie Institute of Technology(1970–77)(see photograph).Since then,Dr.Edwin Ruh(1978–83)and Prof.Tony Thompson(1984–88)have been Editors in Chief of the journal.I have edited both journals since1988;we have Dr.Srikumar Banerjee,Prof.Warren Garrison,Jr.,Prof. Thaddeus Massalski, and Prof.Tresa Pollock as our current Associate Editors for MMTA and Prof.Alan Cramb and Prof.Richard Fruehan as the current Associate Editors for MMTB.

We are grateful for the continuing support of our Key Readers, reviewers, and readers. In a day of multiplying journals,we are glad that our two sponsoring societies continue to join together to oversee the publication of our journal.

Although we celebrate40years of publishing this journal,it is important to recognize,as noted in the letter on the following page, that we that we are heirs of two much older journals, namely the Transactions of the Metallurgical Society of AIME and the Transactions Quarterly of the American Society of Metals.Trans.TMS of AIME started publishing in1871and the Trans Q of ASM was?rst published in1920.Our heritage is long, and we continue to plan to meet the needs of our readership for just as long in the future.

Look for some special features this year, including an issue on Materials for Energy Applications and reprints of some of our best papers.
