Number sense is not the ability to count. It is the ability to recognize a 1 in number. Human beings are born with this ability. 2 ,experiments show that many animals are, too. For example, many birds have good number sense. If a nest has four eggs and you remove one, the bird will not 3 .However, if you remove two, the bird 4 leaves. This means that the bird knows the 5 between two and three.

Another interesting experiment showed a bird's 6 number sense. A man was trying to take a photo of a crow (乌鸦) that had a nest in a tower, but the crow always left when she saw him coming. The bird did not 7 until the man left the tower. The man had an 8 . He took another man with him to the tower. One man left and the other stayed, but they did not 9 the bird. The crow stayed away until the second man left, too. The experiment was 10 with three men and then with four men. But the crow did not return to the nest until all the men were 11 .It was not until five men went into the tower and only four left that they were 12 able to fool the crow.

How good is a human's number sense? It's not very good. For example, babies about fourteen months old almost always notice if something is taken away from a 13 group. But when the number goes beyond three or four, the children are 14 fooled.

It seems that number sense is something we have in common with many animals in this world, and that our human 15 is not much better than a crow's.

13. A. single B. small C. local D. new

14. A. seldom B. temporarily C. merely D. often

15. A. sight B. nature C. ability D. Belief

4. A 把这只鸟“通常”会离开,因为这个具体的例子是用来说明“many birds have good number sense”这个主题的。“真诚地”“无意地”“故意地”不合语境。

5. C这个例子谈到,四个中移走一个余下三个,这只鸟会注意不到;若移走两个,余下两个了,这只鸟就会离开这里了。这说明这只鸟知道余下两个与余下三个的“差别”。其余选项“距离”“范围”“间隔”与语境不符。

6. A 与上文中good number sense(良好的数字感)中的good相对应,也与第2题的答案surprising相对,故选“amazing

13. B 由下文But when the number goes beyond three or four可知,是指三四个以内的这样一“小”组东西。

One day, Nick invited his friends to supper. He was cooking some delicious food in the kitchen .Suddenly, he 16 (find)that he had run out of salt. So Nick called to his son, ”Go to the village and buy some salt, but pay a fair price for it: neither too much 17 too little.”

His son looked surprised.” I can understand why I shouldn?t pay too much, Father, but if I can pay less, 18 not save a bit of money?”

“That would be a very 19 (reason)thing to do in a big city, but it could destroy a small village like outs,” Nick said.

Nick?s guests,20 had heard their conversation, asked why they should not buy sale more cheaply if they could. Nick replied,” The only reason a man would sell sale 21 a lower price would be because he was desperate for money. And anyone who took advantage of that situation would be showing a lack of respect 22 the sweat and struggle of the man who worked very hard to produce it.”

“But such a small thing couldn?t23 (possible) destroy a village.”

“In the beginning, there was only 24 very small amount of unfairness in the world, but everyone added a little ,always 25 (think) that it was only small and not very important ,and look where we have ended up today.”

18. why 因why not do sth (何不做某事)?

22. for 固定搭配show respect for表示“尊重”。 24. a 因a small amount of(少量的)是固定搭配。

A

Imagination and fantasy can play an important role in achieving the things we fear. Children know this very well. Fred Epstein , in his book If I Make It to Five, tells a story he heard from one of friends about Tom, a four-year-old boy with a cancer in his back bone. He came through several operations and a lot of pain by mastering his imagination.

Tom loved to pretend, and he particularly loved to play superheroes, Dr Epstein explained that it was actually a brilliant way for his young mind to handle the terrifying and painful life he led.

The day before his third trip to the operating room, Tom was terribly afraid.” Maybe I could go as Superman,” he whispered to his mom. Hearing this, the mother hesitated for a while. She had avoided buying the expensive costume(戏装),finally she agreed.

The next day Tom appeared as the powerful Superman, showing off through the hospital halls and coolly waving his hand to the people greeting him along the way. And Tom, with the strength of his fantasy, successfully made it through the operation.

The power of imagination need not be reserved for children only. we all have the power to use our fantasies to attempt things we never thought possible to go through those things that seem impossible, and to achieve what we never believed we could, Just as Dr. Epstein puts it ,”If you can dream it, you can do it”

It doesn…t mean that you should dress as a superhero for you next job interview. But, next time you are texted in a way that seems impossible, imagine what it would take to overcome it .Become the person you need to become to win over your challenge and do it in your mind first. So, let your imagination run wild, and dare to dream.

