How can we measure intelligence(智力)? Experts are not completely certain about the answer to this question. However, in solving some problems, monkeys are better than other animals and this is agreed to be a sign of their high intelligence.

In one experiment, the animals had to reach the food at the other side of a fence(栅栏)by walking round. Monkeys quickly saw the solution(解决方法). Dogs were not so certain, while hens simply rushed at the fence, trying to reach the food directly. In the second step of the experiment, the animal could not walk round, but there was a rope connected to the food. Many cities around the world today are heavily polluted. Careless methods of production and lack of consumer demand for environment friendly products have contributed to the pollution problem. One result is that millions of tons of glass, paper, plastics, and metal containers are produced, and these are difficult to get rid of.

However, today, more and more consumers are choosing “green” and demanding that the products they buy should be safe for the environment. Before they buy a product, they ask questions like these: “ Will these shampoo damage the environment?” “ Can this metal container be reused or can it only be used once?”

A recent study showed that two of five adults now consider the environmental safety of a product before they buy it. This means that companies must now change the way they make and sell their products to make sure that they are “green”, that is, friendly to the environment.

Only a few years ago, it was impossible to find green products in supper markets, but not there are hundreds. Some supermarket products carry labels (标签) to show that the product is green. Some companies have made the manufacturing (生产) of clean and safe products their main selling point and emphasize it in their advertising.

The concern for a safer and cleaner environment is making companies rethink how they do business. No longer will they public accept the old attitude of “buy it, use it, throw it away, and forget it.” The public pressure is on, and gradually business is cleaning up its act.

I have worked all my life. I?ve done men?s jobs. I?ve done everything. I have used screw drivers, electric drills, and punch presses. I really know what it means to do men?s work. What gets me is, you work all your life like a dog. You pay all your taxes into these government programs. But still, when you need help, the people that you are paid to help you, they act like it?s coming out of their own pockets.

My husband George had a stroke not long ago. I?ve always worked all my life and I never have

to do this before, but when George had the stroke I knew I needed help. I had to quit my job to take care of him.

So I went down to the welfare and told them I needed help. We were living with my son at the time. The welfare people said that since we were staying there, he had to take care of us. If we wanted help, we?d have to move out. The trouble was we didn?t have anything at all, and George was in hospital.

When I knew I needed some help, I went up here to this place called Hub Center where they?re supposed to help people. Well, I told this young kid that I was working there that we were starving and didn?t have the money to pay our rent or buy our medicine. Well, he started writing something down on a slip of paper, and he wrote for t he longest time. Then he gave it to me and said, “Take this paper t 1631 Vine Street and they will give you a sandwich.”

I said, “Thanks for nothing, kid.”

I never was so embarrassed in all my life. I thought, well, I know I have to be going crazy. I just have to be, this just can?t be happening.

The old idea that child prodigies(神童) “burn themselves”or “overtax their brains”in the early years, therefore, are prey to failure and ( at worst) mental illness is just a myth. As a matter of fact, the outstanding thing that happens to bright children is that they are very likely to grow into bright adults.

To find this out, 1,500 gifted persons were followed up to their thirty-five yea with these results: On adult intelligence tests, they score as high as they did as children. They were , as a group, in good health, physically and mentally. Eighty-four percent of their group were married and seemed content with their life.

About 70 percent had graduated from colleges, though only 30 percent had graduated with honors. A few had even fluked out (退学), but nearly half of these had returned to graduate.

Of the men, 80 percent were in one of the professions or in business, managers or semi-professional jobs. The women who had remained single had offices, business, or professional; occupations.

The group had published 90 books and 1,500 articles in scientific, scholarly, and literary magazines and had collected more than 100 patents(专利).

In a material way they didn?t so badly either. Average income was considerably higher among the gifted people, especially the men, than for the country as a whole, despite their comparative youth when last surveyed.

In fact, far from being strange, maladjusted(难以适应)people locked in an ivory tower, most of the gifted were turning their early promises into practical reality.

A. how many gifted children turned successful when they grew up

B. that bright children were unlikely to be physically and mentally healthy

C. the gifted children were most likely to become bright grown-ups

Most of the diary is a record of big events in Philadelphia. It also includes a description of British soldiers burning Washington .D. C in the war of 1812.She describes President James Madison on horseback as "perfectly shaking with fear" during the troubled days. Computer people talk a lot about the need for other people to become"computer-literate." But not all experts (专家) agree that this is a good idea.

One pioneer, in particular, who disagrees is David Tebbutt, the founder of Computertown UK. Although many people see this as a successful attempt to bring people closer to the computer. David does not see it that way. He says that Computertown UK was formed for just the opposite reason, to bring computers to people and make them "people-literate."

David Tebbutt thinks Computertowns are most successful when tied to a computer club but he insists there is an important difference between the two. The clubs are for people who have some computer knowledge already. This frightens away non-experts, who are happier going to Computertowns where there are computers for them to experiment on with experts to encourage them and answer any questions they have. They are not told what to do. They find out that the computer experts have to learn not to tell people about computers but have to be able to answer all questions people ask. People don't have to learn computer terms(术语), but the experts have to explain in plain language. The computers are becoming "people-literate."

***1. Which of the following is David Tebbutt's ides on the relationship between people and computers?

A. Computer learning should be made easier.

B. There should be more computer clubs for experts.

C. People should work harder to master computer use.

D. Computers should be made cheaper so that people can afford them.

Work stress levels "lower" in UK

UK workers are among the least stressed in Europe, a survey has suggested.

Just 20% of British workers found their workplace "too stressful" compared with an average of 27% across Europe.

Switzerland and Sweden suffered the highest levels of anxiety in their job (33%), the survey by global recruitment(招募) agency Kelly Services found.

