Alison Sweeney, the boss of the popular television weight-loss reality show “The Bigges t Loser”, is using her experience in humans to focus on the problem in dogs with a new diet plan for canines(犬).
And judging from a recent study, which showed 35 million canines in the US are overweight, there should be no lack of canine clients.
Sweeney decided to take on the problem in dogs when her vet told her that her Boston Terrier needed to slim down.
“I realized that I had totally not been paying attention to my dog’s health,” she explained in an interview.
Sweeney is not alone. More than half of the dogs in the US are overweight, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, which was founded to combat the problem.
“It’s enormously serious. The percentage of obese pets isn’t known precisely, but it is surely very high and for the same reasons as obesity in humans: they eat more food that they can work off,” said Professor Marion Nestle, of New York University, and the co-author of a book on pet nutrition.
“Obesity in pets causes the same problems as it does in humans. It increases the risk of heart disease, some cancers, TypeⅡdiabetes (糖尿病) and joint problems.”
Sweeney said one of the primary reasons for overweight canines is that people feed their dogs leftovers, which is particularly fattening (养肥的).
“Feeding a dog an ounce-sized (28.3 grams) piece of cheese, it’s like me ea ting one and a half hamburgers,” she explained. “That’s a lot.”
Five extra pounds on a medium-sized dog is the equivalent(相等物) of nearly 20 pounds on an average-sized woman, according to Hill’s Pet Nutrition, which produces the Science Diet Weight Loss System that combines pre-portioned meals with biscuits.

People have been burying the dead at Salem’s Hope Cemetery since 1833. The place is filled with old gravestones and gothic mausoleums (哥特式陵墓), the spirits of the dead hanging over the land like an early morning fog.

Happiness is U-shaped, for we are happier at the start and end of our lives but hit a slump (暴跌) when we are middle-aged, British and US researchers say.
Economists from the University of Warwick, central England, and from Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, looked at data on the mental health of two million people from 80 countries.
In Britain, the probability of depression for men and women peaks at around 44 years of age, Warwick University said in a press release.
In the United States, though, there was a big difference between men and women. Among women, unhappiness peaked at around the age of 40, whereas among men, it was about 50.
But the U-shape of happiness is constant around the world, and mid-life depression takes place regardless of marital (婚姻的) status, changes in job or income.
The study appears in Social Science & Medicine, published by the Dutch publishing house Elsevier.
“It happens to men and women, to single and married people, to rich and poor and to those with and without children.” said co-author Andrew Oswald.
One possibility may be that people realize they won’t achieve m any of their aspirations at middle age, the researchers said.
Another reason could be that after seeing their fellow middle-aged peers begin to die, people begin to value their own remaining years and embrace life once more.
But the good news is that if people make it to aged 70 and are still physically fit, they are on average as happy and mentally healthy as a 20-year old.
“For the average persons in the modern world, the dip in mental health and happiness comes on slowly, not suddenly in a single year,” Oswald said. “Only in their fifties do people get out of this low period.”