26. What do we know about Tom?

A. He was seriously ill

B. He was a dishonest boy.

C. He was crazy about magic

D. He was Dr. Epstein?s patient

27. What can be inferred about Tom?s mother?

A. She was a rich lady

B. She refused Tom?s request

C. She wanted Tom to be a superhero

D. She wanted to get Tom through the pain

28. When Tom went for the third operation, he .

A. pretended to be painful

B. acted like a superhero

C. appeared in poor spirits

D. argued with his mother

29. In the last paragraph, you are advised .

A. to go through some difficult tests

B. to wake up from your wild dreams

C. to become a powerful person in your mind

D. to wear expensive clothes for job interviews

30. What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To tell us an interesting story.

B. To help us make right decisions.

C. To advise us to care about children.

D. To encourage us to use our imagination.

26. A 细节题。 He came through several operations and a lot of

选项B(他是一个不诚实的孩子)和选项C(他对魔术着了迷)都是

Fred Epstein, in his book If I Make It to Five, tells a story he heard from one of his friends about Tom可知,有关Tom的事情是Dr.

Hearing this, the mother hesitated for a while. She had avoided buying the expensive costume(戏装), finally she agreed. 由had avoided buying the expensive costume可排除选项A;由finally she agreed可排除选项B;她同意为他购买昂贵的戏装其目的不是希望他真正成为超人,故排除选项C。

Tom appeared as the powerful Superman, showing off through the hospital halls and coolly waving his h and to the people greeting him along the way可知,他的行为就像是一个超人。

Become the person you need to become to win over your challenge and do it in your mind first可知,选项C(要成为一个内心强大的人)正确。

Imagination and fantasy can play an important role in achieving the things we fear. So, let your imagination run wild, and dare to dream可知,作者写这篇文章的目的是鼓励我们运用我们的想象力。

B

Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I?m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don?t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that?s just the reality of how life is.

However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in addition to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it?ll require even more time, time that most people won?t put in.

This is a big reason why many successfu l people advise you to do something you love. If you don?t enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.

When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It?s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there?s a huge chance tha t you?re wrong anyway.

Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you?re not willing to put in the time and work,

don?t expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won?t guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.

31. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ________.

A. the reasons for success

B. the meaning of success

C. the standards of success

D. the importance of success

32. In Paragraph 2, the underlined word that refers to ______.

A. being good at something

B. setting a practical goal

C. putting in more time

D. succeeding in life

33. Successful people suggest doing what one loves because ______.

A. work makes one feel pain

B. one tends to enjoy his work

C. one gives up his work easily

D. it takes a lot of time to succeed

34. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?

A. Successful people like to show their great skills.

B. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.

C. People need to achieve success at the cost of life.

D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.

35. What is the main theme of the passage?

A. Having a goal is vital to success.

B. Being good is different from being great.

C. One cannot succeed without time and practice.

D. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success.

代词是意义衔接的手段之一,此处的代词that替代前句中的set a goal and then gradually make it more practical,故选B。

This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love.但其中的this就是指代上文的内容,即第二段的第后两句话的内容one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in,这两句就告诉我们,要成功需要花费大量的时间。

由第一句they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost可推知。

由第二段开头的However可知,本文的中心论题不是第一段而在第二段to succeed in life, one first needs to… needs to…,再结合最后一段第一句if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time,可知本文的主题思想是不花时间和实践是不可能取得成功的。

C

One day, when I was working as a psychologist in England,an adolescent boy showed up in my office. It was David. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly. His head teacher had referred him to me. "This boy has lost his family," he wrote. "He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and I'm very wo rried about him. Can you help?”

I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problems psychology doesn?t have the answer to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically

The first two times we met, David didn't say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the children's drawings on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon一in complete silence and without looking at me. It's not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure David won once or twice.

Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my company. But why did he never look at me?

"Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with," I thought. "Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering.” Some months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly.

"Ifs your turn," he said.

After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life.

Maybe I gave David something. But I also learned that one----without any words----can reach out to another person. All it takes is a hug, a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch, and an ear that listens.

36. When he first met the author, David .

A. felt a little excited

B. walked energetically

C. looked a little nervous

D. showed up with his teacher

37. As a psychologist, the author .

A. was ready to listen to David

B. was skeptical about psychology

C. was able to describe David's problem

D. was sure of handling David's problem 38.David enjoyed being with the author because he________.

A. wanted to ask the author for advice

B. need to share sorrow with the author

C. liked the children?s drawings in the office

D. bear the author many times in the chess game 39.What can be inferred about David?

A.He recovered after months of treatment. B.He liked biking before he lost his family.

C.He went into university soon after starting to talk. D.He got friends in school before he met the author.

40.What made David change?