The poll of 19,000 people across 12 countries also found that male workers, older staff and those in steady jobs were under the greatest pressure.

"A certain amount of stress is inevitable and can be a good thing when it pushes people beyond their comfort zone to work harder and smarter," said Steve Girdler, marketing director of Kelly Services UK.

"But high levels of prolonged stress are not good because they have an effect on productivity(生产效率) and are associated with physical and emotional illness," he warned.

The group also found stress increased significantly with age - rising from 19% in the 15-24 age group to 23% for those aged 45 and above.

The report suggested these workers could also be suffering from added stress at home and increased responsibility.

Those working the longest hours found their job the most stressful - 18% for those working 30 hours or less, 34% for those clocking on for 41-50 hours, and 50% for those working longer than 51 hours.

Kelly Services also uncovered a close link between stress and job satisfaction.

For those workers who said they faced too much stress, just 28% were happy in their jobs, while for those with "just the right amount of stress" happiness levels jumped to 65%.

The findings suggest staff enjoy jobs where they face challenges that push them to "learn new skills".

One of my favorite hobbies is exchanging old-fashioned, paper-with-a-stamp-on-it postcards with random strangers around the world. The Postcrossing Project was created by Paulo Magalhaes in 2005. He liked getting mails—especially postcards. He thought others did, too—but how could he connect with them? That's when he came up with the idea of an online platform (https://www.wendangku.net/doc/277138416.html,): There, postcard lovers like me can sign up to send a postcard to someone who has registered online, and receive a postcard in return. Along with a randomly selected address, participants get a unique code to put on the postcard. When the postcard arrives, the recipient registers that code with the site, which then causes the sender's address to be given to another postcrosser in turn. In practice, this means that for nearly every postcard I send (a few get lost in the mail) I get one back. And since I never know who will send me a card or where in the world they live, every trip to the mailbox holds the potential for a wonderful surprise. Privacy-conscious Americans might worry about sharing their address with strangers overseas. But postcrossers are friendly, polite, respectful folks—in more than 450 cards exchanged, I've yet to have a bad experience. On days when the international news is depressing, postcrossing is my comfort. There's nothing like getting a card from a child in China just learning to write in English, or a grandmother in Belarus describing her most recent gardening success to remind me that we truly are members of one global family, far more similar than we are different. It seems like such a small thing to send out a postcard. But as travel and communication technology continue to shrink the world, it's important to remember that it isn't just for diplomats and politicians to represent our country anymore. All of us have the power—and perhaps the responsibility—to be ambassadors, to show the best of your country to the world. And it's good to know that what you need to accomplish this is not necessarily complicated or expensive. It can be as simple as a postcard. (1)Why did Paulo set up https://www.wendangku.net/doc/277138416.html,? A. To discuss personal hobbies with strangers. B. To exchange postcards with others in the world C. To collect different postcards from other countries. D. To provide a platform for communication online. (2)According to the passage, postcrossers __________. A. don't know who will send them postcards B. are sure to get a postcard back immediately C. often choose a receiver's address carefully D. register every postcard they receive online (3)What did the writer learn from postcrossing? A. The international news is usually depressing. B. Americans are more conscious about privacy. C. Postcrossers sometimes describe their bad experience.

A “You can use me as a last resort(选择), and if nobody else volunteers, then I will do it.” This was an actual reply from a parent after I put out a request for volunteers for my kids lacrosse(长曲棍球)club. I guess that there's probably some demanding work schedule, or social anxiety around stepping up to help for an unknown sport. She may just need a little persuading. So I try again and tug at the heartstrings. I mention the single parent with four kids running the show and I talk about the dad coaching a team that his kids aren’t even on … At this point the unwilling parent speaks up,“Alright. Yes, I’ll do it.” I’m secretly relieved because I know there’s real power in sharing volunteer responsibilities among many. The unwilling parent organizes the meal schedule, sends out emails, and collects money for end-of-season gifts. Somewhere along the way, the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team. The coach is able to focus on the kids while the other parents are relieved to be off the hook for another season. Handing out sliced oranges to bloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal. Still, most of us volunteers breathe a sigh of relief when the season comes to a close. That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the same people keep coming back for more: Connecting to the community(社区)as you freely give your time, money, skills, or services

As he observed her and spoke with her, he admired her more and more. He showered her with kindness and words of praise until she consented to be his wife. Not long after they were married, however, the beautiful woman found out that she was more the object of his artistic interest than of his affections. When he admired her classic beauty, it was as though he were standing in front of a work of art rather than in front of a human being to whom he had pledged his love and promised his life. And soon he expressed his great desire to put her rare beauty on canvas. “Please sit for me in the workroom,” he pleaded, “and I will make your beauty permanent. The work will be my masterpiece!” She was humble and patient as well as flattered by his words, so she said, “Yes, my love. I will be happy to sit for you.” So the beautiful, young wife of the art ist sat meekly for hours in his studio, not complaining. Day after day she sat patiently, smiling as she posed, because she loved him and because she hoped that he would see her love in her smile and obedience. She sometimes wanted to call out to him, “Ple ase love me and want me as a person rather than as an object!” But instead, she spoke nothing but words which pleased him. At length, as the labor drew to close, the painter became wilder in his passion for his work. He only rarely turned his eyes from the canvas to look at his wife. Heaven is the sphere of the permanent, perfect, spiritual and holy.(概念或中心句+具体解释的模式是绝大部分英语论说文的展开模式,关键是中心句的辨认。 Heaven) 2 Traditional Chinese thought has no place for the idea of a creation(本句为论点,从上文的西方思想到本段的中国思想,明显是比较).
