When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect(尊敬) elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States.

I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle -aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure the y got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great di spleasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about h ow sensitive(敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description “old”. I then walked back to the table a nd apologized to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry.

In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect old er people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.

However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person i s going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from gr owing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had fai led to stay young. I had told them something th ey didn?t want to hear.

After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don?t respect them any more;

I still respect them, but now I don?t show my feelings through words.

I?ve loved my mother?s desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat doing l etters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the more wonderful thing in the world.

Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,”she?d said again, “it?s for Elizabeth. ”

They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional(易动感情的)”. But she lived “on the surface(表面)”.

As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive(原谅) me.

I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.

My hope turned to disappointment(失望), then little interest and, finally, peace—it seemed that nothing ha ppened. I couldn?t be sure that the lette r had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I cou ld stop trying to make her into someone she was not.

It is important for us to keep t he balance of nature.

Not many years ago, some farmers were worried because hawks were taking many of their chicken. The f armers didn?t know what to do. Finally they went to the country officials and asked for help.

“Kill the hawks,” the officials said, “We will even pay for them,” so the farmers began to think of ways to kill the hawks.

The farmers killed many hawks. They no longer had to worry about their chickens. But they now had a n ew worry. Field mice were eating up a lot of the farmers? grain.

How did this happen?

Hawks eat not only chickens but also field mice. They eat more field mice than chickens. But the farmers didn?t know this. When they killed a lot of hawks, they changed the balance.

When people move into a new place, they often destroy many wild plants. Often these plants are food for the animals. If the animals can?t find enough plants to eat, they will starve or have to leave the place.

In one part of the USA, for example the deer there like to eat a certain kind of wild roses. The mountain lions there eat the deer. The number of deer, mountain lions and wild roses doesn?t change much if people le ave things as they are.

But people killed many mountain lions in order to protect the deer. Soon there were so many deer that th ey ate up all the wild roses. Then the deer began to eat the green leaves of young trees. These trees were im portant to the farmers. So the farmers thought of ways to protect their trees. Now the deer had nothing to eat, and many of them died. This was another lesson from nature.

To keep the balance of nature is important for us to remember.

He didn’t eat them, but made experiments on them. The local people were quite surprised at that. One day he noticed that his chickens became sick when they were fed the food most Javanese ate —refined white rice (精炼米). When he fed them with unrefined rice, also known as brown rice, they recovered. Eijkman realized that he had made an important discovery —that some things in food could prevent disease. These things were named vitamins (维生素). The Javanese were not getting enough vitamins because they had actually removed the part that contains vitamins. Later, other diseases were also found to be caused by the lack of vitamins in a person’s food. A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子)or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people’s rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way. Now the very same thing is true to literature(文学). And the question, "How shall I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有经验的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you will never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning. 1. A friend of the writer’s drew the horses ____. A. very well B. in the way of western rule C. in the way of his own rule D. all of the above 2. The writer was surprised because ____. Then the gardener called his workmen and ordered them to take up the tree and carry it to his brother's farm. They did so, and the next morning the farmer began to wonder where he should plant it. "If I plant it on the hill," he said to himself, "the wind might catch it and shake down the delicious fruit before it is ripe. If I plant it close to the road, passersby will see it and take away the apples--but if I plant it too near the door of my house, my children may pick the fruit." So, after he had thought the matter over, he planted the tree behind his barn (谷仓). Time passed, but the tree had no fruit the first year, nor the second-then the farmer called his brother. When the gardener came, the farmer said angrily, "You have cheated me, and given me a useless tree instead of a fruitful one. This is the third year and still it brings out nothing but leaves!

抓住四个"W"和一个"H",就是边读边用铅笔做些标记,把What (事件),When (时间),Where(地点),Why(原因),How(经过)划出来。

At some point in life, many people develop a mental (精神) problem. While most people get over it, for others it doesn't go away easily. The WHO says that about 20 percent of teenagers worldwide suffer from mental illness. It's thought that the number of teenagers with mental illness around the world will increase by half by 2020. It will become one of the main causes of illness, and even death. In China, the picture isn't bright, either. About one tenth of teenagers under the age of 17 have a mental health challenge. The world is changing fast. Study and relationships have always caused stress, but today the stress is much higher than before, the WHO said. A research centre in Oxford University says that young people today have big stresses at school. For example, they experience bullying (欺凌). In a 2017 report, the centre noted that the Internet was a special source (渠道) of stress. Online, young people often see "messages about perfection" and this causes the young "great uncertainty about their futures", says the centre. Also, according to China Daily, Chinese people don't ask for help with their mental problems. They fear that others will think less of them if they say that they are in mental trouble. Elaine Peng, a US mental health educator, makes a similar point. And in the UK, over three quarters of young people believe their mental problems have a social stigma. It is reported in 2017 that a quarter of young UK people wouldn't ask for help if they developed a mental problem. Young people who don't ask for help for their condition may be creating problems for themselves in the future. Elaine Peng warned that, "If we hide our mental health, it may remain a problem forever." "My message for young people is, if you feel something is wrong within you—ask for help," he told China Daily. (1)Which of the following is NOT the cause of stress according to the passage? A. Heavy schoolwork B. Being bullied at school. C. Some information from the Internet. D. Certainty about the future. (2)Why don't Chinese people ask for help with their mental problems? A. They don't think them serious. B. They can get over them in time. C. They can keep their mental health secret. D. They are afraid of being looked down upon.
