Wild cats are probably the most active animals. They are beautiful but dangerous to people. Here we

will introduce four types of wild cats.

African Golden Cat—This is a small cat compared to the other wild cats. It's double the size of a home

cat and it can be found in the forests of Central and West Africa. African g o lden cats, also known as

Profelis Aurata, catch birds and small monkeys for food. They come in all kinds of colours including black,

brown and grey.

Cheetah—This is the fastest land animal, with speed reaching up to 70 miles per hour. Cheetahs weigh

about between 110 and 140 pounds and they're widely known for the spotted coat. In a zoo a cheetah can

live for nearly 20 years, but it lives for 12 years while in the wild in America.

Lion—The lion is the king of the grassland, known to be the most powerful animal in Asia and Africa.

A male lion is 4 feet tall, 8 feet long and weighs about 450 pounds. A female lion, on the other hand,

weighs about 300 pounds. Male lions have manes(鬃毛) that often grow fuller and darker as they grow

older.

Wildcat—The wildcats live in parts of Arabia, Asia and Europe. Wildcats also look like home cats and

it's actually difficult to tell the difference between them. They mainly prey on small birds, which are their

main food.

There are also many other types of wild cats. These are just the most common. We will fill out the rest

in the list below in the future.

I’ve always seen myself copying every small thing that he does. I play the video games that he plays, I

copy his hairstyle, and I eat the type of food that he eats.

My brother is like a superhero in my eyes. He was a straight A student at high school as well as the

he expectations that were set by my

captain of the school soccer team. It’s been difficult trying to live up to t

brother, but whether consciously (有意识地) or not, I’ll always try to be like him. He motivates (

Younger brothers can influence the behavior of elder siblings (brothers and sisters) just as much as an

elder brother can influence a younger sibling. I had a conversation with my brother about his experience

growing up with me. He joked with me that it felt like the world punished him with having to deal with me.

Yet he expressed that he was grateful to me, because he understood I would take inspiration from him so he

chose to be his best self. My brother and I have inspired each other to do the best we can.

A researcher Birg Rabe has found a correlation (相关性) between a sibling

marks rose by 4%. The effect was

undoubtedly benefits children’s school achievement.

Not only can siblings influence each other’s study, but they can positively benefit each other behavior as well. A study done by researchers in the Brigham Young University shows that children with

sound or pleasant sibling relationships have learned important social skills, such as helping and being able

to share with others. They’ve also learned to deal with arguments and how to solve them. I bet anyone who has a sibling knows the struggle of having to argue for days with their sibling, but I also bet, that they learn

important lessons from every one of their arguments.

Even though you may hear many bad things about having a sibling, it actually has some unexpected

benefits. Learn to enjoy all the benefits a sibling brings you, and be the best sibling you can.

()44. The writer always copies his elder brother because ______.

A. he looks up to his brother

B. he wants to influence his brother

C. his brother is strict with him

D. his brother plays video games well

()45. Birg Rabe finds having elder siblings as role models helps younger ones ______.

A. make progress in their school achievement

B. become more successful when they grow up

C. get better marks than their brothers and sisters

D. learn more important social skills than their friends

()46. The word “sound” in Paragraph 5 probably means “______”.

A. special

B. lasting

C. serious

D. healthy

()47. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. The New Hope that Siblings Give

B. The Great Benefits that Siblings Bring

C. The Necessary Support that Siblings Offer

D. The Enjoyable Experiences that Siblings Share

What does your face say?

How many different emotions do you think you can communicate to people with your face? Do you

have the same facial expressions as people from different cultures?

New research suggests that there are only four basic facial expressions of emotion. However, how

these expressions are understood might depend on where you are from. Research by scientists from the

University of Glasgow has challenged the traditional view of how the face expresses emotions. Until now,

it was widely believed that six basic emotions — happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise and disgust (厌恶), were expressed and recognized across different cultures. However, the University of Glasgow’s work

now suggests that the human face only has four basic expressions of emotion. This is because some pairs of

emotions are impossible to distinguish, especially when they are first expressing on the face. Fear and

surprise, for example, both share wide-open eyes. The facial expressions for anger and disgust also look the

same.