A. His teacher?s help.

B. The author?s friendship.

C. His exchange of letters with the author.

D. he author?s silent communicatio n with him.

He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly(他烦躁地走来走去,面色苍白,双手在微微地颤抖)可推断,他进来时有点紧张,故选C,在这种情况下他不可能是“精神抖擞地走进来”,文中也没有相应的信息说明这一点,可排除选项B;由His head teacher had referred him to me中的时态可知,老师将David的情况告诉作者是在David进来之前,且由hewrote可知,是老师写的字条而不是亲自来了,故排除选项D。

How could I help him? There are problems Psychology doesn’t have the answer to, and which no words can describe Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically可知,选A,作者打算倾听David。

Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with. Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering可知,选B。

He wrote to me a few times … about his plan to get into university可以推断,不久之后他上大学了,故选C。

After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon一incomplete silence and without looking at me和最后一段第二句But I also learned that one一without any words一can reach out to another person可知,选D,是作者同David的无声交流改变了David。

While Jennifer was at house taking an online exam for her business law class, a monitor(监控器)a few hundred miles away was watching her every move.

Using a web camera equipped in Jen nifer?s Los Angeles apartment, the monitor in Phoenix tracked how frequently her eyes moved from the computer screen and listened for the secret sounds of a possible helper in the room. Her Internet access was locked — remotely — to prevent Internet searches, and her typing style was analyzed to make sure she was who she said she was: Did she enter her student number at the same speed as she had in the past? Or was she slowing down?

In the battle against cheating, this is the cutting edge and a key to encourage honesty in the booming field of online education. The technology gives trust to the entire system, to the institution and to online education in general. Only with solid measures against cheating, experts say, can Internet universities show that their exams and diplomas are valid —that students haven?t just searched the Internet to get the right answers.

Although online classes have existed for more than a decade ,the concern over cheating has become sharper in the last year with the growth of "open online courses." Private colleges, public universities and corporations are jumping into the online education field . spending millions of dollars to attract potential students, while also taking steps to help guarantee honesty at a distance.

Aside from the web cameras, a number of other high-tech methods are becoming increasingly popular Among them are programs that check students? identities using personal information, such as the telephone number they once used.

Other programs can produce unique exam by drawing on a large list of questions and can recognize possible cheaters by analyzing whether difficult test question are answered at the same speed as easy ones ,As in many university classes ,term papers are scanned against some large Internet data banks for cheating.

41. Why was Jennifer watched in an online exam?

A. To correct her typing mistakes.

B. To find her secrets in the room.

C. To prevent her from slowing down.

D. To keep her from dishonest behaviors.

42. The underlined expression cutting edge in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ______.

A. advanced technique

B. sharpening tool

C. effective rule

D. dividing line

43. For internet universities, exams and diplomas will be valid if _____.

A. they can attract potential students

B. they can defeat academic cheating

C. they offer students online help

D. they offer many online courses

44. Some programs can find out possible cheaters by _____.

A. checking the question answering speed

B. producing a large number of question

C. scanning the Internet test question

D. giving difficult test question

45. Which of the following is the best title of this passage?

A. The Advantages of Online Exams

B. The High-tech Methods in Online Courses

C. The Fight against Cheating in Online Education

D. The War against the Booming of Online Education

In the battle against cheating可知,前面两段对Jennifer在家考试中受监控器的监控的具体描述是为了防止他作弊。

Only with solid measures against cheating, experts say, can Internet universities show that their exams an d diplomas are valid

recognize possible cheaters by analyzing whether difficult test questions are answered at the same speed as easy ones可知,是通过分析答题的速度来判断是否作弊,故选A。

To many people even the word …work? sounds unple asant, not necessarily because they are lazy. The same man, who dislikes his job in the factory or even in the office, may work hard at the weekend, painting the house or digging the garden.

What is the reason, then? In most cases, it is because these people simply do not enjoy the job they are doing. It does not give them any real satisfaction. It may be quite easy, like making up wooden boxes, but it is very boring. Very often they are doing a job which is just a small part of a much larger one, such as attaching a door handle to a car. But the part they play in actually making the car is so small that they can never say: I have made something!

Yet in modern society somebody has to do ordinary jobs such as cleaning streets because this is the way society is organized. No matter how ordinary a job is, it plays a part in society and therefore deserves our due respect. Society cannot function a single day without the …?dull and boring? jobs.

In the passage , the author mainly stressed the importance of small and ordinary work , such as cleanin g the street because of their essentiality for the organization of the society ,and thinks those doing such jo bs should be respected greatly.

There is no doubt that what a cleaner does is more harder compared with any other jobs in the society. On one hand , they must get up in the early morning every day to clean the street while we are sill in the

sweet sleeping dreams . On the other hand, they also suffer from less respect and lower pay , working all day on the street no matter it is sun shines strongly or snow, wind heavily.

Nobody could imagine what an bad environment we would live in if there were no cleaners in the city. Wherever we go , there is rubbish. Maybe we would soon be drowned in the mountain of rubbish. Even worse, if there wee no change about that, diseases would spread at a very quick speed. Is there anything t hat can be worse than this !

From the above , I can draw the conclusion safely that even the smallest and the most ordinary job, such as cleaning the street is also the necessary part to keep the society going smoothly.

It is reported that thirty volunteers who are at least 18 years old will be chosen from the whole globe and sent to the Mars by the year of 2015. The volunteers must make a full preparation that there is almost no chance to return to the earth once they are immigrated to the Mars. What?s more, it is greatly important for them to try to keep a good relationship with other members. Experts strongly warned that the living conditions on the Mars are very hard, for not only the extremely cold climate would they meet with, but also loneliness and fear. On the contrary, the volunteers insist that they have got tired of the life on the earth, so greatly being eager to experience the unknown, mysterious life on the Mars; meanwhile, if they would be succeeded, they would get the honor to be heroes of human beings.

In the passage, the author mainly stressed the importance of small and ordinary work, such as cleaning the street because of their essentiality for the organization of the society, and thinks those doing such jobs should be respected greatly.

There is no doubt that what a cleaner does is much harder compared with any other jobs in the society. On one hand, they must get up in the early morning every day to clean the street while we are sill in the sweet sleeping dreams. On the other hand, they also suffer from less respect and lower pay, working all day on the street no matter it is sun shines strongly or snow, wind heavily.

Nobody could imagine what an bad environment we would live in if there were no cleaners in the city. Wherever we go , there is rubbish. Maybe we would soon be drowned in the mountain of rubbish. Even worse, if there wee no change about that, diseases would spread at a very quick speed. Is there anything that can be worse than this !

From the above , I can draw the conclusion safely that even the smallest and the most ordinary job, such as cleaning the street is also the necessary part to keep the society going smoothly. Consequently, those who do those most insignificant jobs should get respect as much as those being engineers or teachers.

Kids' imaginations are in overdrive when it comes to composing Christmas lists - as they ask for a live walrus(海象), the power of invisibility(隐身) and Taylor Swift. Christmas is less than two months away, and little ones are already planning their letters to Santa. But one survey has revealed the weirdest items to turn up on Christmas lists, and they include mythical monsters and mega-selling pop stars. Conducted by GAME, the study also reveals a significant break from festive tradition when it comes to writing wish lists. One in three, 29%, children now use technology such as iPads or mobile phones instead of the traditional pen and paper, while a further one in five (19%) will rely on parents to take note of all the things they point at during TV adverts and during trips to the shops. With more than three million lists likely to be drafted, parents are prepared for a flurry of requests including many that even Santa would struggle to achieve. As part of the study, parents were asked to reveal some of the weird and wonderful items that made it onto their child's Christmas lists. Fred Prego, marketing director at GAME, says: "Choosing what to get your kids at Christmas can be a bit of a minefield(雷区).” As the research shows, most kids will be making note of the things that they want this half term and a lot of lists are going to be written." 21. The underlined word “overdrive” in paragraph one means _______. A. running with a high speed B. slowing down sometimes C. driving forth and backwards D. getting stuck somewhere 【答案】:A 【解析】:根据背景可知,孩子们在选择圣诞礼物时,要求颇多,在脑风暴什么礼物时,想象力也十分充沛。overdrive v.& n.

Having familiarized myself with how the game works,I set out in search of my first cache. My trip took me through a series of lively hutong (胡同),past a number of small temples, and right into the courtyard of a quiet youth hotel.I spent several minutes looking around, but couldn’t find anything.Just before I was about to give up,I spotted a colorful object in the crack of a wall.Could it be the hidden cache? At that moment a group of backpackers arrived.According to the game’s rules, people who are not in the game must not be allowed to find out about secret caches. So I pretended to make a phone call while waiting for them to leave. When the coast was clear,I grabbed the object. It was the cache! I opened it and pulled out a crumpled (皱的) sheet of paper with several names and celebratory messages written on it.I added my o wn and replaced the cache in its hiding place, ready for the next geocacher to find. It may seem like a simple game, but the idea that there are caches hidden all around us is exciting.Once you’re hooked,it’s easy to set yourself the goal of finding every single cache in a neighborhood or even an entire city. The real treasure, however,is not the cache itself, but the places it takes you to. Hunting for further caches has since introduced me to places which I didn’t even know existed. Some are peaceful parks, while others are forgotten historical sites.A few caches have even been in places I passed regularly without giving them any thought. Now,I feel a much closer connection. 21.What was the author’s initial attitude to geocaching?( ) A.He thought it interesting.