So if our faces are only able to express four basic emotions, how do we communicate more complex

(复杂的) feelings? The study found that the way expressions are ex plained is different in different cultures.

Lead researcher Dr Rachael Jack was studying this because “facial expressions were considered to be

characteristics across cultures, the six basic facial expressions of emotion are not recognized by everyone.

early stages of signaling emotion, fear and surprise, and anger and disgust, were often confused. Jack

explains that these facial expressions have developed both from biology and social evolution (进化).

What interests people about the cross-cultural aspect of the research? “This work leads to

understanding which emotions we share, realizing our differences and calling attention to our multicultural

experiences.” This

research could advise new ways of social communication that improve cross-cultural interactions.

()48. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?

A. To show interest in different cultures.

B. To express the worries about emotions.

C. To lead in the topic of facial expressions.

D. To give an example of facial expressions.

()49. The word “distinguish” in Paragraph 3 probably means

______.

A. express

B. explain

C. differentiate

D. develop

A. facial expressions are easy to understand in Japan

B. the way expressions are understood is different in China

C. new ways of social communication can improve movements

D. it’s difficult to understand all the facial expressions of emotion

()51. What can we learn from the passage?

A. We can express our emotions in four different ways.

B. Facial expressions of emotion can be discovered easily.

C. Facial expressions of emotion are from different countries.

your phon e without getting discouraging looks from teachers and Do you find that it’s hard to look at

parents? What if using social media was an assignment(作业)?

In America, the push for more technological classrooms comes from things like smart boards and online textbooks. Some feel that interaction between students and teachers over social media is a bad thing,

but others see the benefits. Barrington history teacher Robert Seidel uses the social networking website Twitter to interact with his class. He said technology is a valuable tool in his classroom.

“What matters most is how the teacher is using technology, and I have found that technology can help

me increase the number of students who actively participate in my course,” said Seidel.

Humanities and media teacher Scott Glass from Glenbrook South High School in Illinois believes that

social media like Twitter can connect students to the professional world and give them a chance to get their

names out there as soon as they can.

“I think students are sometimes surprised by how easy it is to connect with professionals,

“A simple Google search for any profession will turn up many individuals and o rganizations who are active on platforms like Twitter.”

However, there are problems with putting class work on social platforms (平台). Many teachers, including Seidel, believe that social media and technology in general can easily distract(使分心) students. However, they hope they can find a way to use it properly.

“For teachers and students, technology has become both a powerful tool f or learning and a potential distraction in the classroom,”

Seidel said. “Not o nly can it improve collaboration, communication and creation in endless ways, but it can also serve as a n infinite(极大的)distraction. Properly using technology in the classroom requires additional management from the teacher as well as a great deal of self-discipline (自律) from the students.”

Glass believes it’s very important for schools to teach students how to use social media.

I think part of my job is to help students understand how best to make use of it as thoughtful learners and creators,” said Glass.

()52. By using social media, ______.

A. it will be easier for teachers to observe students’ performance

B. students will become more actively involved in courses

C. students will become independent learners

D. fewer students will attend the class

()53. According to the passage, Glass probably believes that social media ______.

A. is a good platform for students to share their class work

B. can help students to contact professionals more easily

C. offers students the latest knowledge in real world

D. makes it much easier for students to get jobs

()54. Which of the following is TRUE accordin g to the passage?

A. Social media should not be used in the classroom as it distracts students.

B. Students will become less creative if they always use technology for study.

C. Humanities teachers can make fuller use of social media than science teachers.

D. Both teachers and students need to work hard in order to use social media properly.

()55. What is probably the best title for this passage?

A. Social media is popular

B. Classes use social media

C. Technology distracts students

D. Technology is important
